Thought for the week

I hope we have once again reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited. There's a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: as government expands, liberty contracts.

HatsanUSA is offering its new AT-P1 air pistol with pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) power system that uses a 50cc air cylinder with 200 bar fill (3000PSI) to propel high-density lead pellets to velocities as high as 870 fps. And because the AT-P1 is designed to shoot heavier pellets than airgun manufacturers that test their products using alloy aluminum pellets, it will provide shooters with greater accuracy and more energy upon impact when using high-density pellets. The side-lever-action pistol is available in .177cal (870fps), .22cal (780fps), and .25cal (710fps). It is fitted with a dovetail grooved receiver for both 11mm and 22mm scope mounts and micro-adjustable rear and front sights, both with TRUGLO fiber optics. MSRP: $630.

JP Enterprises debuts rimfire conversion for multiple models. Having already built a quality .22 LR upper for years, JP is now proud to announce the debut of the new and improved JP-22R action that opens up every small-frame JP platform (JP-15, CTR-02, SCR-11 and PSC-11) for a .22 LR conversion. No "me too" .22, the JP-22R series is designed to meet standards that flimsy plastic or cheaply-assembled conversions simply can't. By incorporating the exact same components and build quality of a centerfire JP, shooters can now have a .22 upper assembly or complete rifle that matches the quality of their primary rifles.

I'm voting Democratic in November

David A. Lombardo

Well, I have to admit it: I'm thinking of voting Democratic in the upcoming election. I would have never thought I'd do such a thing until the truth struck me right between the eyes. There they were, the morning after the primary: Governor Pat Quinn, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Mayor Rahm Emanuel eating breakfast at Billy Goat Tavern. My God, they're just like me; they're regular guys eating eggs, sausage and hash browns. They're just your everyday, common working stiffs dedicated to helping the rest of us everyday, common working stiffs.

Well, you know, except for the fact that Rahm Emanuel's net worth is about $14 million, Dick Durbin's is reported as $1.25 million, and Quinn, who won't release his figures, is squeaking by on his modest $155,000-plus salary with a free mansion, aircraft and car with driver.

Amazing what liberals will do for a photo op, but then isn't that par for the disingenuous liberal mentality. If you say it loud enough, often enough, it becomes reality-we're just working stiffs, you know, blue collar guys, trying to look out for other working stiffs. While munching his working class breakfast, Quinn excoriated Rauner for having a scheduled lunch at Chicago's upscale Union League.

Of course Quinn wants to deflect any spotlight on him. He's the CEO of Illinois. You know, Illinois-only one of two states in which unemployment rose last year, where the current jobless rate is America's second-worst, a state whose creditworthiness is dead-last nationwide with debts totaling some $200 billion.

Quinn, the governor who demanded a 67 percent income tax increase in a state that has the third-highest home foreclosure rate in the country, "up" from being the fifth-worst the year before. This is the guy who wants to raise the minimum wage to $10 per hour, the highest in the nation, forcing yet more business to move out of state, and for what? To let inflation, like water seeking its own level, simply rise to gobble up the increase?

So the governor who is, at an ever-increasing rate, driving businesses out of state while doing his best to bankrupt individual taxpayers tries to deflect attention away from himself and his failed policies by saying entrepreneur Bruce Rauner owns nine homes and has a net worth larger than most third-world countries.

Quinn, who-unlike the Captain of the Titanic-keeps turning the ship around and aiming for the iceberg, is suggesting the last thing Illinois needs is someone who is ridiculously successful as a chief executive. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense if your goal is to beat Detroit as the poorest, most dangerous, most dysfunctional place in the United States.

I've made no bones about it; I didn't care for Rauner. I liked Dan Rutherford, and I would have been okay with Kirk Dillard, both established Second Amendment supporters. I don't know what Rauner will do regarding the Second Amendment, and I don't like the fact he's way too buddy-buddy with the Democrats, but Rauner is who we've got. So despite my having remarked that a squirrel would be better than Pat Quinn as governor, Rauner ain't no squirrel.

My reservations aside, Rauner is a successful businessman and gets what needs to be done in Illinois to keep businesses here, create jobs and turn the economic tide back in favor of a good economy. But with such poor turnout for the primary, the real problem is whether or not conservatives are smart enough to get out the vote come November. I'm not so sure: as H. L. Mencken wrote, "No one has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people."

This week David and Gretchen will be interviewing John Anthony, 75th District Illinois State Representative, for an overview of this week's primary election.

All that and more, this Sunday evening from 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. on AM560 THE ANSWER.

Proposed Surgeon General

is virulent anti-Second Amendment

The Surgeon General is to provide the American public with information related to their health and direct much of the federal government's public health efforts. In order for these roles to be carried out effectively, the public must trust that the Surgeon General's actions are based on empirical and scientific evidence, rather than political or ideological motives. In this regard Dr. Murthy's record of political activism in support of radical gun control measures raises significant concerns about his ability to objectively examine issues pertinent to America's 100 million firearm owners and the likelihood he would use the office of Surgeon General to further his preexisting campaign against gun ownership. Vivek Murthy agrees with President Barack Obama, Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Senator Dianne Feinstein's radical anti-gun agenda.  Dr. Murthy has advocated on many occasions for the banning of lawfully-owned firearms and even worse-using tax dollars for the federal government to buy them back.  Furthermore Dr. Murthy proposed stripping the vital privacy protections for gun owners in the "Affordable Care Act" so that doctors and insurance companies can keep information on lawful gun owners. The NRA urges you to call your U.S. Senator at (202) 224-3121 to oppose the confirmation of Vivek Murthy for Surgeon General.

Stutzman reciprocity bill

New York and Connecticut have gone into full confiscation mode: New York City is sending out letters to registered gun owners demanding that they relinquish guns holding more than seven rounds. In Connecticut the Hartford Courant is insisting that the state imprison up to 300,000 gun owners who have not complied with the most recent registration demands. Gun Owners of America is working with litigators to try to challenge states such as these in court, in the face of a judiciary which is increasingly packed by Obama with anti-gun judges. But one thing we can do to force states like New York and Connecticut to recognize the Constitution is to pass reciprocity legislation like H.R. 578, which has been introduced by Congressman Marlin Stutzman in the House and currently has 38 cosponsors. It would compel states like New York and Connecticut to "allow" concealed carry holders from other states to walk their streets without being compelled to submit their names to state gun registries. The Cornyn-Thune Senate bill, like H.R. 578, recognizes constitutional carry states and is the version that garnered a supermajority of 57 votes in the Senate just last year. What is needed now is to increase H.R. 578's current 38 cosponsors. [Source: Gun Owners of America]

Taxpayer-funded search for data

to support anti-gun views

In a March 12th blog, the National Shooting Sports Foundation's Larry Keane noted that President Obama recently earmarked $10 million to the Centers for Disease Control for research that will support gun control. More instructive and cost-efficient than commissioning a raft of new studies are the real-life experiences of the last two decades. Gun-related violence has plummeted, and at the same time, rates of firearm ownership are increasing. According to various studies, "firearm-related murder and non-negligent homicide" has decreased 50 percent since 1993.

Anti-gun politicians simply do not want to accept the undeniable premise that more law-abiding citizens exercising their Constitutional rights actually makes our communities safer. When would-be criminals and violent offenders have reason to believe that that their victim has the capability to protect themselves with a firearm, they are less likely to commit violent crimes. That is not just common sense; it was also a major finding of the first CDC study to be published after Obama resumed funding, to the chagrin of anti-gun zealots who expected otherwise. That same study also found that defensive uses of firearms are common and that accidents and mass shootings account for a small percentage of total gun deaths-not exactly the type of damning findings that many gun-control supporters were expecting.  So they will keep looking until they find what they are looking for or can at least interpret the results to support their agenda. Chicago pro-gun billboard draws criticism

A billboard on Interstate 55 in Chicago has drawn the ire of gun control groups. It depicts a baseball glove, apple pie and a semiautomatic rifle; an American flag is displayed with the words "Pure American" and "2A" written next to it.

Apparently the billboard is paid for by Texas-based Slide Fire. Reverend Michael Pfleger, the nut-job priest who's never seen a television camera he didn't want to stand before, told Chicago's ABC7, "I think there is this great move by manufactures, NRA, and others to make guns part of America's wardrobe; this is not what we define America by." Pfleger is pulling out the stops to have the sign taken down as is activist group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Thus far neither appears to have gotten any traction with Lamar, the company that owns the billboard. "We feel like it's a legal product, and the advertiser has a First Amendment right to try to sell this product," said Hal Kilshaw, Lamar's vice president of governmental relations. "If a group wanted to run a billboard that says, 'We think semi-automatic rifles should be banned,' we would run that." Slide Fire is perhaps best known for their patented "slide stock" design, which allows certain semiautomatic rifle platforms to fire rapidly, a practice referred to as "bump firing" by gun enthusiasts.
