ASF Hosts its 18th Annual Burns Night Celebration
& receives the World Peace Tartan

Heather L. Bain - Chairman ASF, Alan L. Bain - President Emeritus ASF & Phamie Gow - World Peace Tartan Ambassador
Our Burns Night on February 18th in NYC, was a great success!

Thank you to our talented musicians and orators, to our sponsors, and everyone who attended! To view some of the images from the event please click here.

ASF was delighted to be presented, on Friday, January 18th, at its Burns Night, with the World Peace Tartan by their Ambassador Phamie Gow.

The World Peace Tartan was created to promote a global message of peace. The striking light blue in the design is representative of the presence, hope and potential of the United Nations. Scotland is represented at the heart of this enterprise through the purple and green of the Scottish thistle. The red and black in the design represent and remind us of the realities of war and violence and the great need for a new living culture of nonviolence with the white running through the pattern proving a counterbalance in being symbolic of peace and light.

Spotlight: Crofting in the Scottish Highlands and Islands

Crofting evolved from the drastic social changes inflicted on the Scottish Highland and Island population in the 19th century when the glens and best ground were 'cleared' for sheep walks and deer forest. Those who could emigrated to America and Canada, and some were forcibly moved to the New World.  Those who remained were displaced to the coastal and island margins and retained by their landlords as labor.

Agriculture is the life blood of crofting and it is this small-scale and extensive agriculture which has delivered some of the most stunning habitats within the U.K. Crofting agriculture, although constrained by peripherality, soil quality and climate difficulties, continues to have an important role in the production of healthy, local food and in maintaining and enhancing the environment.

The Scottish Crofting Federation is the only organization protecting this traditional way of living, and your support is needed.
