Editorial
The fallacy of gun-free churches
David A. Lombardo
With religion essentially being purged by both the government and the media from the American psyche, anything that pertains to religion is kept from view. If you're Christian or-God help you-Jewish, you're persona non grata in the public eye. To the faithful it's a bit disconcerting, yet there is a certain comfort in anonymity, in being able to worship as you see fit without someone looking over your shoulder or writing about you in the press. But there is a dark side to being persona non grata.
Without a doubt, even the most minor peccadillo committed by anyone who so much as owns a Bible will splash front page above the fold in every newspaper in the country, but when the focus of the bad news relates to something that has happened to churches or their congregants, not so much. We certainly don't want to portray the faithful as victims unless, of course, the faithful practice some deviant, psychotic religion. Then we're back to front page, above the fold, as the nutballs are painted as victims of the intolerant. After all, objecting to stoning of women is merely a case of intolerance and failure to understand the culture.
The news blackout of crimes committed against rational people who participate in what 99% of Americans consider mainstream religions has those practitioners believing they are fundamentally safe going to church or temple and otherwise practicing their religion. But the statistics of violence in our churches and temples are downright frightening.
In his book, Evil Invades Sanctuary: The Case for Security in Faith-Based Organizations, Carl Chin documents the number of deadly force incidents (DFI) at faith-based organizations in the United States. Between 1999 and 2014 there were 792 deadly force incidents including 298 (37.6%) that resulted in someone being killed, and the annual numbers are rising. In 1999 there were 10 incidents, accounting for 22 people killed, in churches. By 2006 the numbers rose to 30 killed in 27 incidents, and last year that number had risen to 45 killed in 132 incidents.
The highest number of deadly force incidents-148-occurred in the course of a robbery; 103 were related to domestic violence. Ninety-eight were random violence; 85 were personal conflicts other than domestic violence; 65 involved individuals with confirmed mental illness; 64 were gang-related; 42 were the result of religious bias; and 14 were drug-related. Almost 58 percent-or 472-of the 792 incidents involved a gun, and 48 were the result of explosives including Molotov cocktails.
There were a total of 788 aggressors of which 722 were male and 66 female. Of those, 190 had an affiliation with the church, such as member of the congregation, past member, employee or volunteer.
Four hundred sixty incidents were caused by a single attacker and 174 by multiple attackers; 256 incidents occurred inside the building with another 526 occurring on ministry property or at an activity location.
Let's face it, churches and synagogues are easy targets. They are perceived by the scum of the Earth to be gun-free zones, making them a feeder lot for predators. If you want to rack up a body count, where better than a church? And while participating in church activities may give one inner peace, carrying a concealed firearm while in church helps assure one's outer peace.

Ezell wins: Chicago to get gun ranges
A federal judge has sided with the Second Amendment Foundation on key points of an ongoing legal action against the City of Chicago that challenges the city's municipal code regarding gun ranges inside the city. The case, Ezell v. City of Chicago, challenged the city's code by asserting that the regulations involving installation and operation of gun ranges inside city limits are burdensome. In a 32-page decision U.S. District Court Judge Virginia M. Kendall concurred with SAF's positions on the city's zoning and requirements regarding hours of operation. SAF had earlier defeated the city's total ban on gun ranges in 2011. "While SAF did not get complete relief with Monday's ruling," said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb, "our persistence in this issue, coupled with effective litigation, caused the city to actually repeal many of the rules we challenged, even before the court could address them. That's an indication the city knows there were problems with the code as written, and it demonstrates that when an in-depth analysis of gun laws is undertaken that requires proponents to prove those laws would be effective, they can't." In her ruling Judge Kendall noted that Chicago police officials "admitted that they had no data or empirical evidence that any criminal impact would occur due to the presence of a firing range, or that it would be lessened by placing ranges in manufacturing districts." Indeed, plaintiff's expert Lorin Kramer "testified that he was unaware of any location throughout the country where crime increased as a result of a gun range in that location."

ISRA's Pearson stresses November election
crucial for 2A supporters
For the Second Amendment this election may be the most important event since 1791. Why do I say that? The reason is the Senate of the United States is at stake. The United States Senate confirms justices to the federal court system. This is important because nine of the thirteen Federal Court Districts now have a preponderance of liberal judges. Moreover we are one vote away from disaster in the U.S. Supreme Court. We cannot leave the United States Senate in Democratic hands. You can bet President Barak Obama will push to get confirmation by the Senate for every liberal federal judge possible in the next two years in order to "pack" the court system as full of left-wing judges as he can. If the President gets away with this, we will be in a 40-year battle to save the Second Amendment. We in Illinois have one chance to change the course of history. All of us must support Jim Oberweis and do everything possible to defeat Dick Durbin. This will help preserve the balance in the United States Senate. If Dick Durbin is re-elected, I predict that he will retire and be replaced by a new, younger, ultra-liberal person. Who might that be? My best guess is that it would be Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky of Chicago, Democrat, 9th Congressional District. Congresswoman Schakowsky is a vehement anti-gunner who will be around for a long time. Gov. Jerry Brown signs California gun restriction
California will become the first state that allows family members to ask a judge to remove firearms from a relative who appears to pose a threat, under legislation Gov. Jerry Brown said Tuesday he had signed. The bill was proposed by several Democrats and responds to a deadly rampage in May near the University of California, Santa Barbara. Relatives of the victims and other supporters of the bill said the parents of 22-year-old Elliot Rodger were thwarted in their attempts to seek help for their troubled son before the rampage. Supporters had said such a measure could have prevented the attacks, winning out over critics who said it would erode gun rights. "If both of these laws had been in place on May 23, things could have been very different," Rodger's father, Peter Rodger, said in a statement Tuesday night. "California, today, is a safer state because of this legislation. Let's hope other states follow." Under the California bill, whoever seeks the restraining order would have to sign an affidavit under oath. If they lie, they could be charged with a misdemeanor. A court hearing would be held within 14 days after the restraining order is granted to give the gun owner a chance to argue there is no danger. Republican lawmakers and some Democrats voted against the measure, known as AB1014. [Source: Associated Press] |
New Jersey AG revises sentencing guidance
for gun law violations
In a stunning outbreak of sanity in the Garden State, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain has reversed his earlier decision to seek prison time for Shaneen Allen, a single mother from Philadelphia who was facing felony prosecution for misunderstanding concealed carry reciprocity rules. The decision came after John Hoffman, acting New Jersey Attorney General, issued statewide guidance to county prosecutors clarifying the application of New Jersey's mandatory sentencing scheme to certain minor firearm violations. These developments mean that not only will Ms. Allen and her children be spared the ordeal of her facing a felony conviction and lengthy prison term, but also that other travelers who unwittingly violate New Jersey's harsh gun laws may also avoid a similar nightmare. While we certainly welcome these developments, the enduring lessons of Shaneen Allen's case (and the anguish and upheaval it has already caused her and her family) should not be forgotten. Even under the new guidance-which is merely advice on the law, not binding law itself-the simple act of carrying a firearm for purposes of self-defense is still presumptively criminal and still presumptively leads to mandatory imprisonment.
