Bradley Shelver: Dancer, Teacher, Choreographer

Bradley Shelver has danced professionally with a list of companies and choreographers the length of a paragraph, including Elisa Monte Dance, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Ballet Hispanico of New York, Limon Dance Company, William Forsythe, and Lar Lubovitch. He's also the Artistic Director of his own company, Bradley Shelver Contemporary Dance Theater, a prolific choreographer, and a much sought-after teacher.

"Your plié should gather energy for you, not  distribute it." This was the first advice that Bradley Shelver offered in a ballet class he recently taught. Later on in the class, he called on students to express optimism with their movements, affectionately poking fun at the classic tragedies. "My prince stood me up and cheated on me!" he sarcastically bemoaned, improvising a White Swan-esque adagio. "At least in this class, dance like there's hope!" Afterwards, dancers described their connection to the music and their transitions as feeling much freer.

Shelver's blend of humor and philosophy is evident in his choreography as well. (You can watch some of it here.) Shelver is also currently dancing with the Metropolitan Opera, which opens its season this month. His company, Bradley Shelver Contemporary Dance Theater, will be performing in NY this fall. Expert Advice to Find Your Best Pointe Shoes - When Less is More

Marlena Juniman, President of Prima-Soft, is a pointe shoe expert.  Here's a quick tip on toe padding and when less is more!

Prima Soft® En L'Air® Pointe Shoes
"Toe padding contributes to the comfort of the dancer while wearing pointe shoes. Some dancers prefer no padding while others might tend to use too much. Is there a happy medium? If the pointe shoes have been fit correctly the dancer will blister less and have more comfort while on pointe. Toe padding should be used to prevent friction between the skin and the material of the shoe. Toe pads should not necessitate that the shoes be fit longer and wider to accommodate them. Putting bulky or too much padding in the shoes will place the foot above the toe box and interfere with the dancer's placement, balance and ability to correctly 'roll through' her shoes."

'Pin to WIN' Winner!

Last month, we asked readers to send in photos that captured their summer intensive experience.   Lots of gorgeous photos were submitted and collected on the Pin to Win Pinterest Board

Congratulations! Mariam R. submitted this winning photo. She and her friends are kidding around and stretching outside after a day of dancing at Salt Lake City Ballet summer intensive. Mariam tells TheWorldDances, "This is my 6th summer intensive. We worked mainly on technique. The joy of performing for others inspires me to dance!" Mariam also sends a special shout out to her favorite teacher, Teryuo "Terry" Davis. As the winner of the Pin to Win contest, Miriam will receive a Harlequin Enthusiast Home Studio Floor.
