April, 2013 - New York
What a great Scotland/Tartan Week this has been! The American-Scottish Foundation would like to thank everyone who took part for everything they did to help make it so successful. From the parade to events throughout the city, it was an outstanding celebration of Scottish heritage, culture and pride. Once again, Scotland really took New York by storm!
April 6th found Tartan Day events taking place throughout the United States, Canada, and around the world - with New York highlighting the Tartan Day weekend with the 15th Annual New York City Tartan Day Parade marching up Sixth Avenue.
A full calendar of events over a two week time-frame, truly created a dynamic festival of Scottish tradition and culture here in the Big Apple - incorporating music, film, plays, business forums and exhibitions, there were events for all.
But it is not over yet... there are still plays and exhibits taking place. Events both here, and in Scotland are planned throughout 2013, Scotland's celebration of the Year of Natural Scotland and the run up to Homecoming 2014. The ASF has many plans underway in addition to our ongoing platform of work. Best wishes, Camilla

60th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ROYAL YACHT BRITANNIA LAUNCH
|
Queen Elizabeth II launched the Royal Yacht Britannia at Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland on April 16th 1953.
|
"Thousands of wellwishers greeted the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh when they arrived at Clydeside to launch the new royal yacht, Britannia.
The Queen, who is to be crowned in June, named the ship at a ceremony at the Clydebank yard of John Brown and Co. In spite of heavy rain, more than 30,000 people came to hear Her Majesty say: "I name this ship Britannia." The rest of her speech was drowned out by deafening cheers from the 30,000-strong crowd, mostly employees of the shipbuilders and their families. They sang Rule Britannia accompanied by a band." BBC NEWS The Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned after over 40 years service, and having sailed over 1,000,000 miles around the world. She is now permanently moored as an exhibition ship at Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. The Royal Yacht Britannia hosted a variety of celebratory events, in honor of the 60th Anniversary.
