A Government Run Amok
David A. Lombardo
Under normal circumstances Bunkerville, Nevada, rancher Cliven Bundy wouldn't even be a blip on the political radar. The fact of the matter is Bundy is grazing his cattle on federal land, and he owes the government a lot of back rent. Bottom line, he should pay up like his neighbors, but that's under normal circumstances.
There is a fundamental issue underlying Bundy's point that ranchers have been grazing cattle on the land since the cattle drives pushed up from Mexico in the 1860s. He challenges the federal government's claim that it owns the land and he has to pay rent. To his credit there is that troublesome Tenth Amendment thing about "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
Having scoured the Constitution, I can't find the part that says the federal government gets to own all the unclaimed land in the United States. Having said that, the truth is the federal government is a 500-pound gorilla, and John Q. is always going to be on the losing end of pretty much any argument. But again, that too is under normal circumstances. Lately, under this administration, a whole band of 500-pound gorillas have long since lockstep-marched far beyond the boundary of normal circumstances.
I won't rehash all the egregious acts that this president, his minions and his federal agencies have committed over the past few years. Suffice it to say this government is out of control. It sidesteps the Congress with wanton abandon to do whatever it wishes, and that sets the tone for liberal state governments.
In Connecticut citizens have rejected severe gun control measures in an exercise of civil disobedience that has even law enforcement ignoring recent laws. All over the country small acts of civil disobedience have been occurring and nowhere more so than in Bunkerville.
Various militia have shown up to support Bundy and, more importantly, to show the rest of the country that there are those who are ready to stand up to a government that has taken on the appearance of a dictatorship, deploying goon squads to implement policies, some of which even the Congress won't support. Those that would discount the Bunkerville confrontation have their heads in the sand.
It matters not that Bundy is technically in the wrong; he represents the one hot button that this administration doesn't get-John Q. has just about reached his limit of governmental overreach. Whether Bundy is right or wrong, deploying federal SWAT teams to take out a rancher whose crime is grazing cattle and not paying rent is simply outrageous. But outrageous best describes pretty much everything this administration has been up to for the past few years: drones, surveillance systems, the chronic drum beat to disarm all law-abiding citizens, kowtowing to Muslim extremists and a rash of other things the average American sees as anti-American.
What began as a burr under John Q's saddle has grown to widespread terminal cancer. With tensions at their highest since the Civil War, it's not going to take a very big spark to set off a runaway forest fire, and that's no bull...or perhaps it is.
The good news is science tells us that periodically a good forest fire cleanses the land and allows for stronger, better renewed growth. Or, to put it more bluntly, as Thomas Jefferson wrote, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

A real gun safety program
doesn't come from Bloomberg
In a recent editorial, Steve Sanetti, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), wrote about Michael Bloomberg's newest anti-Second Amendment vehicle. "Effective firearm safety efforts don't involve divisive tactics, sanctimonious rhetoric and videos designed to frighten parents away from responsible firearm ownership," Sanetti said. "Everytown for Gun Safety, the new umbrella group for Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Shannon Watts' Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, will use an estimated $50 million [see following article] of Bloomberg's funds to pursue legislation that will do little to actually enhance firearm safety but instead would create a host of additional barriers to gun ownership by law-abiding Americans." Sanetti points out NSSF's safety programs, and those of other organizations, have helped drive down firearms accidents to historic low levels, decreasing by 22 percent in the last 10 years.
Less than 1 percent of all fatal accidents in the U.S. involve a firearm. "Real gun safety looks like this: 70 million gun locks included with new firearms in the last 15 years; 36 million free firearm safety kits that include a gun lock distributed in communities through NSSF's Project ChildSafe program, in partnership with 15,000 law enforcement departments; and 3.6 million requests for firearm safety materials fulfilled by NSSF in 2013 alone."

Bloomberg vows to spend $50M to push gun control
Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will spend $50 million this year to build a nationwide grassroots network on gun control in a direct challenge to the National Rifle Association, The New York Times reported. The new lobbying group, called Everytown for Gun Safety, will encompass other gun control groups funded by Bloomberg, Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, the report said. Bloomberg told the Times the strategy will focus on expanding the background check system for gun buyers at the state and national levels. He made nearly $14 million in federal campaign contributions for gun-control candidates in the 2012 elections. "They say, 'We don't care. We're going to go after you,'" he said of the NRA. "'If you don't vote with us we're going to go after your kids and your grandkids and your great-grandkids. And we're never going to stop.'" Bloomberg's group will target 15 states, including places where gun control laws have been implemented recently, and parts of the country seen as gun-friendly like Texas, Montana and Indiana, the Times reported. Bloomberg said the organization will focus on women, especially mothers. "You've got to work at it piece by piece," he said. "One mom and another mom. You've got to wear them down until they finally say, 'Enough.'"

Should We Be Afraid of the 3D Printed Gun?
In a Popular Mechanics article, Eric Scott Pfeiffer takes a hard look at 3D-printing of plastic guns. Writing about The Liberator, which became the world's first 3D-printed gun on May 5, 2013, Pfeiffer noted that a year later the technology hasn't taken the world by storm. "Now that a year has passed, it's time to ask just how broadly the gun has transformed society. The answer is, not much.
With 3D printing being used to produce everything from car parts to living tissue, it was inevitable that the technology would be used to produce a handgun. Rather large and awkward, the Liberator hasn't taken the firearms world by storm. Still, people are worried that 3D printing will be used to produce undetectable plastic guns, and that criminals and terrorists will now be able to make their own firearms without anyone else knowing. Those concerns may be overblown. However, The Liberator does say a lot about the future-and maybe even the present-of technology." Pfeiffer points out that despite what the anti-Second Amendment folks would have you believe, The Liberator can be identified at security checkpoints because it contains a chunk of metal; in fact, that component's only function is to set off metal detectors. This is required by a federal statute, renewed late last year, which bans guns that are undetectable. Beyond that, the ammunition itself contains metal.

Sig Sauer sues BATFE
for calling its muzzle brake a gun silencer
Gun maker Sig Sauer has filed a civil suit against the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, claiming the federal agency wrongfully classified a "muzzle brake" Sig designed to reduce recoil as an item "intended only for use" when making a silencer. Sig claims that gun silencers are "subject to burdensome legal requirements," and by calling its muzzle brake a part for a silencer, the federal agency is subjecting it to "economic injury." "If classified as a silencer, no market exists for the subject device given that it will not silence, muffle, or diminish the report of a firearm and yet it would still be subject to the burdensome requirements set forth above as if it really is a silencer." ATF Director B. Todd Jones is named as defendant in Sig's lawsuit and has 21 days, after being served, to respond to the civil action, dated April 7. Sig claims its muzzle brake "effectively reduces recoil and muzzle rise when a shot is discharged," which would not subject it to regulation under the federal Gun Control Act. "Accordingly, it will be highly marketable to consumers and will generate profit," according to the suit. If classified as a silencer or muffler, "no market would exist for the device," because consumers would not subject themselves to the "required burdens" associated with silencers to buy a device that doesn't perform as a silencer, Sig claims.
