ABT to Premiere Ratmansky's New The Sleeping Beauty at Segerstrom Center for the Arts

American Ballet Theatre premieres a new production of The Sleeping Beauty at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County on March 3. The new production has been a labor of love for ABT artist in residence Alexei Ratmansky, who poured himself into the ballet's 19th century roots. "I've learned more about Petipa in these last three months than I learned in my whole life - his phenomenal mastery of the craft, finding the threads he follows from the beginning to the end," says Ratmansky in this New York Times article. While honoring the history of The Sleeping Beauty and remaining true to its classicism and dreamlike, fairy tale opulence, Ratmansky's latest version also features brand new, gorgeous costume and set designs by Tony Award-winning designer Richard Hudson.

The Sleeping Beauty is populated with beloved characters whose impressive ranks provide exciting performance opportunities for principals, soloists, and rising corps members, as well as 60 local ballet students.

The casting schedule and tickets for Sleeping Beauty's Segerstrom run are available here. The next chance to see it will come in May during ABT's New York season. If you can't catch either, @SegerstromArts and@ABTBallet have been doing a great job sharing the run-up to the world premiere on social media and will be fun to follow throughout the performances as well.

NYCDA Foundation Helps
Students Realize Dreams

Last month, the New York City Dance Alliance Foundation  presented a special program at the Joyce Theater in New York. Remarkably poised students had the opportunity share the stage with professionals from exciting drivers of choreographic innovation like Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Keigwin + Company, and Intermezzo Dance Company, as well as with soloists/choreographers Peter Chu and Andy Pellick. The performances were stunning. Andonis Foniadakis' Horizons, performed by Cedar Lake, was especially mesmerizing (you can watch video clips of the piece here), but the greatest emotional impact of the evening by far came from the electric sense of potential the Foundation helps students fulfill.

The NYCDA Foundation offers talented young dancers scholarships to pursue their training and education at the college level. The scholarships, valued from $5,000 to $25,000, are given to dancers to use toward tuition at the college of their choice and represent life-changing opportunities. "Since 2010, more than 200 dancers have received over $12.5 million in college scholarships awarded through NYCDAF," says Founder and Executive Director Joe Lanteri. "Together, we are truly making a difference."
