Lessons from Story Ballet Romances

Romance is hard! Balancing classes and rehearsals with dating is a challenge. On the bright side, it could be worse.  Story ballet heroines' love lives are just the Worst!

Here are cautionary take-aways to be gleaned from balletic love tales. If you're steering clear of these "classic" mistakes, congratulations! #winningatValentinesDay

Beware princes making pledges.

These men have serious commitment issues. Also, they can be really bad at telling the difference between magical ladies!

Brooklyn Mack as Prince Siegfried pledges his eternal love to Misty Copeland as Odette.

Angel Corella as Prince Siegfried pledges his love to Nina Ananiashvili as Odile. Come on, Siegfried!

The Royal Danish Ballet's Silja Schandorff consults a flower to ascertain the veracity of Albrecht's (Nehemiah Kish) love. Hmm, questionable method of vetting.

Casting New Perspectives: Dance in Denmark

During the last week of January, art and policy engaged in a particularly salient dance in Denmark. Last week, the Danish Parliament passed a law allowing authorities to seize assets from refugees in an effort to curb rising pressures of migration. Three days later, Corpus, an experimental company within the Danish Royal Ballet, debuted a piece called Uropa, starring six asylum seekers in a deeply moving representation of their experiences. Named after a hybrid of the Danish word for instability (uro), and Europe, the multimedia work explores the diverse stories of the ballet's asylum seeking artists, who come from Syria, Pakistan, Eritrea, Myanmar, and Uganda, and their hopes for the future.

"I dream to have a life again, to experience my humanity," says
music professor Salam Susu. Susu left Homs, Syria last August and received news that she'd been granted asylum in Denmark during a dress rehearsal for Uropa. "It's incredible. I start to experience my skills in the real world among people who really start to know who I am. I'm, like, stepping on stairs to dream."

Love Letters to Dance Teachers

We celebrate all the dance teachers who enrich our lives, lend their expertise, their caring, advice, and hard work to dancers worldwide! For many years, Harlequin Floors has awarded scholarships to dancers.  Each scholarship winner  has expressed their thanks to the dance teachers who have shaped their lives.  Here are just a few of those heartfelt shout outs:

"Working with Katelyn Rademacher is an amazing experience. She always pushes me beyond what I thought I was possible of achieving. She pushes the limits of creative choreography and I am lucky enough to try to dance her vision." - Emily DeNet, Sept. 2015

"There have been many great instructors that I have had throughout my dance training that have helped me grow. Two that I would like to acknowledge are Lily Cabatu Weiss and Dr. Linda James. They have honed in on my potential of being a dancer since my freshman year of high school. I appreciate them so much." - Avery Alexander, Nov. 2015

"Each one of the amazing teachers at Jeanne Lynn Dance Studio has played a part in the dancer I have become today. I am extremely thankful for every one of them.  My first solo teacher, Ms. Sarah Beth, has had a huge impact on my life. She taught me to get out of my "shell" -- to really perform and share my love of dance on stage. She inspires me to be the best person I can be, both inside the studio and out." - Kalysta Gregory, Oct. 2015

"The first teacher that believed in me was Heidi Heath-Fay. She was the one that took me to New York for the first time and showed me that there was a place in the dance world for me as long as I didn't give up. In addition, Jenny Schiff, Pat Connelly, Meghan Law, Hannah Frederick, and Ashle' Dawson have been the most amazing mentors and people in my life." - Courtney Murray, Sept. 2015

"I would like to thank my mom first of all for being there for me, and driving me to all the practices and competitions. She is my #1 fan, and I can always count on her. I don't know where I'd be without her. Secondly, I would like to thank Dana Krueger for choreographing an amazing dance this year! Also, she and I over the years have developed a bond, so if she is struggling with a word or dance move I automatically know what she is talking about! She is an amazing person and I would like to acknowledge her for it." - Logan Howell, July 2015

"The studios and people of B.funk hold some of my fondest memories as a dancer. The best of these memories involve Tim Roberts and Thomas Ford. Tim Roberts changed more than my dancing, he changed my life by always believing in me and teaching me to dance with my heart. Thomas has always challenged and trusted me to take care of his artistic genius."  - Michelle Carter, June 2015

We send our love and appreciation to all dance teachers during this Valentine's Day month and year-round!  To read many more letters of gratitude, check out the  Meet the Winners pages on TheWorldDances.com. And while we're at at, thanks to all dance moms and dads as well.  There would be no dance-dreams-come-true without you!
