Obama Email Calls for New Gun Control
President Obama sent an email to everyone on his email list calling for new gun control measures. Here's what he wrote:
"Friend -
"We've had to come together as a nation too many times to mourn after horrific acts of gun violence. And right now, it's not good enough simply to show sympathy. We need to acknowledge that there's more work to do - that these tragedies have become far too commonplace. This is a conversation that folks need to have, and organizers like you are the ones who will move it forward.
"People across the country are stepping up, and OFA (Organizing for America) supporters and volunteers are working to prevent gun violence state by state and city by city - join their fight today.
"As we take the time to heal in the shadow of this most recent tragedy, we have to ask ourselves what more we can do as individuals and communities to prevent guns from getting into the hands of dangerous individuals. The lack of movement in Congress on this issue is incredibly frustrating. But their refusal to act won't stop progress. Because of organizers like you, states like Washington and Oregon have introduced successful restrictions on gun purchases, like common-sense background checks.
"No single reform will eliminate violence. But we can't give up, or act like this is some kind of new normal. We have to make progress where we can, and OFA and other groups have a real path forward.
"There's much more to do - so join OFA in working for it. I'm not giving up, and I hope you won't either. Every voice is important.
Thank you,
Barack Obama

Federal Court: 2A Right Reason
for Cops to Detain You
In a stunning move, the U.S. District Court of Western Michigan ruled the police have legal authority to detain individuals who exercise their rights under both the U.S. and Michigan constitutions to open carry a gun.
You may recall the story of Johann Deffert, who was minding his own business, walking down the street in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was lawfully open carrying a holstered handgun at the time. However Grand Rapids Police Officer William Moe responded to a woman's 911 call to report Deffert simply because he had a gun.
When the officer arrived, he witnessed that Deffert had a handgun and that he appeared to be "talking to himself." Consider that a church service was taking place nearby; no one thought the man might actually be praying. Deffert had gone out for breakfast and was on his way home. In any case Officer Moe acted as a complete tyrant. He drew his weapon, aimed it at Deffert, forced him to the ground and yelled at him for getting "everybody fired up around here."
As for the claim of Deffert "talking to himself," it has come to light that he was merely singing "Hakuna Matata" from the Disney film "The Lion King." Yeah, that sounds threatening, don't you think?
The federal court ruled last week that officers can stop you for simply exercising your right to keep and bear arms. They don't have to have any other reason. [Source: Freedom Outpost - Tim Brown - 6/22/15]

Wisconsin Repeals Handgun
Purchase Waiting Period
It should come as no surprise that Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin signed into law SB 35 earlier this week. The new law, effective immediately, repeals an antiquated law from the 1970s requiring a 48-hour waiting period for handgun purchases. The previous law requiring a waiting period for all handgun sales was enacted in Wisconsin in 1976, a time when background checks were not required for all firearm transactions taking place through a federally licensed firearms dealer. With Gov. Walker's approval, Wisconsin has taken a great step forward by removing this unnecessary burden placed on law-abiding citizens and FFLs. On behalf of the firearms industry, NSSF applauds the bill's sponsors, the elected officials who voted in support of this measure and Gov. Walker for signing this critical legislation into law. Legal Case Aims to Protect
Gun Rights for U.S. Citizens Overseas
U.S. citizens living overseas without an address stateside have problems with ATF Form 4473, but a federal appeals court recently breathed new life into a case challenging the ban on gun sales to Americans living abroad. The case, Dearth v. Lynch, takes up the argument of Canadian resident Stephen Dearth that was ruled against previously by a U.S. District Court.
Dearth, a natural-born U.S. citizen who lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and has no stateside residence, is unable to acquire firearms as he cannot answer question 13 on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Form 4473, which asks, "What is your State of residence?" Therefore, on two visits to the U.S. in 2006 and 2007, Dearth was refused the opportunity to purchase firearms.
The plaintiff originally filed suit in 2009, and it had been argued at the appellate level several times before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit agreed the case should be heard.
"There are too many unanswered questions regarding Dearth's particular situation," Judge A. Raymond Randolph wrote for the panel's 2-1 majority.
"A statute that prevents a law-abiding citizen from exercising his or her Second Amendment rights while back on U.S. soil, no matter where they happen to be living, needs to be challenged," said SAF Founder and Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb in a statement.
"When Mr. Dearth is allowed to present his case, we're confident the court will agree that his rights as a citizen are being violated simply because of his mailing address," he said. [Source: Guns.com]

Manchin, Toomey Interested
in Reviving Gun Control Push
As some of you may remember, in 2013 Senators Pat Toomey (R-Pa) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced they had reached a compromise on background checks for gun buyers in the aftermath of the Connecticut school massacre the previous December. The bill failed to get traction, but they're back at it again in the wake of the Charleston shooting. The two are now strategizing on a way to rejuvenate the background check bill and get it through Congress. In true liberal fashion, rather than present the bill and let it stand on its own merits, they gathered the Sandy Hook families and used them as background.
"We want to make sure we have the votes. Pat's going to have to, and I'll work with him, to get some of our colleagues on the Republican side," Manchin said, adding that he hasn't talked directly to Toomey about a revival. Manchin specifically mentioned an effort aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of people diagnosed with mental illness.
Though the effort is far from being fully formed, Toomey also said he's looking for opportunities to reintroduce something related to combating gun violence. "What I'm trying to figure out is, is there something that could get the support of the 60 votes that we would need in the Senate," Toomey said. "Joe Manchin was and is a great partner and someone I will continue to work with, and I'm open to exploring what is possible." He added that nothing was imminent, "but if we stay at it, I think we'll find a way to make progress."
