Lyman's new universal gun cleaning products are designed to direct and center the cleaning rod and jag through the chamber, protecting the chamber and the bore from abrasion by the cleaning rod during regular cleaning. It fits most bolt actions and even includes a special adapter sleeve for the AR-15. The set comes with interchangeable tips that cover bore sizes from .17 up to .416 and the thread-on nozzles prevent the guide from sticking in the chamber. The Universal Bore Guide Set works with most cleaning rods, like Lyman's new Universal Cleaning Rod System and Jag and Brush Set.

Editorial
Home Invasion
David A. Lombardo
One of the things we often hear from our students when we discuss dealing with a home invasion is that they wanted their wives to attend. The story usually ends with she refused because she wasn't interested in learning how to use a firearm let alone potentially shoot someone.
Okay, that makes sense. In his book, On Killing, David Grossman points out how it's not in our DNA to just kill people. If it were, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now, having gone extinct a long time ago.
While the odds are fairly slim of your having a home invasion while you're home-provided you live in a safe neighborhood-knowing what to do and being prepared to do it are the best insurance policy you can have in the event it ever does occur. And what greater tragedy than to have someone in your home harmed as a result of a home invasion because they didn't know how to use the one tool that was likely to save them? But just what are the odds that your family will be the victim of a home invasion?
To some extent getting exact numbers is a bit slushy. Some state statutes define home invasion; others do not. Oddly it is not a legally-defined federal offense, though in Illinois it is defined. It is also defined in Michigan, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana and Las Vegas.
The FBI defines robbery as a violent crime; it is the "taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear." The FBI does not use the term "home invasion," but they do refer to robbery within a residence or the taking of property from a residence while someone is at home.
According to the latest statistics from the FBI there were 59,889 robberies that occurred within a home in 2012, about seven every hour. That is one invasion into a home with family members present every nine minutes.
It is one thing to sit in the comfort of your home sipping a chardonnay over dinner and intellectually discussing with your guests that you don't believe people should own guns or that you would never take another's life. When I was in the Army, we used to joke that there are no pacifists in foxholes. Joking aside, believe me, it is a dramatically different thing to call 911 as you're watching someone break down your door and go for one of your children. I readily admit it's not likely to happen, but statistically neither is your house burning down or a flood sweeping it away, yet you have the insurance you need in the unlikely event one of those occurs.
A firearm, coupled with the proper training, is nothing more than an insurance policy. While it is certainly reasonable not to want to shoot someone, we're not talking about shooting your Uncle Bob or the nice, old gentleman next door. This is about looking at evil face-to-face and being able to protect yourself and your family from harm that you would otherwise be powerless to stop. Should that happen, how will you feel intellectually in the aftermath knowing you could have learned how to protect your family but didn't?

Traditional ammo ban to
cause shortages, price spikes
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has released a new report demonstrating the negative effects that the State of California's ban on the use of traditional lead ammunition in hunting will have on hunters, the state's economy and wildlife conservation. That report, commissioned by NSSF on behalf of the firearms and ammunition industry, was presented today at a public hearing of the Wildlife Resource Committee of the California Fish and Game Commission.
The survey-based report by Southwick Associates quantifies the problems that this ban will cause. Non-lead ammunition is not available for about half of hunting calibers, and the report found the California ban will cause severe shortages nationwide. Due to technical and market-based constraints on manufacturers, the implementation of AB711 will at least triple the price of ammunition, driving more than one-third of the state's hunters to hunt less or to stop hunting completely. With the loss of more than 50,000 hunters in the state, California's economy will see a loss of millions of dollars in salaries and in tax revenue. In addition, as hunters are the primary source of conservation funding in the state, a dramatic decline in hunters means fewer dollars for wildlife conservation. [Source: NSSF]

NFL hires pro-gun-control Biden aide
to be top lobbyist
The National Football League announced that a former aide to Vice President Joe Biden will be the league's top lobbyist as the league reels from Ray Rice's domestic abuse video and child abuse allegations against Adrian Peterson. Cynthia Hogan, the former Deputy Assistant to the President and Counsel to the Vice President of the United States, was named the league's Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Government Affairs. She helped coordinate the Obama administration's gun control efforts and was on the Senate team that helped pass the Violence Against Women Act. "The complex and compelling issues of interest to the NFL and the opportunity to help shape policy on those issues is a unique and exciting challenge," Hogan said. "I could not be more excited about joining the NFL team." Hogan will be based in the NFL's D.C. office and will develop and implement the league's public policy and legislative initiatives and work with NFL teams on local and state issues. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell hired four prominent female "senior advisers" to help the league with its domestic violence policies as women's groups like the National Organization for Women have called for his resignation. On Tuesday Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) said she will introduce a bill to revoke the NFL's anti-trust exemption because the league allows Washington to use the Redskins nickname.

Harvard: Millions of dollars more for gun control
Harvard University's School of Public Health is set to receive a $350 million donation to study gun violence and other "complex health threats challenging the U.S. and the world," CNN reports. The donation, the largest ever received by the university, is being made by the Morningside Foundation which is run by the descendants of Hong Kong real estate tycoon T.H. Chan, for whom the school will be renamed. Billionaire bankrolling of the anti-gun movement is perhaps the most significant new development in the gun control debate in our lifetime. The Chan family chose Harvard to receive its $350 million donation at least in part because one of the members of the family attended the school previously. However, Harvard's School of Public Health already had a long record of aggressive support for gun control, largely funded by the Joyce Foundation and other progressive donors. Its Injury Control Research Center, led by anti-gun public health researchers David Hemenway and Matthew Miller, was the source of much of the biased anti-gun advocacy "research" that convinced Congress to prohibit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from paying for any more of it with the taxpayers' money. |
Prohibitionists give up on semi-auto bans?
Not so fast
An article written by the NRA Institute for Legislative Affairs notes that, for the last 25 years, banning so-called assault weapons has been at the forefront of the anti-gun agenda. However, in recent days, an article from ProPublica and a study from The Center for American Progress indicated that the gun control establishment is shifting away from advocating for semi-auto bans and towards background checks/registration. The coincidence of these publications appearing days apart hints at what might be public relations scheming rather than a genuine shift in viewpoint. While this supposed de-emphasis on semi-auto bans should be met with skepticism by all gun rights supporters, the items discussing the reevaluation of priorities are instructive in that they illustrate the quarter-century-long campaign against semi-autos was unjustified from inception. Even though the gun control community's emphasis may have shifted to background checks and registration, their tactics are the same. Similar to the anti-semi-auto campaign, gun controllers continue to rely on wild rhetoric and misinformation. The most notable recent example is the continued misuse of the statistic purporting to show that 40 percent of firearms sales occur without a background check, to impress upon people just how supposedly vital background check/registration legislation is. Even though the statistic has been debunked by the Washington Post and the recent experience of Colorado, the website for Everytown for Gun Safety (among other gun control outlets) still promotes the fallacy. |
