Ask Angela Q. Advice Column:

Dear Angela,

My child has recently been in some financial trouble. He would like for me to co-sign on a new car. I am willing, but my husband is against it. I feel like he doesn't care. He says if the note gets behind, he will not help us at all. I am scared that if I don't help my son, he will not be able to get a job and that seems worse to me. Do you have any suggestions?

Signed, Lonely Ally in Louisiana

Dear Lonely,

I feel your compassion and commend you as a caring mom. However, I understand your husband's fears. This must be treated as a business decision. When you sign your name on the dotted line, you are contractually agreeing to the payment. In the last 15 years, I can only remember a couple of times where co-signers did not pay a steep price for their generosity. In most cases, their credit suffered greatly.

With a new car, you must also be prepared to pay more for automobile insurance. Lien holders require comprehensive, collision and liability coverage, while the state's requirements are usually much less. Consider  providing him with a personal loan that allows him to purchase a good used vehicle. You should also consult with your insurance professional prior to buying any vehicle for your state requirements.

If you do co-sign, have your son give you the money for the note and the insurance, and make the payments yourself. Maintain control of your hard-earned credit. You can't help others if you neglect to take care of yourself.

Dear Angela,

I have a son in the 5th grade. We fight every night over his homework. What should take about 45 minutes takes us 2 hours. I am exhausted and the fighting is driving me crazy. Sometimes I complete the homework, just so we can all get some sleep. Please help.

Signed, Fatigued From Fighting

Dear Fatigued,

Arguing and fighting with a fifth-grader is out of the question. You are the parent, but he has found a way to control the situation. You should not succumb to his tactics. Fear is usually the culprit for our need to control a situation. What are you both afraid of? The pain of failure is a great motivator. Just the thought of having to stay in the same grade with younger kids should motivate him to work with you and not against you. Failure is part of learning too. He will learn to earn his grades and accept assistance when offered. Tell him that you refuse to fight. You are a team. Give him the skill to study and complete his task with very little oversight. Make that his goal too. Remind him that if he argues, talks back, fights, etc., that you will not assist and he will be own his own. You must honor your word. He will test you and you must pass the test, even if that means him getting a bad grade. Take into consideration his learning style and get help from the school when needed. Doing his work for him is a disservice to your child. We all learn to walk by falling down and getting up again. Remind him of the pain of failure. Don't be afraid to let him fall, and be there to help him up when he does. Encouragement goes a long way too. Let him know you believe in him. Maybe he is afraid of letting you down. All people fail along the way to success. They learn from their failures and become better for having fallen.

Events / News

On October 27th, I was honored to share a booth at the Louisiana Book Festival with two Louisiana authors: Iris Floyd, who wrote the humorous fiction novel "Six of One", and Alex McConduit, author of an inspiring children's book called "The Little Who Dat Who Didn't". It was an amazing experience. Thank you to everyone who came to support us!

We have a lot of exciting events upcoming as well:

On November 3rd, I will be one of the many authors attending the Holiday Book Bazaar at the Denham Springs-Walker Branch of the Livingston Parish Library. The bazaar runs from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and features fiction and nonfiction authors for both adults and children. Many different genres will be represented. Don't miss this chance to meet some of your favorite local authors. You can also bring your holiday shopping list and buy a book for all of your loved ones. The library will even gift-wrap for free! Please call the Denham Springs-Walker Branch Library at (225) 665-8118 for more details.

I will be attending the November 4th release party for Katie Wainwright's new book "Secuestro". Katie is a local author whose earlier release, "Cuba on My Mind", has won a great deal of praise. Congrats to you, Katie! May God bless all of your hard work.

On November 10th, I will be at Sonlife Christian Store in Denham Springs, LA, for a book signing and sidewalk sale. The store is located at 7755 Magnolia Beach Rd., Ste. Q, in Denham Springs. Please call (225) 978-0232 for more information.

I will be story-telling and signing books with two other Louisiana authors on November 16th at the Hammond Downtown Development District's 8th Annual Starry November Night. This event is scheduled to run from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Louisiana Children's Discovery Center, located at 113 N. Cypress in Hammond. For more information, visit the Louisiana Children's Discovery Center website or call (985) 340-9150.

Ariane O'Pry, who illustrated "Mary's Christmas", is the official artist of the Starry November Night festivities. Ariane will be drawing caricatures, so come out and bring the children for lots of family fun.

On Saturday, November 17th, I will be at the New Orleans Bookfair & Media Expo from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The fair will be held at 725 Magazine St., across from the Farmers Market.

I will be appearing at the Largest Kids Event Ever at the Baton Rouge River Center from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, December 1st.

A release party for "Mary's Christmas" hosted by the Creative Minds Writers Group will be announced soon.

A Special Offer from Angela
Good Mourning Sunshine

Dear Seeker of Truth,

You will be forever grateful this letter has found you. Truth is what you seek, and it can be found everywhere--but first you must acquire understanding.

Consider the words in Proverbs 2:3-5. If you seek understanding as one who searches for hidden treasure, then you will find the knowledge of God.

Just imagine the peace of knowing God and having knowledge of God; having truth that sets us free from worry and stress. That is why we all seek truth. Freedom is what truth produces in all who find it.

No wonder you seek truth at every turn and have dedicated your life to finding it. But are you looking in the right place? Proverbs says that if you seek understanding you will find truth. Are you seeing what caught my eye? Exactly! If you want truth, you must look for understanding.

That is exactly what you will find in "Good Mourning Sunshine". Not only will you find understanding, but the way of understanding. You will never be the same. You eyes will be opened to truth that is already all around you and in you. You may have heard perception is everything. I say, however, that understanding your perception is everything.
