The Scotties & Westies of the New York Tartan Day Parade will look smarter than ever, thanks to Barbour.

British heritage and lifestyle clothing brand, Barbour, is celebrating its Scottish roots by sponsoring the Scottie and Westie Tartan Dog Pack in this year's

New York Tartan Day Parade on Saturday, April 11 2015.

With over one hundred Scottish and West Highland White Terriers strutting up the Avenue, the Tartan Dog Pack has long been one of the most popular units in the parade.

This year, a number of the wee dogs will be selected to selected to wear Barbour tartan coats, making a colourful spectacle as they walk up Sixth Avenue with their owners.

On the day of the Parade, Barbour will also judge the dogs, choosing the Best Doga in Parade overall, Best Male and Best Female, with prizes for both dogs and their masters.

Barbour was founded in 1894 by John Barbour, a Scotsman from Galloway in the Borders of Scotland.

John Barbour came to South Shields in the North East of England to set up the first Barbour store but the company has never forgotten its Scottish roots, and celebrates them through its renowed and exclusive tartans.

Based on the Ayrshire District Tartan, the Barbour tartans today are used in jacket linings, knitwear, shirts, polo shirts, accessories and dog coats, making Barbour products instantly recognisable.

The colours in the tartans reflect the colour image of the iconic Barbour wax jackets with the main base colours of navy, olive and sandstone alongside gold/white/red overcheck lines - colours which are timeless and versatile.

Tom Hooven, General Manager, Barbour Inc said

"Each season we design new lifestyle collections for men, women and children using our exclusive tartans.  We also design a selection of dog coats in tartan quilts or wax cotton with tartan linings and this Fall we will be extending this to include dog beds, collars and leashes.  The Tartan Day Parade gives us a great opportunity to creatively showcase our association with tartan and we look forward to taking part in the Parade with the Scotties and Westies.   Barbour's heritage is in the British countryside and throughout our history, we have had a long association with dogs both in providing clothing for their owners and providing dog coats and accessories for all shapes and sizes for our faithful friends."

Alan L. Bain, President of the National Tartan Day New York Committee, commented

"On behalf of the New York Tartan Day Committee, we are delighted to welcome Barbour to the New York Tartan Day Parade.

"Barbour's presence is most fitting. Just as Barbour celebrates its Scottish roots through its renowned and exclusive Tartans so we, American Scots, celebrate our ties to Scotland through the Parade that was established in recognition of Tartan Day.

"AND this year Scotties and Westies in New York are going to look the best turned out dogs in their Barbour coats.  Welcome to the Parade Barbour."

THE 17th ANNUAL NEW YORK TARTAN DAY PARADE: will take place on Saturday April 11, stepping off at 2pm from 44th and Sixth Avenue.

In 1998 the U.S. Senate declared April 6 to be National Tartan Day to recognize the contributions made by Scottish-Americans to the United States. In 1999, two pipe bands and a small but enthusiastic group of Scottish Americans marched from the British Consulate to the UN-our first Parade! Since then, it has grown to include hundreds of pipers, thousands of marchers and many more thousands cheering from the sidelines.  Website for Parade details: http://nyctartanweek.org/tartan-day/
