Editorial

Ever-increasing knee jerk reaction

David A. Lombardo

Earlier this week one of our On Target Newsletter subscribers opted out. We don't get very many opt outs, so when we do, I go into the program and see if they've given a reason. He wrote, "I disagree with your increasingly knee jerk political stances." He was apparently reacting to my OpEd piece last week about voter fraud in which I came out very hard on the need for every conservative to vote in the midterm election.

In that editorial I wrote, "Let's face it: the liberals have declared war on the very fabric of American life as we know it. Can anyone doubt that there is a concerted, orchestrated effort to undermine and eradicate the very philosophy of what made this country great? The concepts of personal independence, self-reliance, responsibility, honesty and morals are anathema to the liberal agenda to implement a new world order where a chosen few will dictate what's best for John Q."

A strong sentiment, without a doubt, but anyone that has followed my weekly editorials or listened to On Target Radio with any regularity knows that was not a knee-jerk reaction. Quite the contrary: it was a gradual metamorphosis over the past two years.

My grown-up job, as I like to refer to it, is as a journalist for a family of international publications which, when bolstered by research for On Target Newsletter and On Target Radio, exposes me to an enormous amount of news from many sources all over the world on a daily basis. When you add to the equation my recent foray into the world of politics as I helped Gretchen in her successful bid for Will County Board, a very clear picture emerged about just how bad things have gotten.

I didn't come to that way of thinking quickly but rather it was more like connecting the dots. I'd report on one subject, then another, then another, until a picture of what liberal progressives are doing began to emerge. Each egregious act is part of a progressive machination. Marginalizing Christianity and Judaism, increasingly Draconian gun control, monitoring telephone calls and emails, using the IRS against your political enemies, the militarization of law enforcement and widespread voter fraud, along with many others, are individual threads in what has become a work-in-progress tapestry depicting a new world order. These aren't ghosts dreamt up by an over-imaginative paranoid mind but rather events straight out of the mainstream media for all to see. Everything I wrote in that editorial and more are true and getting worse.

The midterm elections have sent a message. The last time I checked, Republicans will have control of 54 seats in the U.S. Senate and up to 250 seats in the House of Representatives. Additionally, Republicans scored huge gains on the state level as well, winning the governor's mansions and control of the legislatures in even traditionally blue states.

Having control of both houses bodes well for the Second Amendment, and considering many, many Democrats lost their seats both locally and nationally to 2A-friendly opponents, I doubt anyone is going to even consider trying to pass more gun control legislation.

Hopefully there will be a slew of repeals of progressive agenda laws and policies as the midterm elections will no doubt have some effect, but the question is "how much?" Liberals have yet to recover from Tuesday's shock but make no mistake: they will, and they're not going to bend to the will of the people. Those who have been ousted still have some time left to do plenty of damage before they have to pack their bags.

The time for vigilance is not over; truth be told, it never will be. We must stand guard and hold government accountable, and if that's a knee jerk reaction, then there's something in the water because millions of voters responded to a similar knee jerk last Tuesday.

PA Governor Corbett

signs strong pro-gun legislation

Pennsylvania Governor Rom Corbett (R) has signed a state preemption bill into law that is considered to be the strongest firearms preemption statute in the country. House Bill 80 strengthens the state firearms preemption statute to further ensure that firearm and ammunition laws are consistent throughout Pennsylvania. It provides a mechanism that allows citizens to seek legal remedies against localities whose gun control ordinances exceed state law by holding municipalities accountable and responsible for infringement of Second Amendment rights. The bill goes into effect in two months.

Desperate, angry anti-gun activists reach new low

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) decided to ratchet up the gore (and poor taste) in their latest series of anti-gun ads as midterm elections approached. Mischaracterized by CSGV as public service announcements, the only service these grisly ads provide to the public is alerting the electorate to the gun control community's increasingly angry, inflammatory and judgmental tactics. One of the ads depicts a man enjoying a meal in a diner, when he comes across a newspaper article about a shooting.  The camera then pans to the man's blood-soaked hands, while a narrator states, "You did not buy the guns.  You did not load the bullets.  You did not empty the chamber.  But you voted-voted for politicians that refused to support common sense gun laws.  Vote only for candidates who fight to reduce gun violence."  The ad implies that anyone who does not vote for CSGV-approved gun control candidates has blood on their hands. While the graphic nature of the ads is likely to grab the most attention, it's their message that truly conveys the mindset of the radical gun control fringe.  Most reasonable Americans understand that violent criminals make their own choices, and they alone are ultimately responsible for their actions.  [Source: NRA/ILA]

Canada shooting leads to preventive arrests

Two days after a "radicalized" man ran over two Canadian soldiers in a mall parking lot, a gunmen opened fire at Canada's National War Memorial and at Parliament Hill, killing one soldier and wounding a security guard. He was later killed by an armed guard. Within less than two days, rhetoric has risen unusually high for Canada in the wake of what have been called "terror attacks," bringing terrorism home along with fresh demands for new police powers. This time the new powers would include "preventive arrests," potentially taking the country down the slippery slope of guilty-until-proven-innocent authoritarian policies. Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney told Radio-Canada that the government is eyeing the thresholds established in Canadian law for the preventive arrests of people thought to be contemplating attacks that may be linked to terrorism. Officials are considering how to make it easier to press charges against so-called lone-wolf attackers. "The challenges are the thresholds-the thresholds that will allow either preventive arrest, or charges that lead to sentences, or more simple operations," Blaney said. "So what the prime minister has asked is for us to review in accelerated manner the different mechanisms that are offered to police to ensure everyone's security." A bill was already in the works prior to the shootings to strengthen the Canadian Security Intelligence Services' (CSIS) powers; Prime Minister Stephen Harper had already announced changes including his belief that police powers needed to be increased. "In recent weeks, I've been saying that our laws and police powers need to be strengthened in the area of surveillance, detention and arrest."

Detroit police chief says

armed citizens are curbing crime

Detroit Police Chief James Craig may not like it, but he's gone on record saying guns in the hands of law abiding citizens do have an effect on crime. Detroit has experienced 37 percent fewer robberies than it did last year, and amazingly Craig is crediting armed citizens for the drop. "Criminals are getting the message that good Detroiters are armed and will use that weapon," he said. Craig has a long-standing record of being opposed to civilians owning firearms. "I don't want to take away from the good work our investigators are doing, but I think part of the drop in crime, and robberies in particular, is because criminals are thinking twice that citizens could be armed. I can't say what specific percentage is caused by this, but there's no question in my mind it has had an effect," Craig said. The statistics also show 22 percent fewer break-ins of businesses and homes and 30 percent fewer carjackings during the same period. Insightfully Craig opined that gun ownership doesn't stop gang bangers from shooting other gang bangers. "They automatically assume another criminal is carrying," he said. "I'm talking about criminals who are thinking of robbing a citizen; they're less likely to do so if they think they might be armed."

As we recognize all of our veterans and active duty personnel this Veteran's Day I'd personally like to say thank you and God's speed to those who served in 1967 in the First Infantry Division - Danger Forward, my Dr. Charlie brothers in Company C - 1st Medical Battalion.

In particular I hope our Dust Off guys Rich Cunnare and Dennis Telischak are doing well.  They are the bravest men I have ever known.

Thanks guys, I still owe you a beer for all the cold ones you brought us in the field.
