Meet Shaping Sound Star Teddy Forance
Shaping Sound -- a new dance company led by dance and choreography stars Teddy Forance, Travis Wall, Nick Lazzarini, and Kyle Robinson -- is reimagining the story ballet. The young company just wrapped up the national tour of their first show That's Where I'll Be Waiting. Created and choreographed by Forance, Wall, Lazzarini, and Robinson, the full-length dance production masterfully blends diverse dance genres and a carefully selected play list/score to tell the story of a love triangle set in a dream. Watch videos of performance clips and rehearsals here.
Shaping Sound's company members and its creative team have deep roots in the entertainment and convention/competition worlds. Many have starred on So You Think You Can Dance and danced on tour with major pop stars. Bringing this type of commercial background to a formal troupe highlights dance in a new way, re-conceptualizing the professional contemporary company.

When asked how the team of four utilized so many different genres in the That's Where I'll Be Waiting choreography, and how the company copes with so many different movement styles, Teddy Forance responded, "All the company members come from backgrounds of jazz, ballet, contemporary, and modern. Growing up in the convention world and learning process teaches you a balance between technique and understanding how to work your body in new ways. A lot of our stuff comes from a jazz background -- the technique, the spatial awareness, and stuff like that. We're all serious about technique and take a lot of ballet. So technically, we all already had that foundation, and we've fused a lot in the last two years. Now it's a matter of defining ourselves more as a group together so we're on the same page."
