States line up to ban guns

David A. Lombardo

Remind me again how The Messiah doesn't want to take away our guns. Does anyone seriously believe that Pelosi, one of his Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, introduced that bill without his involvement? Or that the flurry of anti-gun articles in the newspapers isn't orchestrated? I mean, they all just decided to start writing anti-gun editorials simultaneously by coincidence? And then there are the states. Following in the footsteps of California, Colorado, Connecticut and Maryland are New Jersey, Illinois, Missouri and Minnesota.

Despite hundreds of gun-rights advocates descending upon New Jersey's Statehouse, it has been reported that the Dems essentially ignored them and ramrodded their agenda through committee for more gun control laws in a state with some of the toughest gun laws on the books. Gun owners call the 23 proposed bills "feel-good" and having nothing to do with gun violence. The proposed laws seek limiting magazine capacity to 10 bullets from 15, the banning of online sales of guns and ammunition, and forbidding gun ownership for anyone on the FBI's terrorist watch list.

New Jersey has had an assault weapons ban in place since 1991, all firearms must be registered, and concealed carry permits are essentially part of a good old boy network and unavailable to the common citizen. Additional laws sought would ban possession of armor-piercing bullets and .50 caliber or greater weapons, mental-health records being turned over to NICS background system and give the authority to law enforcement to seize firearms from anyone a mental health professional designates as a danger to himself or others.

There is only one pro-gun bill that was passed alongside all of the anti-gun bills. It is the one that requires all firearm records be confidential. It is the only issue that would have a negative effect on the anti-gun crowd, many of whom own guns but don't want anyone else to know about them.

In Illinois, the legislature is spooling up to pass comprehensive gun control laws. Illinoisans are urged to attend either the Tuesday, February 19th public hearing in the Capitol (12:00 noon; Room 114 Capitol Building in Springfield) or the Friday, February 22nd hearing in Chicago's Bilandic Building (10:00 a.m.; Room N-600 Bilandic Building).

Missouri Democrats introduced an anti-gun bill which would turn law-abiding firearm owners into criminals. Under the terms of the bill any person who owns an assault weapon or large capacity magazine would have 90 days to turn it in to law enforcement or become subject to felony prosecution. It also would make it unlawful, a class C felony, to manufacture, import, possess, purchase, sell, or transfer an assault weapon or a large capacity magazine.

"These assault weapons have no place in a civilized society except when we have an outside threat and that's what we have the military for," said Rep. Rory Ellinger of University City. "I don't think we have to have all these guns sitting around that countless times have led to terrible disasters. It's generating a panic that has no justification."

Then there's a proposed law in Minnesota which states, "Any person who, on February 1, 2013, legally owns or is in possession of an assault weapon has until September 1, 2013, to either remove it from the state, surrender it to law enforcement for destruction, render it permanently inoperable, or register it as provided by statutes.

Across the country the Dems are lining up and introducing similar bills in their respective state houses and the wording of many is eerily similar. But of course it's all a coincidence because The Messiah respects our right to own firearms.

Guns line up to ban states

In a turning of the tables the firearm and supplies industry have had it with anti-gun governments at the city, state and Federal levels, even if it means lost revenue. Several companies have announced that they will no longer be supplying equipment to hostile governments, police forces or first responders with New York and California as prime targets. So far: LaRue Tactical, Olympic Arms, Templar Custom, York Arms, Barrett Firearms Manufacturing and Cheaper Than Dirt. The latter may earn back its stripes after siding with the anti-gun lobby earlier this year and almost going out of business when the pro-gun group turned off the water. Three companies conspicuously of the list that sell to the New York police department are Glock, Smith & Wesson, and Sig Sauer. I'd hate to have to boycott them but this is a "You're either with us or you're against us" time in history. Smith & Wesson would do wise to remember what happened in 1994 when they sided with Bill Clinton. There are a lot of government sales but most firearms companies bread-and-butter are civilian sales. When we turn off the water the gun manufacturers tend to wither and die on the vine.

NSSF provides activism center

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has initiated a Legislative Action Center to help locate contact information for federal and state legislators, learn about newly introduced firearms legislation and take action by sending a letter or making a phone call. Using the Center, pro-gun advocates sent almost 5,000 letters to legislators this past week and the NSSF is asking everyone to promote it on their homepages and wherever else they see fit. Thousands of firearms owners have been attending local, state and federal hearings in response to the onslaught of proposed gun laws however few people have the luxury of being able to take time off work to do so. NSSF is offering the ability for everyone to be heard via a letter or phone call. It is crucial that every pro-Second Amendment individual makes sure their voice is heard one way or another and now NSSF makes it easy for you to take action. Call or write your federal and state legislators today and urge them to protect your right to own and use the firearms of your choice for target shooting, hunting, personal and home protection and collecting.

Obama Justice Department Reveals Truth About State of the Union Claims

Obama managed to turn in a State of the Union performance that was filled with more theatrical pandering than the event is typically known for. Once again, seeking to capitalize off tragedy by opting for emotional, rather than reasoned arguments, the President reiterated his support for increased background checks and bans on common semi-automatic firearms and their magazines, which he referred to as "weapons of war and massive ammunition magazines." In a white paper dated January 4 and obtained by NRA-ILA, the deputy director of the National Institute for Justice --DOJ's research and evaluation agency--said that the proposals before Congress are unlikely to have an effect unless they are made even more draconian. For instance, the document makes clear that the effectiveness of "universal" background checks "depends on ... requiring gun registration." On the topic of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, NIJ writes, "In order to have an impact, large capacity magazine regulation needs to sharply curtail availability to include restrictions on importation, manufacture, sale, and possession." As for popular semi-automatic firearms, the NIJ notes, "Since assault weapons are not a major contributor to U.S. gun homicide and the existing stock of guns is large, an assault weapons ban is unlikely to have an impact on gun violence. If coupled with a gun buyback and no exemptions then it could be effective." [Source: NRA/ILA]

Twenty State Attorneys File Briefs

Supporting SAF Appeal

Twenty state attorneys general have filed an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the Second Amendment Foundation's petition for a Writ of Certiorari in a case challenging New York's gun permitting statute, along with several other interested parties that have filed their own briefs. The case is known as Kachalsky v. Cacace and was argued before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. SAF is represented by attorney Alan Gura, who won both the Heller and McDonald Second Amendment cases before the Supreme Court. "We are delighted at the support being shown by attorneys general in Alaska, Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New Mexico and 13 other states, and particularly for the leadership of Virginia Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli in bringing them all together," said SAF founder and executive vice president Alan Gottlieb. "This case is all about an individual's right to carry a firearm outside the home for personal protection, and it is gratifying to see so much support." Additional briefs have also been filed by the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence represented by former Attorney General Edwin Meese III, the National Rifle Association represented by former Solicitor General Paul D. Clement, plus the American Civil Rights Union, Academics for the Second Amendment, Cato Institute, the Second Amendment Preservation Association, New Jersey Second Amendment Society and Commonwealth Second Amendment, Inc.
