Evolution in Progress: Trump on Guns
By Dean Weingarten on August 18th, 2015
There are several themes that are clear from Donald Trump's statements on the Second Amendment. First, he strongly associates the Second Amendment with self-defense. That's in opposition to nearly all anti-gunners. In the Heller decision of 2008, the Supreme Court Decision held that the Second Amendment applies to self-defense. Anti-gunners dismiss Heller as nonsense.
Second, Trump has always said that gun control laws will only disarm the good guys. The bad guys will then be the only ones with guns. Again, this is an enormous departure from the anti-gun position. They never concede that point because it undermines their whole argument.
Third, Trump now appears to understand that the anti-gunners' game is incremental degradation of the right to keep and bear arms. This shows a much greater understanding of the topic than he had back in 2000.
Has Donald Trump changed his views about the Second Amendment? It seems that his views have evolved through education. Fifteen years ago he likely had a murkier understanding of what "assault weapons" were. He didn't know how ineffective the current background check system is.
However he always believed that the Second Amendment applied to self-defense and that disarming good guys would leave only the bad guys armed. That makes him a bit different from most of the political pack. [Read the entire article here].

Social Security Update: Agency Backpedals as NRA and Pro-Gun Officials Press for Answers
Last month the L.A. Times indicated the Obama White House is eyeing ways to use the Social Security Administration (SSA) as a source of records for NICS, which includes a federal database of persons prohibited from possessing or receiving firearms. Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Tex), Chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee of the House Committee on Ways and Means, spearheaded a letter to Carolyn Colvin, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, cautioning that using the assignment of representative payees as a basis for reporting SSA beneficiaries to NICS "would be a dangerous overreach." Accordingly the letter urged the agency "to abandon any such plan." It also asked Ms. Colvin to specify whether or not SSA intended to pursue such a policy.
Colvin responded, saying, "SSA has not provided any names of beneficiaries to the NICS and is not considering sending names based solely on the beneficiaries having representative payees." Ms. Colvin did acknowledge, however, that "we are currently determining how we must comply with our NICS reporting obligations under Federal law" and "are looking at possible implementation scenarios." None of those scenarios, according to Ms. Colvin, "would refer all SSA beneficiaries with representative payees to the NICS." A careful parsing of Ms. Colvin's language, however, still leaves ample room for concern. [Read the entire article here] [Source: NRA/ILA]

Bloomberg Spends Again to Publicize His Bought-and-Paid-For Background Check Law
Oregon's "universal" background check law became effective Aug. 9, and already expectations are tempered. The state's Public Broadcasting network ran a story featuring a skeptical county sheriff who summarized the measure's likely effects as follows: "[T]he bad people are going to get the guns regardless. So I truly think it's a waste of time." Meanwhile the Register-Guard editorialized, "Oregon gun-sale background checks law gets off to a rough start." The article goes on to report, "Several sheriffs in mostly rural counties...have said they simply won't enforce the law at all." Advocates of civilian disarmament know that they cannot succeed unless the state knows which Americans actually own firearms. That process starts with creating a record of every firearm transfer.
Thus, Bloomberg, whose fortune helps bankroll gun control efforts throughout the U.S., is now ponying up again to publicize the Oregon law. According to the Register-Guard story, "Everytown for Gun Safety has reserved six-figures' worth of airtime" to run a television ad promoting Oregon's new law in the Eugene and Portland markets. The ad was announced at a press conference on Monday by Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy and will feature Portland's former police chief Mike Reese extolling the supposed ease of complying with the new requirements. Thus, despite the consistent failure of the current background check system to make a difference when it matters most, gun prohibitionists want to make a NICS check mandatory each time a gun changes hands. Gun Sales Surge in US after Chattanooga
The people of Chattanooga won't be caught off guard again. Gun sales in the Chattanooga area are surging in the wake of the July 16 attack that killed four Marines and one sailor. The surge comes amid what had otherwise been a "slow" summer of gun sales in the area.
According to News Channel 9, the buying spree began just hours after news of the Chattanooga attack broke. Carter Shooting Supply co-owner Kristi Manning said, "Thursday night, it immediately changed. It was honestly insane. I've seen it before. I've been doing this for 16 years, so I've seen it in the past where something tragic happens, and people kind of panic and want to feel secure. And that's what happened."
Manning said the attack caught everyone unawares and renewed a focus on personal safety. She said, "We're gun carriers. We're the South. We're Tennessee. We tote guns. We carry guns; we carry several guns. You'd never think it would happen here, but it caught us off guard."
In addition to personal safety, News Channel 9 reported fears that the attack will be used to justify more gun control also contributed to higher sales. [Read the entire article here] |
Alabama Church Builds Gun Range
"In the Name of Jesus Christ"
I don't know the doctrine of this particular Methodist Church, so I can't really endorse the church as a whole, but I do like the idea that they are willing to help teach their people to use their weapons safely and responsibly while reaching out to others by using a newly constructed gun range.
In Jemison, Alabama, Rocky Mount United Methodist Church decided to turn a snake- and vermin-infested gully behind their church building into a gun range and to use it as a ministry tool.
Pastor Phillip Guin said that the range was first conceived because several of the elderly women in the church owned guns but didn't know how to use them. So they used the range to educate them on gun safety and marksmanship. However, later on, the Church began to see a ministry opportunity for reaching out to the community. The safety training eventually became the Rocky Mount Hunt and Gun Club.
"This is an opportunity for us to reach out in the name of Jesus Christ in a setting that is completely unique-even odd by some people's standards. But who's to say that church can't happen right here," Guin said.
I don't think it odd at all. The Lord Jesus went out among the sinners, prostitutes, tax collectors (Matt. 9:10-13) and the like and sought to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10) among them. He went along the seashore and called fishermen to come and follow Him. He also went into the traditional place of worship, the Temple, and called people out from there too.
Though the club currently is composed of church members, they have others outside the church who are seeking to join. In fact they have even garnered the favor of Deputy Chief Marc McMinn of the Jemison Police Department, whose police department trains on the range on a regular basis.
Now, if indeed the true gospel that presents the life, work, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15:1-4) and calling sinners to repent of their sin (Matt. 4:17; 1 Jn. 3:4) is actually being communicated, along with making disciples (Matt. 28:19-20), then I am all for it. I pray that their endeavors will be used of God. [Source: Freedom Outpost]
