Developing Tribal Transportation Safety Plans

Webinar Announcement

August 14, 2013 at 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm CST

Instructor:  Adam Larsen, FHWA

Webinar Description:

Tribal Transportation Safety Plans are a critical first step for developing a strategic approach to transportation safety risks. This training will be an overview of a recommended process for developing TTSP.

MAP-21 sets aside 2% of the Tribal Transportation Program (TTP) as TTP Safety Funds (TTPSF) to be made available to tribes on a competitive basis.  The funds will be distributed to tribes to develop strategic plans and implement multi-disciplinary strategies that are most likely to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury crashes that are occurring in Indian Country.    The top priority during the first cycle of funding will be funding the development of Tribal Transportation Safety Plans. The training will also cover key elements for Tribes to consider when applying for TTPSF dollars to develop a Tribal Transportation Safety Plan.

A Tribal Transportation Safety Plan:

  • is a living document
  • is data driven
  • identifies transportation safety issues
  • prioritizes strategies to address the top issues
  • is coordinated with the State Strategic Highway Safety Plan and any local government safety plans
  • and, promotes a comprehensive, strategic approach to addressing safety needs with input from a variety of stakeholders

Registration for this event is required.  This webinar is limited to 99 connections.

Every Day Counts
Mark your calendar for the next EDC Exchange
Locally Administered Federal-Aid Projects: What's in it for you?
September 24, 1:00 pm Central Time

Are your federally funded local projects challenging to complete on time and within budget?  Are the Federal-aid Program requirements daunting? If the answer to these questions is "yes," then this Every Day Counts (EDC) initiative may be right for you!  Join the EDC Exchange on September 24 from 1:00-3:30 Central at a location near you.

The second round of EDC introduced a three-pronged strategy to aid local public agencies (LPAs) through the complexities of delivering and administering Federal-aid projects.

The strategy focuses on:  Stakeholder Partnering (ensuring effective communication), Certification Programs (ensuring technical capabilities to manage projects) and Consultant Services Flexibilities (improving the quality and performance of contracted services.  The session will highlight examples that demonstrate the successful use of these LPA initiatives.

More specifics coming soon!

Jason Vogel
Erosion Control class coming September 10
Dr. Jason Vogel, Stormwater Specialist

This comprehensive course set for Tuesday, September 10, covers stormwater, sediment and erosion control from fundamental principles to practical design applications. The course includes use of the newest techniques and methodologies. Basic principles of environmental hydrology and sedimentology are presented along with design procedures and consideration for installation and maintenance. Attention is given to explaining why some stormwater designs work and why others do not.

Construction and other large land disturbing activities can modify the hydrologic balance and damage or degrade water resources. As of March 13, 2003, the U.S. EPA, through its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) stormwater regulations, requires effective stormwater and erosion control plans for all construction sites of one acre or more. Many local and state governments require developments to control stormwater runoff and sediment production. Although a variety of computer-based techniques are available to assist the designer, a basic understanding of hydrology, erosion, and sedimentation processes is needed to assure the available design software is used properly.

Voice activated mike
Report:  Voice-to-text technology offers no safety benefit

Ever since automakers began putting voice-activated communications in vehicles, the devices have been marketed as safe alternatives to using handheld cell phones while driving. New research released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety indicates there are distraction risks.

The devices do not offer a safety benefit because as mental workload and distractions increase, reaction times slow, brain function is compromised, and drivers can scan the road less and miss more visual cues. Find out more about cognitive distraction and Understanding the distracted brain.
