Expert Advice for Perfect Fitting Pointe Shoes
by Marlena Juniman

A pointe shoe that is fit too long and too narrow may 'fit the foot' but it will not work with the foot. Think of it as standing on the pointed end of a triangle -- not very conducive to achieving balance or placement. The foot must be IN THE BOX. This means that the dancer should not be dancing ON the shoes but IN them with the widest part of the dancer's foot as close to the floor or toe platform as possible. If the shoes are stretched out up at the 'throat ' of the shoe (where the knot of the draw string would be tied) the shoes are not accommodating this particular shape foot. The dancer's toes are pressing into the vamp of the shoe and not going straight down to the toe platform. The dancer will not be dancing IN the toe box but will be dancing ON it.

Missouri State University Awards Student with the American Harlequin Scholarship for Support of Dance Science

Congratulations to Madalyn Foley, the 2013 recipient of the Harlequin Floors Scholarship for Support of Dance Science at Missouri State University. Since 2012, Harlequin Floors sponsors this important scholarship fund ($9,000 over 3 years) for a deserving MSU student involved in the department of Physical Therapy and the Theater and Dance department joint research in dance science advances, specifically the effects of dancing on a sprung floors. Dr. James M. Hackney is the MSU leader in investigating the effects of a sprung floor on the impact of ballet leaps and jumps on the hips, knees, feet and ankles, as well as the muscles controlling these joints.

To meet the scholarship eligibility criteria, eligible MSU students must be a Sophomore, declared dance major, participate in the scientific study, be active in performing, an active volunteer and maintain a scholarly GPA. Students must also write an essay about the relationship between dance science and dance training to be considered for the award.

"I am glad that I got the opportunity to learn about what I am passionate about through a new, scientific perspective," says Madalyn. "I believe that this knowledge will help me throughout the rest of my education and my career. "

Harlequin Floors thanks Dr. Hackney, all participants and Missouri State University for their continued efforts to support this valuable research in the field of dance science.
