Editorial

Things to be thankful for in 2013

David A. Lombardo

Anyone who has ever listened to On Target Radio or subscribes to On Target Newsletter knows of my editorial/Rant of the Week. Over the past year I have taken countless people and organizations to task, to the point where one friend has labeled me a curmudgeon. Admittedly, I took it as a compliment, but on Christmas Eve, sitting before the fireplace, drinking a 30-year-old Glenfiddich and puffing on a Monte Cristo White, I pondered my life in general and 2013 specifically. I have much more to be thankful for than to complain about.

Having a radio show is a hoot, and I have to thank WIND's Mike Sakoff, who spent the better part of a year helping me get On Target Radio on the air. A tip of the hat also goes to George Hoffmann, our engineer, who offers sage advice, generally does his best to prevent me from taking all this too seriously and who agrees with me that there is no problem so complex that the proper application of high explosives can't resolve it.

Writing the editorial is simply fun; reading it on the air, even more so. It gives me the opportunity to do the sort of writing I most enjoy. I can tilt windmills on the egregious topic du jour while savoring a plethora of words I might choose to make my point and simultaneously putting a smile on the faces of those who behold it. It never fails to draw a couple dozen email responses, most very supportive and a few, shall we say, less than affectionate?

What makes it most enjoyable is that it's written by my alter ego. I am by nature far from being a curmudgeon; I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Aquarian. And so, as Father Time takes one last swing at 2013 with his scythe, I will tell you the good things I see when I look back on 2013.

I love Chicago. I know I complain about the winters, the politics, the crime and all the rest of the things not to like, but I have lived and worked all over the world, and the simple truth is there's no city anywhere like Chicago. I am always struck by how many rivers and forests Chicago has to compliment one of the greatest lakefronts in the world. The skyline of Chicago is stunning, the restaurants amazing and the entertainment profuse. And despite the many criticisms I've had for Mayor Emanuel, and his terrible gun control philosophy, I will admit he has also done a lot of good for the city.

I have a near reverence for the Illinois State Rifle Association and all they do day-to-day to protect our gun rights in a state that is as about as unfriendly to the Second Amendment as you can get. Richard Pearson, the ISRA's executive director, and his three lobbyists literally fight the good fight in Springfield every day. There would not be concealed carry in Illinois were it not for them. Don Moran, the organization's president, keeps the ISRA on course, and Vic Quillici, its general counsel, is a sharpshooter who specializes in picking off bad laws through carefully selected law suits.

I thank the National Rifle Association for having the savvy and muscle to protect our Second Amendment rights in the nation's capital and for supporting their lobbyist, Todd Vandermyde, here in Illinois, who was also key in securing concealed carry.

I thank our thousands of On Target Radio listeners and On Target Newsletter subscribers. I also have a special thanks for Larry Pelcher of Pelcher's Shooter's Supply and the Illinois State Rifle Assocation who have backed On Target Radio since its inception. Their unswerving support is appreciated far more than I can express.

I thank my old friend Tim Dalan who did so much for both On Target Radio and SAFER USA, and I wish him well now that he's out on his own. Similarly I am thankful for all of my SAFER USA instructors, the Donaldsons, Ed Janka and all the rest, who spend far more time than I can hope to compensate them for, making our programs the best they can be.

I thank Ed Ronkowsi who, despite saying he'd get me out of jail even if it takes a hundred years-could we shave that down a little bit, Ed?-has spent countless hours perfecting SAFER USA's legal presentations, counseling me every time I get some hair-brained idea and finding interesting guests for the show; who has been a great friend; and, despite his ability to talk us into a hard break, who is always worth having on the show.

And last but most assuredly not least, I thank Gretchen who peeked into my world about a year ago, got sucked in, and who teaches for me, is my editor, On Target Radio's co-host, my muse and my best friend, despite her ridiculous attempts to get me to eat healthy and exercise. Gretchen, dead green leafy stuff in a bowl is never going to trump ice cream; give it up.

Florida court: guns okay on campus

Any pro-personal-protection supporter knows that gun free zones are nothing more than an open invitation to a mass shooting. If experience with mass murderers has taught us anything, it is that they are cowards and will pass potential targets where people are allowed to carry a concealed weapon to find one that is a Gun Free Zone. Alexandria Lainez, a 24-year-old University of North Florida student and mother of a young child, takes personal protection seriously and sued the university over the right to carry a concealed firearm. She has held a Florida concealed weapons permit for three years. She was joined in the case by Florida Carry, Inc, Specifically she sued to be allowed to keep her firearm in her vehicle while on campus. A Florida appeals court ruled that colleges can't ban students from doing so. In a December 13th Investor's Business Daily article, Scott Makar, one of the court's judges, is quoted: "If universities can regulate away a Second Amendment right, why not a First Amendment one? Or one protected by the Fourth or Fifth Amendment? The point is rhetorical, but nonetheless meaningful because campus authority unchecked can go astray of constitutional norms."

Americans say gun show

background checks not necessary

Support for so-called universal background checks at gun shows is not what gun control proponents would like the general public to believe, according to the results of a national scientific poll of more than 1,200 Americans conducted in November by McKeon & Associates and released by NSSF. After being informed that the vast majority of firearms sales at these shows are transacted by licensed retailers that already conduct such checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) as required by federal law, only 40 percent of respondents said that extension of "universal background checks" to private transactions at gun shows are necessary. The poll results stand in contrast to the vague claim often reported in the media and attributed to gun control proponents without important contextual detail that 90 percent of Americans surveyed support "universal background checks." The Americans polled also said by a combined 74 percent margin that conducting background checks against an incomplete database was not effective at all or not very effective while 54 percent said that requiring background checks for transferring guns between friends and family members was not at effective at all or not very effective in reducing violent crime. Say it ain't so, Joe. You actually got it right?

Vice President Joe Biden, known for shooting from the lip and never scoring points, is surfing near the edge of reality in his recent gun-related announcement. Biden announced a $100 million commitment to bolster the nation's mental health system in an effort to ward off future mass shootings. In looking back over such recent events, the one thing that stands out is the well-known mental illness of the murderers in Newtown, Aurora, Virginia Tech and the Navy Yard. In none of those cases was the shooter's mental illness dealt with appropriately when the system had the chance. According to Biden the allocated funds will go to improving access to mental health services for those who need them. A spokesman for the National Shooting Sports Foundation said policymakers "would be better off addressing the root cause of violent outbursts, namely mentally unstable individuals slipping through the cracks of a leaky mental health system, than by assigning blame to firearms used safely by millions of law abiding individuals every day. We have long advocated for fixing the federal background check database instead of simply expanding a broken system."

Trial date set for NSSF suit against Colorado gun laws

A March 31 trial date has been set to hear arguments in a federal lawsuit challenging Gov. Hickenlooper's strict gun-control measures (HB 1224 and HB 1229) that were passed and signed into law earlier this year. At the time of filing, the National Shooting Sports Foundation joined with 54 county sheriffs, Magpul Industries, the Colorado Outfitters Association, several firearms retailers, disabled individuals and other parties in the suit which was brought before the United States District Court for the District of Colorado in what is a broad-based challenge to Colorado's recently enacted gun-control laws. In a public effort to set a new tone for the upcoming election year in his state, Hickenlooper recently held a press conference saying he seeks more bi-partisanship. Democrat Hickenlooper is running for re-election next November. With the successful recall this summer of the State Senate president and leading gun-control proponent in the senate, opposition from most of the county sheriffs to enforcing the new laws, and the prospect of news coverage of a major court case challenging his gun-control agenda, we can understand why he may feel a bit nervous.
