Democracy: Put up or shut up
David A. Lombardo
The next time someone whines to me about politicians, I'm going to club them like a baby seal. The older I get, the more I learn. And helping a campaign for a county board seat has been a true learning experience.
Over the years I've helped a number of candidates prep for debates and develop written material, but I've never actually been actively involved in the entire process. Believe me when I say democracy ain't for the faint of heart.
If you're not happy with your elected officials, I have to ask a simple question: what have you done to make it better? For most of you the answer is not a damn thing other than complain. I know you're really busy but put down your latte and listen up; I'll break it down for you using Will County as an example.
There are about 388,164 registered voters in Will County, and for the sake of argument, let's say about half are Democrats and half Republicans. After attending one outhouse full of fund raisers, meet-and-greets and parades, I am here to tell you the vast majority of the 194,132 Republicans aren't doing squat.
It's the same faces at all the events. When I mull over all the bodies that I have seen participating in the process, I'd estimate there were about 200 people-or one-tenth of one percent of the Republican voting base in Will County-that dedicated countless hours and money to find, cultivate, nurture and support candidates.
Some folks bellied up to the bar and volunteered to run; some were drafted and agreed because there was no one else. Even fewer had the resources to fund a campaign, so a very precious few donated their own money heavily to help them out. Getting even ten bucks from the vast majority of Republican voters was a futile effort even when a candidate stood for the principles they said were important.
Yet those same individuals will talk about their new shotgun or an upcoming hunting trip. There's enough money and time for that but not enough to promote good government in a state that ranks as one of the most corrupt in the country.
So candidates and a handful of the faithful stayed up until the wee hours of the morning, mailing campaign literature, knocking on doors and generally put their lives on hold to do the best job possible. It takes a ton of bucks to mount a campaign for even a run for the county board, let alone a statewide office.
These are everyday folks with jobs, families and kid's athletic events to attend, and they either put them on hold or they just work all night to get the job done. They do it because, just like you, they're tired of the Democratic, autocratic rule of Illinois, and they want to make a difference. But the real difference is they're putting their money where their mouth is.
On the Democratic side of the aisle, candidates flat-out lie. They don't put forth anything remotely resembling a platform of their candidacy. Instead they run attack ads on the theory that enough good lies will force voters to vote for the alternative: some nutcase liberal who doesn't have the guts to tell the public what they really believe in.
Worse, some of them have the deep pockets to carry out character assassination because the money rolls in from Bloomberg, Soros and other left-wing nutjobs. Money from outside Illinois is funding some of the most critical races, and still Republicans are, for the most part, unwilling to give up a week's worth of Starbucks to make a donation, let alone actually help a candidate get the work done. And when it comes time to go to the polls, what happens? Republicans can't turn out the vote; they sit on their cheeseburger-enhanced butts and don't vote, saying, "It won't make a difference; this is Illinois, and we're not going to get a Republican elected."
You know what? If you don't like having liberals tell you how to live every aspect of your life; if you don't like ever-increasing taxes and decreasing personal freedoms; if you don't like how the Second Amendment and all the rest of the Bill of Rights gets trashed, I'd suggest you put up or shut up. If you don't participate, you deserve what you get, and you damn sure haven't earned the right to complain.

Bloomberg gun control group's
endorsements are incumbent-heavy
According to a Wall Street Journal article
, when last year's push for expanded background checks failed, Michael Bloomberg's gun control organization said it would have to change Congress to get different results. But when the former New York City mayor's Everytown for Gun Safety endorsed 78 candidates running for federal office this year, the list was heavy on incumbents.
It passed on a series of tough races in which gun control advocates are challenging sitting congressmen. Mr. Bloomberg's group endorsed 61 House members, 53 of whom are incumbents. Of the other eight, five are Democrats running for open seats being vacated by Democrats, and two are Democrats running for open seats being vacated by Republicans. Only one, Democrat Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey, is running against an incumbent, GOP Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen.
In the Senate Everytown endorsed 16 Democrats, all but two of whom are incumbents, and GOP Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). The group also backed Democratic Reps. Bruce Braley of Iowa and Gary Peters of Michigan, who are running to hold Democratic Senate seats in their states. Staying out of races where candidates face an uphill climb lets Everytown, and other interest groups, juice their electoral records.
The more winning candidates they endorse, the more they can say their seal of approval is worth. "We don't look to the NRA or their grades to make our endorsements," said Everytown spokeswoman Erika Soto Lamb. "An 'F' from the NRA is their evaluation and not ours."
Beyond the endorsements, the only ad buy for a federal candidate in the November election Bloomberg has funded is $12,500 on behalf of Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL). Bloomberg in April said he would spend $50 million to build a gun control infrastructure and back candidates who back his gun control agenda in the midterms. Everytown officials said last week they are more focused on state races in Oregon and Washington State. This as the NRA has funded ads attacking Bloomberg personally in Colorado and Georgia, where it is tying him to Democratic Senate candidate Michelle Nunn. [Source: Wall Street Journal]

Congress seeks Operation Choke Point stories
U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) is asking businesses affected by Operation Choke Point to come forward and tell their story through a new email address, chokepointstory@mail.house.gov, for businesses. The information provided will not be shared without consent. Through Operation Choke Point, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and Department of Justice attempted to stop financial institutions from offering financial services to some regulated industries. This operation was first aimed at non-depository lenders but expanded to ammunition and firearms sales, among other things. "This platform was created so that if you own a business and have been affected by Operation Choke Point, you can share your story so that I can continue to apply pressure to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Department of Justice and other federal agencies who are applying unnecessary pressure on you," Luetkemeyer said.

NICS checks show gun purchases strong in 2014
New numbers reported by the FBI suggest that Americans may be buying firearms at a slightly higher rate in 2014 than they did in 2012, following a record number of checks during the "surge" brought on by President Barack Obama's re-election in November 2012 and his subsequent campaign for gun control.
Because Americans bought guns at an unusually high rate in 2013, some commentators have compared the 2013 numbers to those in 2014 and, on that basis, claimed that gun purchases are in serious decline. However that's like saying that a professional football team's offense is waning because after racking up 30 points in the first quarter and 40 points in the second quarter, it has scored only 24 points in the first eleven minutes of the third quarter. Thus far in 2014 there have been 8.33 million checks for purchases of firearms, compared to 8.29 million for the same period in 2012 and smaller numbers in previous years. These figures don't include checks conducted for the purposes of purchase (like FOID in Illinois) or carry permits or several relatively uncommon categories of checks, nor do they indicate how many firearms were transferred as a result of the checks. NICS check numbers don't indicate gun sales as accurately as firearm manufacturing and import statistics, but they are more up-to-date in general, and they are updated on a monthly basis. |
Pastors to lesbian Houston mayor:
Don't mess with Texas preachers
If anyone thinks the old adage "Don't mess with Texas" is hyperbole, think again. When Houston's lesbian mayor Annise Parker and her city council failed to uphold the law, it didn't take long for Texans to saddle up and take on the enemy, only this time it was Texan preachers that put on their spurs. The preachers took umbrage with Parker's sexual preference, the proposition of a "bathroom bill" that would allow men to use women's bathrooms and her ignoring the law concerning a citizen's initiative to turn her warped bill on its head. Calling Parker to task from the pulpit resulted in Parker filing a lawsuit and moving on with the discovery process; subpoenas were issued to the pastors to turn over their sermons and communications that focus on her.
Executive director of the Texas Pastor Council, Dave Welch, one of five pastors who received the subpoenas, said he would not be intimidated by Parker nor would he comply with the city's demands. "My answer to that is, bring it on," he said.
Not one of the five pastors is listed as a plaintiff in the lawsuit, which was filed after the citizens' initiative drew more than three times the required signatures, was certified by the city secretary and then rejected by Parker and the city's attorney.
In a Fox News interview, Welch said that Lone Star State pastors are organizing to hold a "Don't Mess with Texas Pulpit Sunday" event. "We are dealing with bullies used to getting away with abuse of power," Welch said. "We called their bluff on this."
Russell Moore, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, told Starnes, "The government has absolutely no reason to bully congregations who are speaking out about what they believe. It's none of the government's business."
What's even more interesting is that apparently Mayor Parker pulled a Barack Obama when it came to the subpoena of the pastor's communications and sermons. According to Attorney Feldman, Parker had nothing to do with the subpoenas and that she was never informed. However when Fox pressed him on when she became informed, Feldman said, "When you guys broke the story." Doesn't that sound just like a Barack Obama statement, "I learned about it in the news"? Clearly these Texans are not all hat and no cattle. They've already lassoed a lot of bull. |
