Thought for the week
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse.
The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Trulock Chokes understands that sporting clay and five-stand shooting activities require dead-on patterns. So the company has developed chokes specifically designed to help pattern a gun for shooting at those types of targets. The chokes are knurled, extended choke tubes with a stainless-steel finish and are available in a variety of sizes and gauges to fit most shotguns. They come in a close-range choke (Trulock's Cylinder, Skeet 1 or Improved Cylinder), a mid-range choke (Skeet 2 Lite Mod or Modified) and a longer range choke (Improved Modified, Full or Ex Full).

While most commercial 10mm auto loads offer ballistics comparable to the .40 S&W, the new Vital-Shok Trophy Bonded 10mm Auto from Federal Premium restores the cartridge to its intended full power. Accurate, powerful and designed to succeed where other rounds have failed, this new load is the perfect choice for semi-automatic handgun hunters. With a muzzle velocity of 1275 fps, the 180-grain jacketed soft point shoots flat and packs a powerful punch in semi-automatic pistols. With ballistics that fall between those of the .357 Magnum and .41 Magnum, the load gives hunters the power to take down deer, bears or hogs.

The pot calling the kettle black
David A. Lombardo
Harvey, Illinois, is like roaches in the cabinet under your kitchen sink. When they appear they make you want to throw up. You quickly do something to solve the problem; they disappear only to resurface another day. Now to be clear, I'm not talking about the residents of Harvey, though the village certainly has more than its share of socially deviant miscreants. I'm talking about the "pillars of the community": the mayor, the city fathers, the police and any other municipal agency with a hand to collect bribes or pull a trigger.
Harvey has the distinguished record of the highest violent crime rate in the metropolitan Chicago area at 17 violent crime reports per 1,000 residents. While we like to think of Chicago as the crime capital, it only gets 10.0 violent crime reports per 1,000 people. Of course Detroit tops the nation's list at 142.8, but then maybe that's why Chicago is known as The Second City. Which brings me to the point.
Harvey Mayor Eric Kellogg issued a cease-and-desist Thursday morning for the Harvey gun range saying "...residents complained about bullet casings landing in their yards and even in their homes." One can only wonder what secret military weapon was being fired at the range that would result in spent casings ejecting over 600 yards off the property.
During an NBC Channel 5 report, residents blamed the range for stray bullets that have penetrated or landed near their homes and in backyards while children are playing. Oddly, some of those homes aren't even in proximity to the actual range.
John Howard, operator of the USI Bureau Outdoor Shooting Range, disputes those claims, citing the physics of guns-you know, that inconvenient truth thing raising its ugly head again. In the interest of full disclosure, John Howard is a friend, but the statistics are third party.
Howard told me in an exclusive interview that the range in fact has passed all city inspections and that basic ballistics doesn't support the claims. "This isn't what anyone would consider a low crime area," Howard told me.
In fact gunshots are more common than cricket chirps on a summer eve. The most recent complaint was made by someone who'd made a similar complaint in the past. In that incident, upon examination, the offensive bullet proved to be pristine and had never been fired from a gun. To be fair this time there is a bullet hole in the complainant's trailer, but if it came from the shooting range, it must be the distant cousin of the famous "magic bullet" that killed JFK.
Sitting squarely in the center of this issue is Harvey's rampant crime, much of which appears to come from city employees! In 2008 four Harvey police officers were among 17 people charged in connection with an operation involving drugs, cash and gambling. In an unrelated incident a former Harvey detective was convicted of taking a handgun from police custody and returning it to the family of the felon arrested for having it in exchange for cash.
In a Chicago Tribune article earlier this year, Tribune reporters wrote, "It's a community where officers can keep their guns and badges despite questionable conduct highlighted in scandal after scandal."
And if that's not enough, this is a town were trigger-happy cops shot an innocent man in the back of his leg without cause, threatened to shoot a witness with a camera, then shot the witness's 14-week-old puppy and refused to let anyone help the dog for the more than six hours it took for it to die.
In 2012 the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice wrote in a letter to Mayor Kellogg about the many problems it documented: "Addressing these deficiencies should be HPD's highest priority, as we believe that these lapses, if not corrected, may result in unnecessary injury and/or loss of life to officers or civilians." The feds noted many of Harvey's law enforcement encounters resulted in serious injuries to the subjects, including a fractured spine, broken jaw, fractured bones in the face and neck, head injuries, a dislocated shoulder, facial nerve damage and broken teeth.
This past week Sandra Alvarado, a top aide, spokeswoman and Mayor Kellogg's girlfriend who abruptly quit her job, has gone on record saying Harvey officials run a dangerous organization that routinely ignores illegal acts. "Where can individuals that are elected, appointed or hired to serve the public behave lawlessly? In the City of Harvey, that's where. City officials are aware of illegal and immoral acts and do absolutely nothing about it," Alvarado wrote.
With the eyes of Cook County and the world glaring once again at Kellogg and the Harvey officials, doesn't it seem a tad bit convenient that a magic bullet at a gun range largely used by law enforcement would bump all that out of the headlines and allow Mayor Kellogg to go on television touting his positive action over such a great threat to the citizens of Harvey? If you ask me, it's time to order one really big can of roach spray.

Proposed Chicago gun store ordinance
is slap in the face
The good news is Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has accepted the fact that Chicago has to allow gun stores; the bad news is he's bent on making it more trouble than it's worth. Emanuel's proposed gun store ordinance requires all gun dealers within city limits to videotape firearm sales. "Now that we're required to allow gun sales within the city limits, we do it in a way that does not undermine our public safety goals," he is quoted in the Chicago Tribune. Supporters of the ordinance say that it could be instrumental in dampening Chicago's crime rates, but an ABC7 report found 40 percent of all guns involved in crimes from 2009 to 2013 were illegally purchased. Also included is a 72-hour waiting period for handgun purchases and 24 hours for long guns, which is Illinois state law. Since store records would be subject to quarterly audits, gun owners are concerned that the ordinance will be a de facto gun registry replacing the one that was abolished last September. Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard Pearson added that other restrictions proposed would also limit buyers to one gun a month, quarterly audits and "reasonable" police inspections.

NSSF issues statement on 'Operation Choke Point'
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) issued a statement saying it has been investigating the possible role of the federal government in influencing banks in their lending and business banking relationship decisions regarding companies in our industry. "We have heard from several industry members that they had banking relationships terminated by their lending institutions," it said. "We respect the right of financial institutions to make business decisions based on objective criteria. It is unacceptable, however, to discriminate against businesses simply because they are engaged in the lawful commerce of firearms, an activity protected by the Second Amendment." NSSF staff has met with members of the House Financial Services Committee and members of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee concerning several documents that have surfaced from the FDIC labeling companies in the firearms and ammunition industry as "high risk." NSSF has been working with U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) and expects that he will offer an amendment to the FY15 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill, which would prevent federal funds from being used as part of "Operation Choke Point" or in any effort targeting companies involved in lawful commerce in firearms.

Explosion at Olin Brass plant, two injured
The Olin Brass plant in East Alton, Illinois, is reported to have had a major explosion in which at least two employees were injured. According to KTVI, OSHA is investigating the explosion, which occurred in one of the site's casting units. Olin Brass produces brass sheets for a large range of industries, including ammunition, but does not store gunpowder near the plant. The nearby Olin Corporation's Winchester Division, which manufactures ammunition, does. In February a destructive fire broke out at the Winchester Division plant and consumed a carpenter's shop, nearly igniting a number of propane cylinders nearby. Olin Brass spokesperson Ann Pipkin said that the plant has an in-house team of 30 firefighters and medical personnel, which responded to the incident along with firefighters from the East Alton Fire Department. Two employees were injured by the blast and transported to local hospitals. One worker has already been treated and released, while another was airlifted to Mercy Hospital's burn unit in Creve Coeur. That worker's condition has not been announced.

Designs for 3D-printable AR-15
bullpup lower released
Roughly one year ago OutdoorHub reported on a design for a 3D-printed hybrid AR-15/FN P90 lower receiver known as the Charon. Recently the amateur firearms designer behind the Charon released the blueprints for a unique lower that is rapidly drawing attention in the gun community. "This is an AR-15 based bullpup. It is highly experimental," wrote its creator, who is known interchangeably as WarFairy and Shanrilivan. Naming the new lower after the Hindu deity Hanuman, he announced the release of the lower on Reddit last week. The files necessary to print the Hanuman are available at defcad.com, a website for designers and hobbyists created by 3D-printing pioneer Cody Wilson. "After entirely too long of a development cycle, I give you the Hanuman AR-15 Bullpup," WarFairy/Shanrilivan wrote in a Reddit thread. "It is very much a prototype, lacking a safety and adjustable LOP (outside of interchangeable butt pads), but should work without issue." The designer noted that the current version of the Hanuman was made to test for ergonomics and general functionality. He expects that later versions will include a safety. As it is now the Hanuman lower requires a bufferless upper receiver to function, such as the ARAK-21, Rock River Arms PDS Carbine, or a normal upper with a CMMG-style .22 LR conversion.
