Editorial: Liberalism - A mental disorder

David A. Lombardo

I have a good friend who believes liberalism is a mental disorder. I've always laughed when he's said it but lately I've come to realize he's right and I'll give you proof.

Stories that have recently been reported in USA Today, hardly a house organ for the conservative movement, include two six year old Maryland students who were suspended for using their fingers as imaginary guns. Then there was the 7 year old Baltimore boy who was suspended from school for nibbling a Pop Tart into the shape of a gun. And you thought they were full of beans when they said sugar kills.

In Pennsylvania a five year old was suspended from kindergarten for wielding a Hello Kitty toy gun that makes soap bubbles. She was suspended for, I kid you not, "making terroristic threats" with the bubble gun. Can anyone explain to me how a kindergartner with a bubble gun equates to a terrorist? The point is, it does to liberals.

Recently I agreed to have a discussion about gun control on a liberal blog. What was I thinking? I must have had one Pop Tart too many myself. I didn't expect most of them to have a particularly good grasp of firearms but I was actually shocked at what I found. There was no attempt at intelligent discussion; they would extract a sentence I'd written, take it completely out of context and publish such things as I want to kill police officers, overthrow the government and don't care how many children get killed. I'm not sure if even a quick 220 volts to the brain would purge those demons.

Two weeks ago I watched the entire eight hour debacle of the Illinois House debating concealed carry. If anyone has any doubt whatsoever about liberalism being a mental disease, go watch that eight hours. I just kept mumbling, "We're paying them for this?"

What struck me most was the farcical discussion of each individual amendment. With few exceptions, the liberal sponsor of any given amendment was unable to explain the amendment at all, when questioned. And when they did try to answer a question they had no understanding of the subject of their own amendment.

In what has to be the most ironic amendment with unintended consequences, it is proposed that concealed carry not be allowed on public transportation. Individuals carrying a concealed weapon would have to stop at the El platform, take out their gun, unload it, put it in a box, then board the train. They would then reverse the process at their destination. It effectively creates the country's first Gun Saturated Zones with 20 or 30 people fiddling with firearms on every El platform. It'll make public transportation terminals the safest places in the city. People will probably start having weddings, birthday parties and picnics on El platforms.

When a pro-gun amendment finally came up, the liberals badgered the sponsor with questions that, for the most part, were irrelevant or worse, had no bearing on the subject. They couldn't wrap their brains around the meaning of the most basic concepts.

How can anyone come to any conclusion other than liberals really do have a mental disorder? The only thing that liberals really care about is being reelected which is increasingly followed by being incarcerated. So here's a great idea for combating liberalism here in Illinois.

Liberals are feeling secure with a majority in both houses so let's shake up their world. I'm asking each of you to download half a dozen FOID card applications and talk your friends into applying for a FOID card. Let's spread the idea on Facebook and other forms of social media.

Can you imagine the core meltdown the liberals will have if the number of FOID card applications quadruples over the next couple of months particularly if they're in liberal stronghold Cook County? It's time to stand up and be counted, literally - Let's show liberals there are plenty of gun owners in Illinois and we vote!

Animal rights activist hired
hit man to kill fur-wearer

Speaking of liberal whack-jobs, a judge recently released an animal-rights activist accused of soliciting a hit man to kill someone wearing fur. U.S. District Judge Patricia Gaughan freed Meredith Lowell of Cleveland Heights based on a psychological report that found her mentally incompetent to stand trial and not capable of being rehabilitated to competency. Lowell, 28, is being held at the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, which specializes in mental health services for female inmates. Her arrest came after the FBI received a tip that someone on Facebook wanted to pay an assassin to kill someone wearing fur near the Coventry branch of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library. The Facebook user, later identified as Lowell, said she wanted to be present during the killing and planned to hand out anti-fur industry literature at the scene of the crime. An FBI agent, posing as a hit man, began an online correspondence with Lowell during which she told the FBI agent, "I am paying you to kill one person wearing fur that is 12 or older but hopefully at least 14 years, however 12 years old or older is fine." One wonders if she'll get a reduced sentence based on her concern for the young.

Flight attendants oppose knives in cabins

Sportsmen will be happy to hear that TSA announced it would allow airline passengers to carry small pocket knives onto passenger planes for the first time since the September 11th. Also included are golf clubs, hockey sticks and plastic whiffle ball bats. The agency will permit knives with retractable blades shorter than 2.4 inches and narrower than inch at the widest point. TSA Administrator John Pistole said the change is to conform to international rules and will take effect April 25th. The agency will still prohibit some knives, including those with locking lades or molded handles, box cutters, and razor blades. Passengers will also be allowed to carry on sticks used to play lacrosse, billiards and hockey, ski poles and as many as two golf clubs. The Flight Attendants Union Coalition expressed outrage at the move. "We are the last line of defense in aviation security and time does not change the fact that we were among the first to die in a war we didn't know we were fighting on September 11, 2001. At great cost, we know better today. There is no excuse for this," the organization said in a press release.

Senator Coburn joins CCRKBA'S Advisory Council

U.S. Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) has joined the National Advisory Council of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. "American gun owners know Tom Coburn as a devoted defender of the Second Amendment, and his addition to our National Advisory Council can only be seen as a considerable asset in our efforts to protect the right to keep and bear arms," CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb said. Sen. Coburn has recently been in the news for raising serious concerns about proposed background check legislation that could establish a de facto gun registration system. "Tom Coburn's ability to recognize these attempted backdoor erosions of gun rights is exactly what makes his addition to our advisory council so important at this moment in history," Gottlieb observed. "He's smart, attentive to details and he is not afraid to ask the tough questions on Capitol Hill. That's the kind of fellow whose advice on Second Amendment issues might easily be considered the gold standard." Prior to serving in the U.S. Senate, Coburn served three terms in the House of Representatives, stepping down in 2001 to fulfill his promise of self-imposed term limits.

Conn. firearm makers talk

about jobs in new TV ads

The management and employees of three firearms manufacturers with operations in Connecticut speak out in separate television commercials that begin airing today on several cable television systems in the state, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation. "The firearms industry has a long history in Connecticut and continues to have a sizeable economic presence and workforce in the Constitution State," says Jake McGuigan, director, government relations, state affairs for NSSF. "Despite these facts, legislation before the General Assembly that would institute an outright ban on the sale of the most popular model of semiautomatic rifle today present the real prospect of decreasing good-paying jobs in our state. Lawmakers need to understand that the underlying issues go deeper than whether a manufacturing exemption would be put in place. The value of our companies' brands and national consumer acceptance of firearms made in a state that bans them within its own borders are serious business issues." The commercials feature employees of Colt Manufacturing of West Hartford, O.F. Mossberg & Sons of North Haven and Stag Arms of New Britain. NSSF produced the ads and is paying for the air time.
