Editorial: Elections Have Consequences

David A. Lombardo

Anyone who watched last Tuesday evening's debate should have no question in their mind about a Lame Duck Obama's position on gun control. I've been saying this for four years but the Obama acolytes have poo-poo'd it saying he's shown no anti-gun signs. Even after drinking all that wine from the chalice they should be able to remember Obama the Illinois Senator was pretty unfriendly to those who believe the Bill of Rights is... well, actually a bill of citizen's rights.

After last Tuesday's debate, two things were clear: Candy Crowley wasn't a moderator but rather the second half of the Obama/Crowley tag team, and The Prez doesn't like all those law abiding citizens running around with guns that fit a political definition called assault weapons. Perhaps if the Commander in Chief had any actual experience in the military he'd know there is no such military term as assault weapon but excuse my foray into logic.

In his October 17th piece, Obama suggests he would seek to revive ban on assault weapons, Reuters' Sam Youngman wrote, "Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney engaged in a rare tussle over gun control on Tuesday and Obama opened the door to pushing for a ban on assault weapons if he wins a second term."

"During their second election debate, both men largely danced around a gun-control question, a reflection of how they are wary of offending voters who support gun rights.

However, Obama did say that he would back an assault-weapons ban like the one President Bill Clinton signed in 1994."

Mind you, I'm not nave about Willard Mitt Romney who signed a similar ban as governor of Massachusetts however he has gone on record saying he would not support such a ban as president. When Mitt called and asked me to meet for coffee I was busy washing my hair and couldn't make it so I don't have any insider information. However, the NRA endorsed Romney and the NRA doesn't turn down that kind of coffee-meeting request. My money is on the Gov who convinced the NRA, the most rabid pro-gun operation in the solar system, that he would be a pro-gun president.

One thing for sure, The Prez has gone on record for another ban. "What I'm trying to do is to get a broader conversation about how do we reduce the violence generally," Obama said during the debate at Hofstra University. "Part of it is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced."

Uh, here's a thought. Instead of banning the AR-15 in the hands of a million 50 year old, white, middle class guys living in the suburbs who commute in minivans to work, how about figuring out how to deal with those who kill one another on a daily basis instead? Isn't that what community organizers do - organize communities? How about organizing the gang banger community and giving them an incentive to stop killing one another. You know, like the death penalty. Oh wait, Illinois doesn't have the death penalty. It's bad to kill killers but its okay for killers to kill citizens who aren't allowed to carry a firearm to defend themselves.

Emily Miller's Gun Owners Election piece in the Washington Times last Tuesday will bring a chill to even the most passive Second Amendment supporter. In it she writes about Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens' admonition to Congress saying they should pass more federal gun laws. Stevens, you may recall, wrote the dissenting opinion in both the Heller and McDonald cases.

Miller wrote the 92-year-old jurist explained the landmark gun rulings leave room for restrictions on the right to carry outside the home, bans on certain styles of firearms, elimination of carry rights in "sensitive" places and background-check requirements for private gun sales.

"The Second Amendment provides no obstacle to regulations prohibiting the ownership or the use of the sorts of automatic weapons used in the tragic multiple killings in Virginia, Colorado and Arizona in recent years," Justice Stevens' wrote. "Maybe you have some kind of constitutional right to have a cellphone with a pre-dialed 911 in the number at your bedside and that might provide you with a little better protection than a gun which you're not used to using."

I see a marketing opportunity in this for Cabela's. They could offer a special pink camo women's carrying case for the cell phone and a tongue depressor. You remember the tongue depressor that the Illinois State Police recommended women carry to make themselves throw up and be less desirable to a potential rapist.

Regardless, as a second term president Obama is pretty much in the catbird seat with respect to filling supreme court vacancies with virulent, anti-gun nutballs. Let's be honest, most of the Supremes are about two heartbeats away from the big dirt nap and the likelihood of one, and probably two, open seats is high. When that happens, you can kiss your gun rights goodbye. Go visit Merry Old England and ask around about gun rights; bring plenty of aspirin.

Panel Revives Suit Against

Gun Maker and Distributor

In an October 12th article written by John Caher in the New York Law Journal, he reports that a state appellate court decision reinstating a gun liability lawsuit may be the first in the nation to hold that the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act does not preclude-and, in fact, specifically permits-an action where the plaintiff alleges the manufacturer and distributor, as well as the dealer, knowingly violated gun control laws. "The gun industry has been arguing in courts across the country that the law gives them immunity from civil liability," said Jonathan Lowy, an attorney for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. "The Williams v. Beemiller decision holds that gun companies who knowingly supply the criminal gun market can be held accountable in court." The National Shooting Sports Foundation said the ruling is contrary to established law and inconsistent with the commerce in arms act, a preemption statute. "We think at the end of the day this case will either be reviewed by the Court of Appeals or dismissed on summary judgment," said Lawrence Keane, senior vice president and general counsel of the Connecticut-based group.

Mule Deer Foundation Donates $157K

to Scholastic Shooting Trust

For the second year in a row a partnership with Midway USA Foundation and the Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) has worked through local MDF Chapters to raise $157,250 for youth shooting programs. The donation has been made to the Scholastic Shooting Trust (SST) and divided among 55 high schools, universities and colleges in 16 MDF active states. SST was formed to provide funding for shooting sports education in public and private high schools, colleges and universities. The trust is a mission of MidwayUSA Foundation and started by Larry and Brenda Potterfield in 2007 to support education in shooting sports, hunting, firearms safety and outdoor skills. MDF's M.U.L.E.Y. (Mindful, Understanding, Legal & Ethical Youth) Program continues to get youth involved in shooting sports and wildlife conservation reaching over 10,000 youth each year. "The 2012 Mule Deer Foundation's fundraising effort for the Scholastic Shooting Trust will help to enhance current programs and jump start new ones," said Miles Moretti, President and CEO of the Mule Deer Foundation. "We believe that having our local MDF Chapters take part in enhancing local shooting programs directly impacts the introduction of the next generation of sportsmen and women."

IWI Introduces X95 Assault

Rifle 5.45 mm Conversion

101912d

Israel Weapon Industries has developed a conversion kit for the X95 assault rifle for 5.45mm ammunition making it the only weapon in the world with 3 calibers: 5.56mm, 9mm, and 5.45mm. The X95 can be used as an assault rifle, carbine, or submachine gun with an effective range of 150m in 9mm caliber configuration. It enables the X95 to be operated worldwide, due to its compatibility with both western and eastern ammunition thus saving training time, spare parts, and overall costs. The new kit has already been armament and operationally tested in extreme conditions including dust, water, heat, and cold (- 60 C) - as well as for shooting accuracy - passing all tests with remarkable success. Designed for military, law enforcement, and Special Forces, the X95 was developed in close cooperation with elite units and was tailored to their specific requirements. Incorporating advanced technology enabling the conversion between calibers within minutes, Special Ops can use the same weapon platform for a wide array of scenarios. The kit can include a silencer for all calibers, distinguishing the X95 as the ideal weapon for Special Forces dealing with complex situations.

Gibbs Unveils World's First

High-Speed Sports Amphibian

This is simply cool so here it is: The Gibbs Quadski. It is the world's first high-speed sports amphibian and was the dream of two visionary entrepreneurs: Alan Gibbs, the 101912b company's founder, and Neil Jenkins, its chairman. It is the product of millions of research dollars and years of development in the United States, New Zealand and in the UK, and is now in production at a 54,000 sq ft assembly plant in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It is equipped with a 175-horsepower BMW Motorrad engine and transmission. With the press of a button its wheels retract when entering the water and deploy when approaching land. The Gibbs amphibian will cruise at 45 mph on both land and water, transitions from one to the other in about five seconds, weighs 1,300 pounds, is equipped with a 15-gallon fuel tank and will be available in five colors - red, yellow, blue, silver and black. It's slated to retail for about $40,000 when introduced next month and the company expects to have more than 20 dealership locations in place within the next 12 months primarily in the Midwest, New York, Texas and the southeastern United States. White dinner jacket, Walther PPK and shoulder holster sold separately.
