EDITORIAL

It's never been about the kids

David A. Lombardo

The National Rifle Association issued a statement on Thursday expressing concern over its meeting with President Obama saying, "We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment."

On the surface one could commend the President as the White House held meetings with most of the major stakeholders in the issue ranging from New York City's Mayor Bloomberg's Mayors Against Guns to the NRA and those in between. He even had the good sense not to put them all in the same room at the same time though squaring off and duking it out might have been fairer than the high stakes poker game they played with a stacked deck.

Of course the NRA was invited to the show; there wouldn't have been a show if they'd been excluded. The NRA was window dressing; they served no other purpose than to be a sound bite expressing how the administration reached out to all concerned parties and took their counsel into consideration. Let's face it, inviting the NRA to the White House to discuss a reasonable course of action to solve gun violence was the moral equivalent of inviting a chicken to lunch at KFC.

The meeting disappoints me too but for a markedly different reason. What disappoints me is the NRA would issue a public statement saying they were disappointed. Seriously? The millions of dollars donated to the NRA's Institute for Legislative Affairs are being handled by someone who didn't know this Administration considers the NRA to be one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? Someone who doesn't understand this has nothing to do with keeping children safe? If it were about keeping children safe we'd put armed guards in schools or better yet, as an increasing number of school boards are now advocating, letting educators carry concealed weapons.

The anti-gun crowd scoffs at it, though they didn't when President Clinton initiated a program to do it which, to this day, has schools with law enforcement officers in residence. Now they belittle the NRA's position to do the same thing yet the President's children go to a school with armed guards and the President, Mayors Bloomberg and Emanuel, and a host of other anti-gun elected officials are surrounded by armed guards. If it doesn't work why are we spending millions of taxpayer dollars for them and their families to have armed guards?

It has never been about keeping children safe and it never will be about keeping children safe. Let's get this straight. The left's psychotic need for gun control is only about keeping ever increasingly tyrannical politicians safe. They can hardly wait for the next tragedy to occur so they can once again tout the need to disarm the public; Second Amendment be damned.

The recurring question these hypocrites ask, and they have the temerity to ask it behind a wall of armed guards - a protection they would deny their own constituents - is, "why does a civilian need as assault weapon." Setting aside for the moment that the term assault weapon is a manufactured term to demonize a firearm based only on its appearance, the very act of them asking the question is exactly why civilians need an assault rifle.

SCI prevails in Rocky Mountain

National Park Elk Case

Earlier this week the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the legality of the National Park Service's use of "qualified volunteers," as agents for culling the elk overpopulation on Rocky Mountain National Park. These volunteers often include members of the hunting community who are willing to offer their expertise and time to assist in wildlife management. WildEarth Guardians went to federal court in Colorado to challenge this approach, insisting that the NPS instead should have introduced a population of wolves to the park to manage the elk overpopulation. Safari Club International joined the case as an intervener defendant to support the volunteer program.  After the Colorado District Court ruled in SCI's and the NPS's favor, WildEarth appealed. The victory in the Tenth Circuit will hopefully encourage the NPS to enlist the aid of volunteers from the hunting community in the management of wildlife overpopulations that have become a problem at many of our nation's National Parks. Currently, the NPS is running a very successful volunteers program on Theodore Roosevelt National Park to reduce that park's elk overpopulation.  SCI will continue to recommend the use of volunteers for wildlife management to assist in future NPS management planning.

Madigan challenges Appeals Court

over concealed carry

Richard Pearson, executive director of The Illinois State Rifle Association, sent an informational email to ISRA members regarding Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's filing a challenge to last month's appeals court ruling that struck down Illinois' ban on concealed carry. The decision was rendered by a three member panel of the appeals court. Madigan has petitioned the full court of appeals to review the panel's ruling. "We fully expected Madigan to file this challenge. We see it as a desperate attempt to capitalize on the Newtown murders. We are confident that Madigan's challenge will go down in flames and the clock on the 180-day implementation of concealed carry will continue to tick," Pearson wrote. After a week of gun owners bombarding legislators with telephone calls and emails, Pearson suggests everyone stand down for the time being while the legislature is out and he will keep the public informed. "Do not make any calls to the federal judges or you might jeopardize our case," he stressed. Then suggested a call to attorney general Lisa Madigan letting her know you don't appreciate her efforts to leave you defenseless would be in order.

Utah town makes arming households a top priority

In a January 8th article in Myfoxny.com, author Brady McCombs wrote of a Utah town that's stressing its residents own a firearm and in particular its teacher. McCombs reports that Spring City Councilman Neil Sorensen first proposed an ordinance requiring a gun in every household in the town of 1,000. The rest of the council scoffed at making it a requirement but they unanimously agreed to move forward with an ordinance "recommending" the idea. The council also approved funding to offer concealed firearms training to the 20 teachers and administrators at the local elementary school. "It sends a statement that criminals better think twice," Sorensen told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "If a teacher would have had a concealed weapon in Sandy Hook, I think the death loss would have been fewer. If sane, trained people had guns, they could have shot back." The measure, which will go before the full council in February for further review, seems to have the support of the council's five members and many residents

in the farming community about 90 miles south of Salt Lake City. McCombs reports school administrators were cool to the idea. "The more guns you have in the school, the more dangerous it is," said Leslie Keisel, superintendent of the North Sanpete School District. [Source: Myfoxny.com]

HK Adds MR762A1 Long Rifle

Package (LRP) for 2013

011113c

Heckler & Koch USA has taken a standard MR762A1 (caliber 7.62 x 51 mm NATO) semi-automatic rifle and turned it into a more effective precision rifle by adding a Leupold 3-9VX-R Patrol 3-9 x 40 mm scope and mount, HK G28 adjustable cheek piece butt stock, and LaRue Tactical BRM-S bipod. The result is the MR762A1 Long Rifle Package (LRP); a semi-automatic rifle originally developed from the fully automatic HK417. It employs the same HK proprietary gas piston operating system found on current HK rifles and carbines, using a "pusher" rod in place of the gas tube normally found in AR15/M16/M4-style firearms. According to HK, it virtually eliminates malfunctions that are common to direct impingement gas systems since hot carbon fouling and waste gases do not enter the receiver area. This is the same key feature critical to the success of the current generation of HK rifles used by leading military and law enforcement customers. Accessories include an Ergo Pistol Grip from Falcon Industries, the same Blue Force Gear sling used on the HK M27 IAR supplied to the USMC, and an OTIS cleaning kit. It comes with one 20 and one 10-round magazine and a Pelican case.
