EDITORIAL
On Target Radio seeks advertising sales person
David A. Lombardo
For those who don't make a living as an editor, snarky minutia-driven maniacs that they are, you probably didn't notice this issue is Volume 1, Number 52. We have survived an entire year though not without the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. The first issue was called Reactive Target and it turned out I was the only person that understood the name hence a change to On Target Newsletter. Since then we've developed On Target Media Group which includes the newsletter and On Target Radio which is in its 16th week.
The radio show has been growing steadily and we've capitalized on social media as much as possible. We have a wide array of programming and guests, the phones and social media are yielding lots of questions, what we're not doing well with is finding sponsors. We have the opportunity to expand to two hours, which we'd love to do, but we need sponsors. We're looking for people who can sell advertising space. This would be a part time, independent contractor position based on commission with a potential for over $36,000 a year. If you're a self-starter that can develop, follow up and close leads you may want to look at our Advertising Salesman & Sponsorship Package's. |

Please join us by tuning in to AM560 WIND radio if you're in the Northern Illinois area or by going to www.560wind.com and listening in live-stream on the Internet.

Feinstein Goes For Broke With New Gun-Ban Bill
The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Affairs is warning trouble is brewing on the horizon. NRA/ILA has said Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), author of the federal assault weapon and large ammunition magazine ban of 1994-2004, has announced that on January 3, the first day of the new Congress, she will introduce a bill to which her 1994 ban will pale by comparison. According to the NRA, Feinstein has been working on the legislation for over a year and it will be more Draconian than the previous version. The new ban would, among other things, adopt new definitions of assault weapon that would affect a much larger variety of firearms, require current owners of such firearms to register them with the federal government under the National Firearms Act, and require forfeiture of the firearms upon the deaths of their current owners. Other changes would reduce, from two to one, the number of permitted external features on various firearms. The 1994 ban permitted various firearms to be manufactured only if they were assembled with no more than one feature listed in the law. Feinstein's new bill would prohibit the manufacture of the same firearms with even one of the features. The new bill includes a new, far more extensive, list of external features that would be banned. |
Swimming upstream faster than the current
The passage of the DNR Sustainability Bill (SB1566/FAQs) is a significant victory for conservation and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). What the bill does is allow the agency to keep state parks and sites open and begin to address a backlog of needed facility repairs, which now totals $750 million. It also allows us to address other program problems for the agency.
The bill took nearly a year to negotiate and included over 40 DNR constituent groups in talks, who worked with sponsor Rep. Frank Mautino for a consensus bill. A key component and big win for conservation included in the bill was the rarely used anti-sweeps language that ensures funds would not be used for other purposes than keeping state parks open and programs working. Governor Pat Quinn's management and budget director also signed a letter committing to not sweep these funds and hold DNR's funding level. The Sustainability Bill will take effect as law on January 1st, and we project that eventually it will provide DNR with an estimated $30 to $33 million dollars annually to be deposited into dedicated funds connected with each revenue source. |
Smith & Wesson buys back stock
Firearms-maker Smith & Wesson Holding said it will buy back an additional $15 million of its stock as gun control talk swirls in the aftermath of the massacre at a Connecticut elementary school. The company said it has completed a $20 million stock buy-back announced December 6th before Adam Lanza's rampage in Newtown. Now, the company said its board has authorized an additional $15 million in repurchases through June 30th. Shares closed Thursday at $8.26, up 30 cents or 3.8 percent. The board of directors approved the buyback of an additional $15 million worth of stock, to be completed by June 30, 2013. The fresh authorization came in the wake of rumors that new gun restriction would be implemented in the U.S. however the timing of this additional share buyback raises the question is it a strategic move to arrest the plummeting share price, assuring shareholders that all is well with the company. |

Toot your horn at Vegas World Elk Calling Championship (550)
The World Elk Calling Championships will reach its most elite level ever when the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation celebrates the 25th anniversary of the event at Elk Camp 2013 in Las Vegas. The Champion of Champions competition will bring the top elk callers in the world together on the same stage to determine which contestant is the master at mimicking the wildest sounds in America's backcountry. "This promises to be among the most exciting events at Elk Camp," said Steve Decker, RMEF vice president of marketing. "After we crown the 2013 champion, that participant will immediately join previous years' winners from the professional division and we'll see and hear who really is the Champion of Champions." Twelve men currently lay claim to the title of professional world elk calling champion including Bryan Langley of McMinnville, Ore., the 2012 reigning champ. Six of those contestants won multiple world championships. One of them is Joel Turner of Eatonville, Wash., who came out top in 2008, 2010, and finished as runner-up in 2012. |
