Among the natural rights of the Colonists are these: first, a right to life; secondly, to liberty; thirdly, to property; together with the right to support and defend them in the best manner they can. These are evident branches of, rather than deductions from, the duty of self-preservation, commonly called the first law of nature.

EDITORIAL
It's Only Thirty Bucks
David A. Lombardo
It's only 30 bucks. You'd think it was the end of the world when I ask, and maybe it is to a certain extent. There certainly are a lot of politicians in Illinois that would like to see you lose your Second Amendment rights.
A recent Rasmussen survey conducted shortly after the shooting of two reporters in Virginia found that only 29 percent of likely voters thought more gun control laws would have helped prevent the murders. The same survey found 60 percent of the respondents said they didn't think any additional laws would have made a difference. Sixty-eight percent agreed with Donald Trump's position that it wasn't a gun problem but rather a mental health problem.
Despite the majority of Americans who believe the last thing we need is more gun control, Illinois legislators are already setting the stage to curtail-if not outright take away-your Second Amendment rights. There is only one gun-rights organization based in Illinois with lobbyists in Springfield, and that's the Illinois State Rifle Association.
Since 1903 the ISRA has been training law abiding Illinois firearm owners and looking out for their Second Amendment rights by lobbying in the State Capitol and monitoring the development and progress of legislation that affects its constituents. The ISRA is also very actively involved in relevant litigation.
While many organizations actively supported and helped shape Illinois concealed carry legislation, it is safe to say Illinois wouldn't have concealed carry if it weren't for the ISRA. The ISRA, with the support of the NRA, was the co-plaintiff in Shepard v. Madigan, challenging Illinois' unconstitutional total ban on carrying firearms for self-defense outside the home. The case was brought before the court as a result of Mary Shepard and an 83-year-old co-worker having been viciously attacked and beaten by a six-foot-three-inch, 245-pound man with a violent past and a criminal record. The two women were lucky to survive, as each of them suffered major injuries to the head, neck and upper body. Shepard was a trained shooter and had an out-of-state concealed carry permit, but it wasn't recognized in Illinois, so she didn't have a firearm to protect herself. The result of Shepard v. Madigan is our current Illinois concealed carry permit.
The ISRA has continually been at the forefront of litigating Second Amendment issues that affect Illinois gun owners, such as Friedman v. Highland Park and Wilson v. Cook County, both challenging assault weapon bans. Other high-profile cases include the ISRA v. Illinois State Police over FOID card privacy; both Moore v. Madigan and State v. Aguilar over the right to carry; and Ezell v. Chicago over prohibitions against gun ranges within Chicago city limits.
In the state capitol the ISRA has several lobbyists who, working in partnership with the NRA's lobbyist, are deeply immersed in anything relating to Second Amendment issues. Now here's the shocker: if you own just one firearm, whether it be your hobby or to protect yourself and your family, it requires the vigilance and dedication of ISRA employees to assure the state of Illinois and its various governing bodies have little or no negative impact on your rights. In fact, if you think about it, even if you don't own a firearm, it is still in your best interest that law abiding Illinoisans have the right to do so. And you know what? It costs money to do that.
In a state with approximately 13 million residents, 15 percent-or almost two million people-have Firearm Owner Identification cards, and more than 130,000 have concealed carry permits. Of the roughly two million firearm owners, only about 25,500 are members of the ISRA. Let that sink in for a moment: only 1.3 percent of the FOID card holders are members of the Illinois State Rifle Association and yet 100 percent benefit from the work of the ISRA.
That's flat-out shameful. If you own a firearm and you're not a member of the ISRA, you should be ashamed of yourself. Go to our website, scroll down to the ISRA icon and sign up for at least a one year membership. It is the best insurance policy you can buy to protect your Second Amendment rights in Illinois. It's only thirty bucks, for crying out loud.

NSSF Files Amicus Brief
in Highland Park MSR ban
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has filed a friend-of-the-court (amicus) brief in support of having the U.S. Supreme Court accept the case for review of the lower court's upholding the Highland Park "assault weapons" ban and high capacity magazine ban.
The NSSF Amicus Curiae Brief in Support of Petitioners in Arie S. Friedman and the ISRA v. City of Highland Park On Petition for writ of Certiorari to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit frames the issue to be reviewed as follows:
"Does the Constitution allow the government to prohibit law-abiding, responsible citizens from protecting themselves, their families and their homes with a class of constitutionally protected "Arms" that includes the most popular rifles in the Nation.
"Second, does the Constitution allow the government to prohibit law-abiding, responsible citizens from protecting themselves, their families and their homes with ammunition magazines that number in the tens of millions and make up nearly half of the Nation's total stock of privately owned ammunition magazines for handguns and rifles?"

The Bible, Guns and Self-Defense
by Gary DeMar Godfather Politics - August 28, 2015
Gun control is in the news again. Every time there's a shooting, guns are blamed, and yet 100 million gun owners did not kill anyone the day these news reporters were murdered. Liberals are calling for more laws to restrict gun ownership. How many more laws are needed to stop someone like the racist Virginia shooter? This guy had it in for the employees of the TV station. If he didn't have access to a gun, he might have used a knife. Timothy McVeigh used explosives. Muslim extremists use swords to behead their victims. Some murderers use poison.
I understand the grief that Andy Parker, the father of Alison Parker, expressed in his call for more gun control laws. He believes he must do something in memory of his daughter. Other than removing guns from every person in the United States by force, there aren't many more controls that can be put on people who want to kill other people. Why are people fleeing war-torn areas? They have no means to defend themselves against people with guns.
Additionally there is no way to stop the illegal importation of guns in the same way there is no way to stop the illegal importation of drugs into the United States. We would only be establishing a well-armed criminal class and turning Americans into sitting-duck victims.
I read a series of posts on Facebook by someone who claims the Bible does not support killing another person in self-defense. An article by William O. Einwechter is a helpful antidote to such thinking.

Scapegoat Alert!
D.C. Murders Increase, Police Chief Blames . . .
NRA/ILA - August 21, 2015
Murders in the District of Columbia are not nearly as common as they were a generation ago, when the city's crack cocaine gangs and former handgun ban held sway. However murders in D.C. are up by a third thus far in 2015, as compared to the first eight months of last year. And while the local police union faults the city's police chief, Cathy Lanier, for dismantling units that had kept drug gangs at bay, Lanier is pointing an accusatory finger at guns.
Lanier speculates that changes in gun laws around the country and the popularity of "high-capacity" magazines are responsible for D.C.'s worsening murder situation. The theory is odd, however. As the Washington Post reports, many of D.C.'s murders result from stabbings, not gunfire. And in 2013 the way that neighboring Maryland changed its gun laws was by banning magazines holding more than 10 rounds, banning "assault weapons" and requiring permits to purchase handguns. At the same time, similar gun and magazine bans were also imposed in Connecticut and New York. [More DC murders] |
Wal-Mart to Stop Selling Semiautomatic Rifles, Citing Declining Demand
Wall Street Journal - Paul Ziobro - August 26, 2015
Wal-Mart has said it will stop selling semiautomatic rifles due to declining demand, in a decision a spokesman said was months in the making. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will soon stop selling semiautomatic rifles, removing what have become politicized items from shelves for reasons the retailer says are purely business.
Wal-Mart, the nation's biggest seller of guns and ammunition, will eliminate AR-15s and other similar rifles, spokesman Kory Lundberg said Wednesday. Instead the retailer will carry more shotguns and other hunting weapons. Mr. Lundberg said the decision was based on shifting demand from shoppers. "It's about what customers are buying and what they're not," he said.
The change, reported earlier Wednesday by Quartz, comes as such semiautomatic arms, described by opponents as "assault weapons," remain a flash point in the national gun debate that is faced with yet another high-profile shooting. On Wednesday morning two television reporters were killed while conducting an interview in Moneta, Va. [ Read more Wal-Mart]
