Illinois wants you to kiss your ARs goodbye starting this Sunday

David A. Lombardo

As if the week didn't start off badly enough with Senator Dianne Feinstein's revelation she's going to introduce a bill in the U.S. Congress that will essentially ban almost all civilian owned firearms, it ended up being a touch-and-go week in the Illinois State legislature too.

Liberals, having neither shame nor respect, are using the Sandy Hook mass murder to further their own agenda. As Mayor Rahm Emanuel once said, "You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before."

Amid all the hoopla surrounding Feinstein's announcement was a clear, concise letter sent to her that subsequently went viral in social media. Lest you doubt my veracity you may read the letter in its entirety on Snopes.com; the Internet guru for documenting fact or fiction. Given Snopes has been shown to have a liberal bias it all the more underscores the tome is legit. In the letter, United States Marine Corps Cpl Joshua Boston spelled it out so even a myopic liberal such as Feinstein could wrap her brain around it.

"I will not register my weapons should this bill be passed, as I do not believe it is the government's right to know what I own. Nor do I think it prudent to tell you what I own so that it may be taken from me by a group of people who enjoy armed protection yet decry me having the same," Boston wrote, then went on to say, "I am not your subject. I am the man who keeps you free. I am not your servant. I am the person whom you serve. I am not your peasant. I am the flesh and blood of America."

It's a good read and neatly reflects what I believe is the mood of a pretty good percentage of the almost 80 million firearm owners in the U.S. When this nutball piece of legislation hits the floor be sure to call your Senator in Washington and voice your opinion.

Speaking of voicing your opinion, I thank you for having done so this week. By 7:00 p.m. Thursday every state Senator's voicemail was full. As a result the State Senate leadership postponed the vote recognizing they didn't have the juice to pull off a thumbs-up for HB815 and HB1263 before recessing for the weekend.

In total, the bills seek to ban, tax and require registration for semi-automatic firearms or detachable magazines, impose severe restrictions on shooting ranges and create a myriad of new laws that will turn the most law-abiding, church going, pledge of allegiance pledging citizen into Bubba's love child in Stateville Penitentiary.

However, Governor Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel are making a second pass and trying to get them voted into existence during the lame duck session. The duplicitous duo are switching tactics and moving the legislation to the House. On Friday, Amendment #1 to SB2899 was introduced in the Illinois House of Representatives sponsored by anti-gun Rep. Eddie Acevedo spelling out a ban on over 50 percent of the rifles and more than 80 percent of handguns owned by Illinois citizens. The bill is slated to be voted on by the House Judiciary 1 Committee on Sunday Afternoon. It is imperative you once again take up the banner and work the telephone by contacting the following Representatives and stressing you do not support SB2899 and that you expect them to vote the amendment down.

Yes, I know it's the weekend; yes, I know you have plans with the family; yes, I know you've already called Springfield and told them what you think; and yes, if you don't do it again this time next year you may well not have any firearms at all. Please start calling these representatives Saturday morning and continue through Sunday. You done good folks but don't quit now.

The Unabashed Arrogance of the

Gun Control Movement

In a membership update on the situation in Illinois' capitol, Richard Pearson, the Illinois State Rifle Association's executive director, outlined what the bills would do. "The Illinois State Police would be given full control over the design and operation of commercial gun ranges in the state. That control would extend from the design of the bullet backstops to qualifications of range employees and even to the color of the paint on the walls of the men's room. All semi-automatic firearms would be either banned outright, or be so severely taxed and restricted that ownership would be impractical. Cullerton's gun ban would extend to all semiautomatic rifles, pistols and shotguns.  Additionally, many pump action rifles and shotguns would be banned as well including the 1911 and M1 Garand.  Of course, all Glocks, Sig-Sauers, and other popular pistols would be banned as well," Pearson wrote. He also added, there is a "...bizarre and convoluted scheme to register all 'ammunition feeding devices' capable of holding more than 10 rounds including magazines, stripper clips, drums, etc.  Since none of these devices possess serial numbers, owners of these devices would essentially register them under the 'honor system.'  Of course, we all know how well criminals stick to the honor system."

National Coalition Formed To Stop the Gun Ban

The Nebraska Firearms Owners Association (NFOA), in conjunction with other organizations throughout the country, has formed a national coalition to defeat the Obama/Biden/Feinstein Gun Ban proposal. "The NFOA is proud to be a founding member of the Coalition," NFOA President Wesley Dickinson stated. "Compromise with politicians using words like confiscation and registration is not possible." So far, 27 state and national organizations have joined the "National Coalition to Stop the Gun Ban." The objective of the coalition is to kill the proposals, period. It is not to compromise by saddling gun owners with restrictions and whining 'It was the best we could get.' Nothing less than the complete defeat of the Obama/Biden/Feinstein proposals will suffice; All coalition members have agreed that "compromise" is not an option. National organizations include the Firearms Coalition, Gun Owners of America, Rights Watch International, Second Amendment Sisters, and USRKBA.org.

Online Sporting License Sales Growing

In this modern age of digital merchandising and convenient shopping on the web, a growing number of sportsmen and sportswomen are purchasing their licenses online. According to HunterSurvey.com and AnglerSurvey.com, in 2012, the number of hunters and anglers purchasing licenses online grew by 35 percent and 13 percent respectively since 2009. Today, 28 percent of all hunters and 29 percent of all anglers surveyed report buying licenses online. Test efforts by groups such as the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), to help states improve repeat license sales through online marketing have yielded positive results, and with more sportsmen turning to the web to make quick, convenient license purchases, these efforts are expected to improve further. According to Melissa Schilling, the director of recruitment & retention for the NSSF,"We understand hunters have choices. To help ensure they renew their licenses and continue hunting, the NSSF has worked with state wildlife agencies to increase their ability to reach hunters online. Not only have we seen increased hunting as a result of states' online outreach efforts, many states are beginning to adapt online marketing as a best practice."
