Ducks Unlimited has reached a conservation milestone with more than 13 million acres of habitat conserved in North America. The groundbreaking number is a cumulative accomplishment of the millions of DU members, as well as volunteers and partners, who have been a part of the organization over the past 76 years. "Coming on the heels of DU's 75th anniversary year, this milestone is a fitting tribute to the hard work of each and every member, volunteer and staff member who has contributed in any way over the past three-quarters of a century," said DU CEO Dale Hall.

Just catching a glimpse of the modern recreations of the 8x external adjustment USMC scope or the 2 1/2x U.S. Army M73B1 model dating from World War II was a head turner at the 2013 SHOT Show in Las Vegas last month. The icing on the cake for many was when they discovered, on display for the first time, the remake of the 3-9x40mm range finding USMC M40 scope dating from the Vietnam era.

What if Bob just wants to be a gardener?

David A. Lombardo

You have to give The Messiah credit where credit is due. Other presidents have suffered silently over having their hands tied by that nasty, old, out of date Constitution.

Finally we have a president who is smarter than those of us who live in flyover country. Small minded paranoids who clutch their bibles and their guns with such poor reading comprehension they think the Constitution was written to protect their rights and limit the power of the government.

Intelligent guys understand it's nothing more than a living document designed by a bunch of rich, old white guys that has to be put in context to be understood. The context apparently being that once you elect a Messiah it's okay to use it as toilet paper.

More to the point, it's okay to just issue executive orders for small, inconsequential things such as assassinating American citizens.

Personally, I think The Messiah must have eaten bad sushi to come up with the logic that concludes waterboarding a terrorist is wrong but shooting an American citizen, from the sky no less, is okay. Admittedly, I can see how it does meet the broad sense of the concept of due process. I mean, you know, the guy at Creech Air Force Base flying the unmanned drone over Afghanistan does have to get the thumbs up before shooting the American citizen 30,000 feet below.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for revoking the birth certificate of any terrorist whether his name is Abdul or Bob, but am I the only one that thinks maybe Bob's U.S. passport might give him a bit of a leg up in the, "Bob, what the hell are you doing department" prior to lighting him up?

What if Bob is some dumb American in the wrong place at the wrong time and the 26 year old kid eating a twinky at Creech Air Force Base has OD'ed on sugar and misinterprets what he sees through a camera a quarter of the world away and 30,000 feet above Bob. Seriously, shouldn't we have a chat with Bob before we liquefy him with a spent uranium round?

What if Bob is there for reasons Obama believes are acceptable. Stuff like he's there to find work in the lawn care industry or maybe just start a local chapter of the Latin Kings or Gangster Disciples. I mean we'd let Bob sneak into the U.S. to do it and give him free benefits and health care to boot.

Now I know the White House is saying we're only flying drones and doing this in Afghanistan and then only to "American citizens if they are believed to be "senior operational leaders" of al-Qaida or "an associated force" -- even if there is no intelligence indicating they are engaged in an active plot to attack the U.S." And I thought Obama and Eric Holder couldn't in their wildest imaginations come up with something more stupid than Operation Fast and Furious; it's good to know I'm fallible.

Now I might have potentially been able to fall asleep at night thinking about this as long as I'd taken a shower to get the stink of it off me. Almost, except for a couple of side notes.

Why it is the Federal government is putting in place the ability to fly unmanned drones over the U.S? Then there are the half million coffins that FEMA has purchased. That's going to require more than four horsemen of the apocalypse to fill those babies.

Then there's the small issue that over the past 10 months the Department of Homeland Security has purchased 1.625 billion rounds of small arms ammunition; the largest order for ammo the Federal government has ever made. Are you listening to this? 1.625 billion rounds of small arms ammo. U.S. soldiers used 5.5 million rounds of ammo a month in Iraq. If you do the math, DHS can wage a full scale war for almost 30 years.

And finally, my personal favorite, DHS chief Napolitano has put out a request for a bid on 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO personal defense weapons also known as assault weapons when owned by civilians. We know they're bad and not practical for personal defense yet right in the request for a bid DHS specifically refers to them as personal protection weapons for its agents. Oh yeah, she also wants them to have 30 round mags. Lovely. Tell me again, Mr. President, how we gun nuts are paranoid. And here's a thought, just because we're paranoid doesn't mean you're not really after us.

" Eric Zorn, Chicago Tribune Columnist: The Case for Gun Control"
9:00 - 10:00 P.M. AM560 THE ANSWER

Join David and Tim as they interview Chicago Tribune Columnist Eric Zorn about his January 28th column titled, "Appreciating the need for gun respect" specifically and his perspective on Chicago, Illinois and national gun control proposals in general. While Zorn has a liberal political view, and supports increased gun control, his column was well written and free of anti-gun clichés. We believe this will be an interesting and insightful discussion rather than debate on the differences of opinion over gun control.

Cook County Prez turns victims into criminals

Demonstrating once again that she thinks law abiding gun owners are to be loathed and despised, Cook County's resident curmudgeon and board president Toni Preckwinkle has enacted yet another piece of anti-gun legislation. She loves to make gun owners look intractable and without moral compass. The latest would require gun owners to report the make, model and serial number of a firearm, along with the date and location of purchase, when it is lost, stolen destroyed or transferred. Who could possibly object to that? Well, you have 48 hours from the time the firearm disappears not from the time you discover it's missing. Sounds like a moot point? Not if you're on vacation when your house is broken into. There's no provision for any deviation from the moment it was stolen; its 48 hours or a $1,000 fine for the first offense, $1,500 for each gun on the second offense and $2,000 for each subsequent violation. It goes into effect in August. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said, "I believe by passing this ordinance and working with local agencies we will be able to make our communities and streets safer places for our children and families." Really, how does criminalizing the victim of a gun theft make the streets safer, Sheriff?

Gun controllers on the move in Northern Suburbs

The Illinois State Rifle Association has sent out an alert regarding a Northbrook Village Council meeting to consider gun bans, licensing and registration. "North suburban gun control groups are trying to establish a foothold to implement their plans to ban your guns, register you like a sex offender, and otherwise infringe upon your 2nd Amendment rights," the alert says. "The northern suburbs are fertile ground for the gun grabbers, it is up to law-abiding gun owners from across Illinois to nip these gun control plans in the bud. This is a problem for every Illinois firearm owner!" The ISRA urges all lawful firearm owners to attend the event and to be sure to wear an NRA, ISRA or IGOLD shirt and/or hat. "We want to fill the room with a sea of gold and if you have a smart phone, be sure to record what goes on at the hearings," it adds. The meeting is scheduled to be held at the Northbrook Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Ln, Northbrook, Ill. on Tuesday, February 12th at 7:30 PM. Plan to arrive before 6:45 to get a seat or risk being locked out.

Open Letter to Congress from Nebraska

The Nebraska Firearms Owners Association (NFOA), in conjunction with 36 other national, state, and local organization members of the National Coalition to Stop the Gun Ban, released an Open Letter to Congress and the American people announcing their opposition to any effort to institute government controls on private transfers of personal firearms between law-abiding individuals. "In recent weeks, the focus of gun control has shifted from bans on certain firearms and magazines to a push for 'Universal Background Checks' on private transfers between law-abiding citizens," NFOA President Wesley Dickinson stated. "On the surface it may seem like a good idea; however, these 'Universal Background Checks' on private transfers are much more complicated, more expensive, and fraught with more hazards than most people realize. Furthermore, extending existing background checks to include private transfers would not have prevented the recent tragedies our nation has experienced, which is what anti-gun politicians and lobbyists claim to hold as their goal. As Nebraskan firearm owners learn the dangerous implications and utter ineffectiveness of these proposals, they will increasingly join the opposition to them."

COHA Issues Warning on California Senate Action

The California State Senate held a press conference at the State Capitol this week announcing an aggressive package of new bills that include measures to ban the possession of magazines holding more than ten rounds, require individuals to surrender all banned magazines to the government, require gun and ammunition registration, and ban the sale of rifles that have a detachable magazine. During the press conference, President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg made it very clear that the Senate's package of gun control legislation is a high priority for him and expressed confidence in passing the measures out of the Senate. Steinberg also wants to pass these gun bills as quickly as possible. Given the Democrats supermajority in the Assembly and the Senate, it is possible for these bills to pass as an urgency package and become law in a few short months.
