The Conundrum of the Fourth Estate -

Why I need an AR-15

David A. Lombardo

This isn't what Edmund Burke had in mind when he used the term "Fourth Estate" during a debate in the House of Commons of Great Britain. It marked the lifting of a ban on press coverage of the British Parliament in 1787. Burke referred to the press as the Fourth Estate; the first three, being the clergy, the nobility and, from a ruling perspective in dead last place - the commoners. It was a landmark decision, letting the press cover Britain's political inner sanctum, because the press was looking out for the commoners; the little guys; John Q. Citizen.

With a tip of the hat to Burke, today's interpretation of the three estates is: Legislative, judicial and executive, i.e. the congress, the courts and the president. Unlike Burke's time, today's Fourth Estate is, for the most part, in the bag for The Messiah.

But that little fact notwithstanding, it's not one whit better if they're in the bag for the guys that turn right when they go to their seats in Congress. The press should be neutral. You know, looking out for the commoners; the little guys; John Q. Citizen.

Now I know my red meat eating friends are thinking, "What the hell does this have to do with my AR-15." Well, that's where it gets interesting. Thomas Jefferson said, "I consider trial by jury as the only anchor ever yet imagined by man, by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution."

You see, Jefferson was a Federalist and he believed that a jury, though not technically a Fourth Branch of government, limited the power of the three branches. And who is the jury? With apologies to Pogo, "I have met the jury and he is us."

With the failure of the press to report the truth, warts and all, and be nothing more than a propaganda machine for one party or another, we the people must rightfully assume our role as the Fourth Estate.

The gun-grabbers have given up saying the Second Amendment isn't a right of the people or they don't want to take away hunting rifles. They've taken a new tack and in the traditions of Saul Alinsky are now chanting it is the people's right to own a firearm for personal protection. Bah, humbug.

Okay, my red meat eating compadres, here it comes. The purpose of the Second Amendment is for the common man to be able to prevent being shackled by the other three estates. It guarantees that common men, who far outnumber the politicians and judges, have the ability to prevent oppression even by force, if necessary.

Do I think that's likely to happen? No, I don't but here's the rub; the government has the institutions of the military and law enforcement on their side; if not every member therein. And what is the weapon of choice for the military and law enforcement: The fully automatic M-16. It is not coincidental that no Army in history has ever gone into combat with handguns. No revolver, no semi-auto pistol, no hunting rifle or shotgun is a match for an M-16 and while our AR-15s may only be semi-auto, we so far outnumber those institutions that it renders it a moot point.

Why do I need an AR-15? Because as long as the 80 million gun owners of America have the right to own an AR-15 even the dumbest politician knows the real Fourth Estate renders any forces ineffectual that the government might marshal. My AR-15 is truly a peace keeper.

Reed Exhibitions drops guns from sports show; industry drops Reed

In yet another anti-AR-15 debacle Reed Exhibitions announced last week that it would ban the "sale and display of assault rifles" at its Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show slated to take place February 2-10 in Harrisburg, Penn. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) immediately issued a statement disagreeing with the ban on modern sporting rifles and attempted to negotiate the issue with Reed Exhibitions who also runs NSSF's annual SHOT Show. Reed Exhibitions was intractable and NSSF issued a statement saying, "NSSF has been in intense, frank discussions... to reverse this unacceptable decision.. [and had] reached an impasse." NSSF bailed out and said it would look at other options for their SHOT Show. Like dominoes in a row, the NRA withdrew then Smith & Wesson, Mossberg, Crimson Trace, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Benelli and more. On Thursday, Reed Exhibitions issued a statement saying it has decided to postpone the show. Taken to the woodshed, the tune changed significantly to appear there was no political overtones to the decision. "Our original decision not to include certain products in the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show this year was made in order to preserve the event's historical focus on the hunting and fishing traditions enjoyed by American families," said Chet Burchett, Reed Exhibitions President for the Americas. Yeah, right.

Biden - "We don't have time to prosecute those who lie on background checks"

Jim Baker, NRA-ILA's Director of Federal Affairs, represented NRA at an Obama administration-directed firearm task force led by longtime gun control supporter Vice-President Joe Biden. As detailed in a recent Daily Caller article, Baker was given five minutes to present NRA's concerns and the approach NRA saw as being the most effective way to safeguard our children. During those five minutes, Baker mentioned the need to vigorously prosecute existing gun laws. He further noted the low number of prosecutions for falsifying information on Form 4473s, and the low felony prosecution rate for gun crimes in general. In response to Baker's comments, Vice-President Biden said, "And to your point, Mr. Baker, regarding the lack of prosecutions on lying on Form 4473s, we simply don't have the time or manpower to prosecute everybody who lies on a form, that checks a wrong box, that answers a question inaccurately." That's right: Biden said the administration just doesn't have time to prosecute crimes (felonies punishable by up to a 10-year prison sentence) under existing laws, but is proposing a host of sweeping new laws.

Missouri Sheriffs Pledge To Not Enforce

Obama's Gun Control Laws

With President Obama pushing more gun control, Sheriff Charles Heiss of Johnson County, Missouri is asking fellow law enforcers to sign and send this letter to the president. It expresses concern with the Obama administration and the president's gun control laws he laid out before Congress
last week. "It appears to me and many Americans that there is a genuine desire on the part of your administration to restrict the Second Amendment rights of law abiding American citizens in the interest of curbing gun violence in our nation," Heiss wrote. "Any attempt to restrict these Second Amendment rights through executive order is unconstitutional and tantamount to an all-out assault on the United States Constitution." In the letter Heiss tells the president that he has a duty to protect his constituents from incidents of crime and has the responsibility to protect and preserve their rights and liberties. He is one of about a dozen sheriffs in Missouri to have signed and sent Heiss' letter. "President Obama should quit his attempts to take guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens and instead focus on stopping the criminals that will get them no matter what. It is imperative we strengthen the penalty for criminals who use weapons in the commission of a crime or to cause bodily harm."
