Caldwell has introduced its Brass Trap, designed to catch the brass in most shooting environments, styles and guns. It's designed to be set on a bench and catch rifle brass or placed on tripod to catch all of your pistol brass. The mesh bag design allows wind through so it stays put no matter what. When you are done shooting, unzip the zipper for quick brass removal and break it down to store in your range bag.

Thought for the week

If I had time and anything like your ability to study war, I think I should concentrate almost entirely on the actualities of war - the effects of tiredness, hunger, fear, lack of sleep, weather...

The principles of strategy and tactics, and the logistics of war, are really absurdly simple: It is the actualities that make war so complicated and so difficult, and are usually so neglected by historians

Gun control ain't dead but it has a good case of the flu

David A. Lombardo

Despite the most recent spate of whack-jobs killing innocent people, the subject of introducing more gun control legislation is, for the most part, on a very low simmer. Other than Obama, who continues to preach the need for disarming law-abiding citizens, most legislators have heard the siren call of the public's increasing interest in punishing those who continue to espouse anti-personal-protection ideology. This trend was most recently exhibited by that worthy endeavor played out in Colorado, where two Democratic state senators, including their Senate's president, lost recalls and were replaced by pro-Second-Amendment Republicans. And this occurred in heavily Democratic districts.

Oh, sure, the Congress' nutball Senators Feinstein and Durbin hawked disarming everyone on the planet, but it mostly fell on deaf ears. All the more so considering they trumpeted the need to ban those horrible assault weapons after Aaron Alexis shot up the Navy Yard in Washington. The news outlets picked up the cries for banning assault weapons again until it turned out the only assault weapon involved was carried by the police: Alexis used a shotgun. There's nothing more enjoyable than watching the network news talking heads apologizing for making things up and getting caught in the act.

In one of the great understatements of situational awareness, Chuck Hagel, the Secretary of Defense, said in a Pentagon news conference, "When you go back in hindsight and look at all this, there were some red flags, of course there were."

Well, duh. The Rhode Island police warned the U.S. Navy over a month ago that Alexis was hallucinating and hearing voices. He told police that he was being threatened by unseen people and feared that "some sort of microwave machine was penetrating his body." Navy security officials called the report "routine" and said Alexis was not a threat to the installation or to himself. Apparently they were comparing Alexis' behavior to that of the members of Congress, for whom hallucinating and hearing non-existent voices of support is considered normal, if not desirable, behavior.

But aside from that little quirk in Alexis' personality, he had a long history of documented mental illness, an extensive disciplinary record while serving on active duty in the Navy-you know, the same Navy that runs the Navy Yard-and three arrests over the past decade, two of them for gun-related incidents.

All that adds up, at least for the time being, to an impetus for harsher background checks, but that has also dropped off the fantail. Rep. Steny Hoyer commented at a politico breakfast that the recall vote in Colorado "does not bode well for asking people to vote for legislation similar to that which went down in the Senate just a few months ago."

Let's be honest: if the entire Federal government, including the Navy, couldn't figure out a nutcase like Alexis should have had his credentials pulled for the Navy Yard, what are they going to do better for civilian background checks?

Right, absolutely nothing.

NRA opposes Obama's NFA background check proposal

Late last month the White House announced a "common sense executive action to keep the most dangerous firearms out of the wrong hands." It said prohibited persons are able to avoid background checks on machine guns and other classes of firearms heavily regulated under the National Firearms Act by registering those firearms to trusts or corporations; BATFE would be issuing proposed regulation to close the loophole and require "individuals associated with trusts or corporations that acquire these types of weapons to undergo background checks, just as these individuals would if the weapons were registered to them individually." According to the NRA the proposed rule now posted on BATFE's website is "hardly common sense and instead displays the Obama administration's typical knee-jerk anti-gun bias and instinct to further burden and discourage lawful gun ownership."

California poised to pass massive gun control bill

Despite strong and increasing public support of the right to keep and bear arms, California legislators are bent on disarming the state's law abiding gun owners. This past week the California legislature passed one of the toughest gun control laws in the United States, including severe semi-auto gun restrictions and outright bans along with a state gun registration requirement. The bill bans any semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine, including something as basic as a .22 caliber rifle with a 10-round magazine; any semi-auto rifle with a detachable magazine will be illegal. Also included in the bill is a ban on adapters to convert magazines to high-capacity, a requirement for a potential firearm purchaser to have safety certification to buy any firearm and a requirement for firearm owners to maintain records of every firearm. The bill awaits the governor's signature. "We must demand every one of our State Governors do not sign anymore anti-gun proposals into laws. They are the last defense for our states and must protect our Second Amendment rights along with the interest of their state's citizens," Alan Gottlieb, chairman, Citizens For The Right To Keep And Bear Arms, said. SHOT Show good news and bad

In an exclusive interview with SHOT show planners, On Target Newsletter was told the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) is committed to the Sands Expo & Convention Center for at least two more years. The issue attendees have with the venue is its poor layout for a show as large as the SHOT Show (January 14-17, 2014). The labyrinth of rooms on multiple floors makes navigating the massive show very difficult. The other major problem with the venue is the lack of Wi-Fi coverage. Telephone calls, texting and email have been all but non-existent and having your own portable Wi-Fi signal generator was mostly ineffective as a result of the facility's signal-blocking structure. The good news is that the Sands recently added a $1.6 million wireless LAN that will deliver seamless mobility to the 2.2 million-sq.-ft. facilities. NSSF is still negotiating the Wi-Fi portion of the contract, so it is unclear at this time whether the Wi-Fi service will be free or require a fee.

SCI attends White House conference

on wildlife trafficking

The Safari Club International Foundation (SCI Foundation) leadership participated in a White House conference on international wildlife trafficking and poaching in Washington, D.C. "SCI Foundation was extremely thankful for the opportunity to be invited to today's briefing on Executive Order (E.O. 13648). We are appreciative that the sustainability of wildlife is not just a priority for the hunter-conservationist anymore," said SCI Foundation President Joe Hosmer. Former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell addressed the audience on the framework of the Executive Order to curtail the negative impact illegal trade has on wildlife worldwide. Poaching has been and continues to be one of the strongest forces working against regulated sustainable-use of wildlife throughout Africa. To continue the fight against poachers, SCI Foundation recently made a significant donation of $35,000 to the Frankfurt Zoological Society in North Luangwa Ecosystem to support anti-poaching patrols in Zambia. "SCI Foundation will remain poised to assist and advise how hunter-conservationists, who are already on the ground in Africa, will be the strongest advocates for curtailing poaching and illicit trade in wildlife," concluded Hosmer.
