A Monumental Scientific Reversal

As I look back on the body of scientific facts mankind has been taught, the opening line for the 1938 radio broadcast "War of the Worlds" immediately comes to mind. It was the fictional broadcast narrated by Orson Wells that sent Americans into a panic, thinking it was for real. Everyone thought we were alone in the universe until Wells said with great sincerity, "We know now that in the early years of the twentieth century, this world was being watched closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own."
The point is scientists assure us that scientific research is irrefutable until the next piece of scientific research comes out that begins with the sentence, "We know now..." which essentially says, "Oops, we screwed up." This is hardly a phenomena limited to contemporary times.
There was a time when people believed that the Earth was at the center of the universe and that the Sun, Moon and other heavenly bodies orbited around the Earth. Ptolemy's epicycle theory to explain the retrograde motion of Mars was a classic example of fitting scientific evidence into preconceived notions. Gee, that couldn't possibly happen today, right? Well, except for scientists cautioning us in the 1970s that our lifestyle was bringing on a new ice age, only to say 30 years later, when it didn't occur, "We know now that your lifestyle is causing global warming."
Until the late 1800s scientists believed that diseases such as cholera and Black Death were caused by a miasma, a noxious form of "bad air." In the late 1800s scientists issued a profound, "We know now." A variant of that theory appears to have resurfaced with reference to flying commercial or driving in a car full of coughing Cub Scouts.
As peptic ulcers became more common in the 20th century, doctors increasingly linked them to the stress of modern life and prescribed antacids as a cure. In the 1980s it was discovered that stress had nothing to do with it, and a bacterium, H. pylori, is what causes peptic ulcers. The veracity of that research was briefly called into question when a random sampling of people whose stock portfolios were heavily invested in GlaxoSmithKline, the company that made billions of dollars selling Tums antacid, developed severe ulcers upon hearing the news that Tums was no longer considered a treatment for ulcers.
For as long as I can remember, we've been told that animal protein is bad for our health, but scientific evidence now contradicts that conventional wisdom. We know now both animal and plant protein are beneficial for health, increase fat burning, reduce appetite and lead to automatic weight loss. Ever since that, "We know now," I am an unabashed consumer of dead cow.
Similarly science beat us over the head with "animal fats cause heart disease," but it turns out saturated fat and cholesterol actually lead to improvements in the blood cholesterol profile because both raise HDL, the good cholesterol, which is protective against heart disease. Pork, we know now, is a protein-rich substance that clears the skin, protects the liver, detoxifies the lungs and even cleanses the system of cholesterol. Okinawans - lauded as the longest-living people on the planet - are the only Japanese to eat pork. The Japanese as a whole do not rate high on the life expectancy table, only the pork eaters. I mean seriously, is there anything on Earth that isn't better if you add bacon?
And now yet another monumental scientific reversal has been announced. Studies on eggs, which we know are loaded with cholesterol, did not find a relationship between egg consumption and heart disease. Recent, multiple, parallel studies assure us that saturated fat and cholesterol were wrongly demonized and are in fact completely harmless for the majority of people. The finding follows an evolution of thinking among many nutritionists who say, we know now that for healthy adults eating foods high in cholesterol may not significantly affect the level of cholesterol in the blood or increase the risk of heart disease.
I know in my heart that ice cream will eventually be found to have long-term, life-enhancing benefits. But for now I'm going to make a huge pile of scrambled eggs and a triple rasher of crisp bacon and bask in the knowledge that I'm not harming myself in the process. At least until a different group of scientists issue a study on bacon and eggs that starts with, "We know now..."

Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act Gains Steam
The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which would allow licensed handgun owners to carry concealed firearms across state lines, has been introduced in both chambers of Congress. "The Second Amendment doesn't end at the border of your state," the NSSF's Larry Keane told The Hill. "This would enhance the rights of law-abiding citizens to protect them when they're away from home."
Gun rights groups are gearing up for a major push to move concealed-carry legislation through the new Republican Congress. The National Rifle Association (NRA) and other Second Amendment advocates are throwing their weight behind the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, said the bill is needed to clarify a "patchwork of state and local laws" that is "confusing for even the most conscientious and well-informed concealed carry permit holders. The constitutional right to self-defense does not stop at a state's borders. Law-abiding citizens should be able to exercise this fundamental right while traveling across state lines," Cox said last week.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is the chief sponsor of the concealed-carry bill in the upper chamber, while Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) is spearheading the push in the House. Cornyn's concealed carry bill came just three votes shy of passing in 2013, when Democrats still controlled the Senate. Seven of the Democrats who voted for the bill remain in Congress, potentially giving Republicans a shot at a 60-vote majority. Supporters of the legislation believe they can secure enough Democratic votes in the Senate to overcome a filibuster and get the legislation to President Obama's desk. While Obama is unlikely to sign the bill, given his support for stricter gun controls, getting the legislation through Congress would give Second Amendment advocates a significant victory.

SAF Funds Challenge To NJ Carry Law
The Second Amendment Foundation confirmed it is financially backing the legal challenge to New Jersey carry laws by Israel Albert Almeida, the Andover man who is battling to obtain a concealed carry permit for personal protection. Almeida, who is represented by New Jersey attorney Evan Nappen, operates a property management business that involves rent collections in high crime areas. He has been threatened numerous times, yet the Andover Township police chief turned down his permit application. When he took the issue to court, the court denied his application on the grounds that Almeida "failed to demonstrate a substantial threat." The case is in the state Superior Court's Appellate Division.
"This is part of our ongoing effort to have New Jersey carry laws declared unconstitutional," said SAF Founder and Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb. "We were drawn to Almeida's case because it provides one more example of how the Garden State's concealed carry law is simply Draconian in the way it is administered." Almeida's case is hardly unique in New Jersey or in other states where issuing authorities have broad, and frequently abused, discretionary power to arbitrarily deny carry permit applications.
"The court documents in this case suggest an appalling lack of regard for the danger Almeida faces while trying to manage his properties," Gottlieb observed. "People have threatened to kill him; there was an attempted carjacking; he's been chased by people. And what did the authorities suggest? That he hire security or find other ways to conduct his business. That kind of additional expense would literally put him out of business."
In appealing the court's denial, Nappen contended that the court's basis for denial, and the administrative code upon which it relied, "are not rational since they wrongly consider or fail to consider how handguns are actually used for self-defense purposes to dissuade attack."
"New Jersey authorities operate like the state is their personal fiefdom when it comes to gun permits, and that needs to change," Gottlieb said. "The rights of people like Mr. Almeida should not be subject to the arbitrary discretion of public officials for whom no reason will ever be good enough." |

Project ChildSafe Hits Major Milestone
When the firearms industry's Project ChildSafe program launched its "Own It? Respect It. Secure It." initiative eight months ago, industry companies and organizations were encouraged to use the power of their outreach to remind gun owners to securely store their firearms when not in use to help prevent access by children and other unauthorized persons. Today more than 1,000 companies and groups are supporting Project ChildSafe by using the "Own It? Respect It. Secure It." logo in their advertisements, videos, websites and social media outlets. Their efforts are helping the industry reach millions of gun owners with a safety message designed to help deter firearms accidents, theft and misuse.
"This milestone is more than a number; it's further testimony to the commitment on the part of the firearms industry, individual gun owners and the sporting community to make gun safety and personal responsibility a priority," said Steve Sanetti, President and CEO of NSSF, in an announcement that also noted firearm accidents are dropping dramatically and make up only 0.5 percent of all accidental fatalities. "With these tremendous supporters on board, and more joining every day, the more Project ChildSafe will succeed in this mission," Sanetti said. An outstanding example of a Project ChildSafe supporting company is Cabela's, the giant outdoor retailer, which has embraced the "Own It? Respect It. Last week Cabela's sent an email blast telling its huge number of customers that "Cabela's Has Teamed with Project ChildSafe to Promote Firearm Safety for the Whole Family" and included a link to its dedicated safety page. In addition a video lets viewers know the retailer is working with Project ChildSafe to provide public education on the importance of storing firearms responsibly when not in use. |
Texas Governor Sticks It to Moms Demand Action
Texas will become the 45th state to allow open carry, according to Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) in comments he made during his 2015 State of the State address. "Let me briefly follow up on a word I mentioned a moment ago - liberty," Abbott said. "In a single word, it encapsulates what this country stands for, what Texas symbolizes. I will expand liberty in Texas by signing a law that makes Texas the 45th state to allow open carry."
The anti-gun Moms Demand Action group, a Michael Bloomberg concoction, has been desperately attempting to do anything and everything to pitch their anti-gun propaganda to the public over the past year but overall has failed utterly.
The group's useful idiot leader, Shannon Watts, has lied about statistics, endorsed public indecency for the cause and has even gone after Jeff Foxworthy and Alan Jackson. Of course Watts is not the only one that has not been completely ethical in her behavior. Kelly Burke, the president of the Texas chapter of "Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America," is now being called into question regarding her testimony before the Texas Senate last Thursday, as many of her claims have been labeled a "bold-faced lie."
Last year, after applying Alinsky-style tactics in Oklahoma, a Tulsa Chipotle kicked out Moms Demand Action supporters for rude behavior. Additionally Moms Demand Action has also suffered losses at various businesses, including Kroger, Fred Meyer, Staples and Harris Teeter. This is just one of many results of the people being sick and tired of open communists and socialists who do not believe in individual liberty. Whether most politicians get it right or not, the recently elected Texas governor got this issue right. There is also a campus carry bill before the Texas Senate that is being considered as a measure to allow students to protect themselves.
