Father Pfleger:

Chicago's Catholic Archdiocese Cross to Bear

David A. Lombardo

Father Michael Pfleger is at it again, targeting Chuck's Gun Shop in Riverdale. As of this writing Pfleger plans to once again picket Chuck's Gun Shop this weekend on Saturday and attempt to prevent customers from entering the store. You can pretty much sum up Pfleger's intelligence and social awareness by simply understanding he plans to stand between Chuck's Gun Shop and an armed group who want to go inside. What could possibly go wrong with that plan? Truth be told, pretty much nothing, as time and again, armed, law abiding citizens across the country have proven to show far greater restraint and judgment in dealing with such situations than the likes of Father Pfleger.

John Riggio, the gun store's owner, is a friend and used to advertise on On Target Radio. Riggio, a quiet, polite gentleman, commits the mortal sin of selling guns to law abiding citizens who happen to live in the Riverdale area. If you've never visited Riverdale, let me assure you that many law abiding residents feel the need to own a firearm to protect their families.

Riggio shouldn't take this personally. Pfleger, who is Catholicism's modern day Tomas de Torquemada, has resurrected the Spanish Inquisition over the Second Amendment. Perhaps more to the point, Pfleger has also made annoying and embarrassing the Chicago Archdiocese the focus of his 40-year career as a priest. A couple of years ago, I contacted the Archdiocese to inquire about Pfleger and why the church was allowing him to take such a strong, reactionary position against the Second Amendment. I was told the church wasn't taking any stand; it was solely Pfleger's opinion. When I inquired why the archdiocese didn't shut him down, the response I was given was Father Pfleger is a somewhat special circumstance. More like special needs, if you ask me.

Pfleger has been pastor of Saint Sabina Catholic Church in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood of Chicago since 1981. At age 31 Pfleger became the Chicago Archdiocese' youngest pastor, but where pastors normally serve for only six to twelve years at a given parish, Pfleger has been with the mostly African American parish since 1981. It's a little bit like having a 20-year career in the Army and retiring as a Private - something ain't kosher.

Pfleger has consistently been an embarrassment to the Catholic Church. If the Chicago Archdiocese were run by any of its many Chicago Outfit parishioners, Pfleger would have been trunk music decades ago. He pals around with the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the virulently anti-American Reverend Jeremiah Wright, who spewed fire and vitriol from the pulpit of Barack Obama's Chicago church.

Pfleger is an attack dog trying to kill the Jerry Springer show and a veritable pit bull that's locked its jaws on Howard Stern's leg. Love those two clowns or hate 'em, they have the right to air whatever show they wish and let the court of public opinion decide if they financially survive.

But nowhere does Pfleger shine as much as when he's harassing Chuck's Gun Shop. Like his buddy Jesse Jackson, Pfleger has never seen a news camera he didn't love. He postures and pontificates for the news' mass market while simultaneously preventing, to the best of his limited ability, customers from going into Chuck's.

This man of the cloth, the purveyor of the Christian ethic, a shepherd guiding his flock, a mentor teaching the young how to lead a Christian life of forgiveness and understanding, called for his mob to drag John Riggio out of the store and kill him in the street.

Oh, how Catholicism has changed since I was in school. In the 50s we only had to worry about the nuns whacking the backs of our hands with a ruler. Now you have a sociopathic priest who threatens to have you dragged out of your store and whacked in the street by a mob he himself has assembled.

Of course it would never occur to Pfleger to go into a gang-infested area, you know, where people are using guns to kill one another, call out gang members and threaten to kill them in the street. No, because like all bullies, Pfleger is a coward and would never actually stand up to someone that would turn him into a grease spot on the ground without so much as a second thought. He knows what everyone else knows: law abiding citizens with guns aren't the problem; they're just a safe target that gets you free television coverage.

Illinois Legislature Passes

Concealed Carry Clean-Up Bill

Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, informed his membership that Senate Bill 836 has passed both the House and Senate last weekend and is on Governor Rauner's desk. He is expected to sign the measure, which is a list of technical items needed to improve the Firearm Concealed Carry Act. "We are disappointed that provisions for non-resident military service members to qualify for CCLs, concealed carry while hunting and clarification of due process were removed from the bill before it was allowed to pass to the Senate," he said.

The following improvements were included in SB836:

1. Provides an appeal process for persons denied a FOID card because of minor developmental disabilities. This is an initiative of mental health professionals seeking to remedy an injustice identified in existing law.

 2. Combines the function of the FOID card and Firearm Concealed Carry License for purchase and possession of firearms and ammunition. Licensees will only need to carry their CCL.

 3. Clarifies the "duty to inform." Presentation of a concealed carry license to law enforcement is sufficient to fulfill this obligation.

 4. Clarifies that the waiver of privacy in the Firearm Concealed Carry License application shall be limited to information needed to determine licensee's eligibility.

5. Allows emergency personnel and peace officers to secure a firearm when deemed necessary for safety.

6. Adds an exemption to the Unlawful Use of Weapons Act to avoid misunderstandings about a Concealed Carry Licensee's authority to carry a firearm.

7. Allows a licensee to exit his or her vehicle in a restricted parking lot without first unloading, for the purpose of storing the firearm in the trunk. This is the original "safe haven" concept that was inadvertently left out of current law, and provides an increased measure of safety.

8. Allows the sale of long guns to nonresident competitors at the World Shooting Complex, not subject to the 24 hour waiting period. This revenue generating measure is still subject to background checks and other appropriate safeguards.

U.S. Rep.: Force Gun Owners to

'Buy Insurance or Pay Fine'

U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) has introduced a bill that would force gun owners to have liability insurance or face fines of up to $10,000. According to Maloney the Firearms Risk Protection Act would curb so-called "gun violence," much like car insurance has lowered vehicle fatalities, she said, because gun owners would be more careful.

In a statement to the Hill, Maloney said: "We require insurance to own a car but no such requirement exists for guns. The results are clear: car fatalities have declined by 25 percent in the last decade, but gun fatalities continue to rise."

Maloney said auto insurance carriers incentivize drivers to take precautions to reduce accidents, but no such incentives exist for firearm owners. She wants to change that.

"An insurance requirement would allow the free market to encourage cautious behavior and help save lives," she said. "Adequate liability coverage would also ensure that the victims of gun violence are fairly compensated when crimes or accidents occur."

This is the second time Maloney, who is one of the biggest gun control advocates in Congress, has introduced the legislation, according to the Hill. A few weeks ago she also reintroduced legislation that would require sellers to obtain a background check for all guns sold at gun shows. [Source: WND - Leo Hohmann, 6/3/15]

Administration Preps New Gun Regulations

The Justice Department plans to move forward this year with more than a dozen new gun-related regulations, according to a list of rules the agency has proposed to enact before the end of the Obama Administration. The regulations range from new restrictions on high-powered pistols to gun storage requirements. Chief among them is a renewed effort to keep guns out of the hands of people who are mentally unstable or have been convicted of domestic abuse.

Gun safety advocates have been calling for such reforms since the Sandy Hook school shooting nearly three years ago in Newtown, Conn. They say keeping guns away from dangerous people is of primary importance. But such a sweeping ban would unfairly root out a number of prospective gun owners who are not a danger to society.

"It's clear President Obama is beginning his final assault on our Second Amendment rights by forcing his anti-gun agenda on honest, law-abiding citizens through executive force," said Luke O'Dell, Vice President of Political Affairs at the National Association for Gun Rights.

The Justice Department plans to issue new rules expanding criteria for people who do not qualify for gun ownership, according to the recently released Unified Agenda, which is a list of rules that federal agencies are developing.

"The Obama Administration hates the Second Amendment, and it's clear that every place where it can push, it will," said Michael Hammond, legislative counsel for the Gun Owners of America. "This is an indication of an anti-gun administration trying to annoy us in any way it can." [Source: The Hill]

Airlines Stopping Shipment of Hunting Trophies

According to a memorandum authored by the Africa Director of Lufthansa Cargo, the company has decided to stop its shipment of hunting trophies from "all Africa (Johannesburg Airport) origins." The memo indicates that this change will take place "with immediate effect."

Lufthansa is the third airline to announce changes to its trophy shipment policies, following similar announcements made by South African Airways and Emirates' cargo divisions. In contrast Delta Air Lines put out a statement on May 13, 2015, in which the airline confirmed that it would not discontinue its practice of transporting hunting trophies. The airline stated that "Delta accepts hunting trophies in accordance with all U.S. domestic and international regulations. . . ."

Safari Club International vows it will continue its ongoing work with the organization's partners in the hunting community to reverse decisions such as the one announced by Lufthansa and to demonstrate that such decisions harm rather than help wildlife conservation.
