Editorial
It is time to stand up and be counted
David A. Lombardo
I've said it before, and I'll say it again - elections have consequences. If you value your Second Amendment rights, listen up and let me give you a very contemporary civics lesson going on in Houston, Texas, right now.
This is a tale of Houston's first lesbian mayor, Annise Parker. Now before the three liberals who listen to our show start sending hate mail, let me assure you this is not anti-lesbian banter; this is about liberalism run amok.
Parker issued a subpoena requiring Houston church pastors to surrender "all speeches, presentations or sermons" on a variety of topics including the mayor and "gender identity." The subpoena controversy erupted amid a battle over an ordinance passed by the City Council in May which allows people to use public bathrooms designated for use by the opposite sex.
The measure is aimed at prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity which is now a "protected characteristic" under Houston law. It probably doesn't take much thought to conjure up the notion that more than a few Texans objected to the ordinance and none more so than local evangelicals.
A pastor-led coalition opposed to the ordinance submitted about 50,000 signatures-three times the number required-to force a voter referendum on the issue, but the city found sufficient "irregularities" to make the stack of paper insufficient, which prompted four people to file a lawsuit challenging the decision.
Parker, a self-declared lesbian, defended the subpoenas saying, "If the five pastors used pulpits for politics, their sermons are fair game." Excuse me if I gag when I tell you this, but as it happens, in this one, I'm on the side of the American Civil Liberties Union, who also finds this troublesome.
The good people of Houston knew from day one that Annise Parker was not merely a lesbian but a radical, leftist lesbian. Where were the pastors prior to the mayor's election; where were all those evangelicals who are now so outraged? There are consequences to elections, and Houston just got a practical application.
So how much influence did evangelicals have in the Houston mayor's election? It turns out probably not much. Here's an interesting factoid: there are 80 million self-identified evangelicals in the United States, and a recent poll shows that 50 percent of them are not registered to vote. It gets worse. Only half of the evangelicals registered to vote have ever voted in a presidential election, and, of those, only 50 percent of them have ever voted in a midterm election! So what does that have to do with the Second Amendment?
Obama's remaining two years in the White House have the potential to devastate your Second Amendment rights. This president no longer has anything to lose-no reelection concerns and a legacy that's sinking faster than Democrats can run away from the man. But Obama's an ideologue, and it presents him with the perfect opportunity to wreak havoc on your Second Amendment rights through a possible Supreme Court vacancy, federal judge appointments and, with the help of a liberal Senate, more anti-Second Amendment legislation.
If you're one of the 30 million evangelicals who are registered to vote but have never voted in a midterm election, you personally hold the power to change the face of the United States Congress! You think I'm exaggerating? Consider this.
In the 2000 presidential election, George W. Bush defeated Al Gore by only 537 votes out of over 100 million cast. In 2008 Minnesota Senator Al Franken defeated Norm Coleman by only 312 votes out of over 2.8 million cast. And in a recent state legislative race in Florida, the election was decided by only 2 votes out of nearly 12,000 cast.
On November 4th put down your Bible, unstrap your gun, walk into a polling place and do the right thing. The evangelical voting block has the power to deny this president and the liberal Senate the ability to do any further harm if they would simply go vote in a midterm for the first time. It's time we show liberals that elections have consequences.

Nation's capital joins 50 states in concealed carry
Washington, D.C., has responded to a judge's ruling this summer that struck down the District of Columbia's ban on carrying a firearm outside of the home. The ruling opens up concealed carry permits to both residents and visitors for first time in nearly 40 years. The "may issue" law requires residents to show a specific reason why they need to carry a handgun for self-defense as in a handful of other states including Maryland, New Jersey and New York. Mayor Vincent Gray has already signed a temporary version of the bill, making it possible for people to start applying for concealed carry permits next week. The law is not without critics.
Washington, D.C., Police Chief Cathy Lanier appeared before the D.C. Council, pressing for a change. One of the provisions of the bill would ban the carrying of handguns within 1,000 feet of a public event, demonstration or dignitary under police protection but requires law enforcement to warn individuals to leave first before resorting to arresting them. "Organizers of large events that are publicized in advance should not have to hire police officers to warn gun owners to keep their weapons at home," Lanier said. "The fact that the event is a gun-free event and is both posted and advertised should be sufficient notice."

New UK gun policy should be a
warning to American gun owners
Alan Gottlieb, Chairman, Citizens For The Right To Keep And Bear Arms (CCRKBA), pointed out in his latest tome that a new policy announced by the British Home Office recently to allow unannounced searches of the homes of registered British gun owners should raise alarms among Americans who are threatened with increasingly restrictive gun laws pushed by wealthy anti-gunners including billionaire Michael Bloomberg. "This is an alarming development in Great Britain," said Gottlieb, "and it ought to serve as a warning to American gun owners and Constitutional activists concerned not only with their Second Amendment rights but also their Fourth Amendment rights. In Washington state, where CCRKBA is headquartered, there have already been attempts to include such language in so-called 'assault weapons' ban legislation.
According to Fox News, prior to the new regulations, British gun owners were subject to visits by the authorities. However, these required prior notification. The new policy does not. "British authorities argue that the new policy is necessary based on so-called 'intelligence' indicating a specific threat," Gottlieb observed, "but there is considerable danger in this revision because such guidelines could be easily abused. We are living in an era when government, under the rather broad arguments of national and local security, is becoming ever more intrusive. Our delineated civil rights, at least in America, include the right to keep and bear arms, and the example now coming from Great Britain is that this right is being systematically eroded to the point that it is becoming a heavily-regulated privilege." |

Holder's top deputy resigns
over Fast & Furious guns used in Phoenix crime
The top deputy to Attorney General Eric Holder announced his resignation on Thursday amid revelations that Operation Fast and Furious scandal guns were used to harm Americans in Phoenix in 2013, a development top congressional Republicans say President Obama's administration sought to cover up.
Documents released by conservative government watchdog group Judicial Watch-and put forward by Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA)-show that an assault rifle purchased as part of Fast and Furious was used in a Phoenix-area crime in July 2013 that left two people wounded.
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a Thursday statement: "Our lawsuit against Phoenix exposed how the Obama cover-up of Fast and Furious is ongoing. Eric Holder's Department of Justice is a mess. It has endangered the public and is engaged in an ongoing cover-up of its insanely reckless Fast and Furious gun-running operation. Judicial Watch appreciates the refreshing diligence of Senator Grassley and Congressman Issa in pursuing the truth about Fast and Furious." |
NYPD requires Facebook profile
and password to get gun permit
New York Governor Cuomo's SAFE Act is showing it true colors. In Watervliet, NY the police department is requiring that petitioners for pistol permits hand over their Facebook profiles as well as their password. Watervliet Chief of Police Ron Boisvert tried to cover his tracks when asked about it by saying it should not have been included in the packet but that it was for internal use only. What exactly does that mean? Boisvert said they do require permit seekers to log into their Facebook account and let the police snoop through it. "We ask the applicant to log on to Facebook in front of us. Pages they've looked at, friends - anything that reflects on the character of the applicant," he said. If Boisvert is saying that giving the password to a permit seekers Facebook account is not required, then why is it on the form regardless of whether it is for internal use only or not? And to go on from that point, why would any of my personal information I am submitting for my permit be used for anything other than internal use?
If that is not enough to make New Yorkers question how much the SAFE Act has improved their lives and what kind of state they actually live in, the veiled threat by Chief Boisvert issues when people refuse his probing might. When asked what happens if people refuse to facilitate their own injustice, Chief Boisvert flippantly declares: "I'd just note the fact and send it to the Judges." That is to say, thanks to the corrupt and punitive "May Issue" system that New York has, that gives the ability to deny 2nd Amendment rights to an "issuing authority," those who refuse to submit to Boisvert's electronic voyeurism will be denied a permit and upon appeal the judges will fully be aware of your contempt of cop. |
