NWF Asks Ryan to Pledge to

Protect America's Public Lands

Larry Schweiger, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, wrote a letter to Rep. Paul Ryan today seeking clarity on the Romney-Ryan ticket's public lands policy. The letter reads in part:

As an organization deeply committed to the conservation interests of America's hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts we appreciated your statement in an October 1 interview with Outdoor Life magazine that "we need to open up public lands for access for hunting." Public lands are critical part of America's national heritage, and access for all Americans is a conservation legacy that provides everyone the opportunity to hunt and fish. Public lands also play a critical role supporting local economies: in 2011, 13.7 million hunters spent $33.9 billion and 33.1 million anglers spent $22 billion.

We are concerned however that in another portion of the interview you seemed unfamiliar with the provisions of your budget proposal which call for liquidating millions of acres of America's public lands, resulting in less access for sportsmen.

While your statement to Outdoor Life indicated this was more about "buildings and assets like cars ... [and] vacant properties," your budget proposal specifically touts legislation (HR 1126) introduced by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) as a model to sell federal lands to generate revenue. In fact, HR 1126 would force the government to sell off 3.3 million acres in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming to the highest bidder.

The 2012 Republican Party Platform also takes the position of selling our great western landscapes to increase revenue to the federal Treasury. Just last week, Rep. Steve Pearce (R- NM) said that if elected, Gov. Romney would "reverse [the] trend of public ownership of lands."

Needless to say, these proposals to sell off public lands would ultimately lead to diminished access for hunting, fishing, recreational shooting and other outdoor activities. These measures run counter to strong hunter interest for increasing access to public lands, as demonstrated in a new national poll of sportsmen by the Republican-aligned firm Chesapeake Beach Consulting. The poll found that 79 percent of hunters and anglers nationally favor increasing access to public lands.

In light of these contradictions, we'd ask that you clarify whether a Romney-Ryan Administration could be counted on not to sell off or liquidate federal public lands that are vital for sustaining the $730 billion outdoor recreation industry? Will you commit to America's sportsmen that there will be no such public land sell-off if Governor Romney is elected?

Illinois' Cook County Proposes Violence Tax on Guns & Ammo

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle recently announced plans to penalize, through taxation, the sale of guns and ammunition sold in the City of Chicago and its suburbs.   This penalty is set to be proposed to the Cook County Board of Commissioners next week. Proposals such as this are frequently sold to the public as a way to reduce crime and increase tax revenue. However, this is nothing more than a politically motivated stunt to impose a punitive tax on a targeted group of law-abiding citizens who seek to exercise a constitutionally guaranteed right.  This proposed plan would subject purchases of any firearm or ammunition to an additional tax above and beyond the rate at which other goods and services in this area are taxed.  There is no evidence to suggest those who would pay this tax are misusing firearms and causing violence in Cook County.  This penalty would only negatively affect law-abiding gun owners, and in this time of economic trouble would severely harm legitimate business owners inside Cook County as people look to avoid the penalties by purchasing guns and ammunition elsewhere.

Please contact Board President Preckwinkle and the Cook County Board of Commissioners TODAY and demand that they halt their attacks on the Second Amendment.

This October, Wiley X will once again be supporting The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) in its worldwide effort to raise awareness of breast cancer and fund the search for a cure to this disease that impacts the lives of so many women and families. This stylish sunglass has quickly become one of the company's top sellers, thanks to its unique Cotton Candy colored frames and a choice of Coral Pink or Polarized Bronze lenses. Each pair of Lacey sunglasses also comes with a BCRF Pink Ribbon sticker to raise awareness of this organization and the need to support its efforts all year long.

Ruffed Grouse Society Reactivates Woodcock Migration Mapping

The Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) is again providing access to its National American Woodcock Migration Mapping System -- an online tool to track the migrations of the American woodcock. Hunters and bird watchers are encouraged to enter their woodcock activity reports this fall and winter. As the birds return north, bird dog trainers and bird watchers again will be able to enter reports until April 30. In partnership with Waterfowler.com -- the online authority in waterfowl migration tracking -- RGS started providing real-time tracking of the annual American woodcock migrations in 2006; it has continued each year since. The advanced Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping system relies on daily migration data provided by hunters and bird watchers. Users simply enter the zip-code for the area they're reporting on, select if the woodcock activity in that area is Light, Medium, Heavy, or at its Peak and submit. A link to access the USPS Zip-code look up based on the nearest town name to the activity is provided. According to RGS Webmaster Ron Burkert, "This mapping is provided as part of a mapping tool for various waterfowl groups, doves and American woodcock. Data is collected and displayed for 24-hour periods. Historical maps of the prior day, week, month and season are also provided.

Iowa Early Muzzleloader Deer Season

Opens Saturday

Iowa's early muzzleloader deer season begins October 13 for the 7,500 muzzleloader hunters taking part in the nine-day season. Hunters can expect deer behavior to begin changing as the breeding season, or rut, gets closer. Bucks will begin to make scrapes and rubs and they can become more secretive. "Hunting sites near any remaining green forage or acorns, or trails connecting them to bedding areas are good bets during this season," said Tom Litchfield, state deer biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Muzzleloader hunters are required to wear blaze orange but should remember they will be sharing the woods with well camouflaged bow hunters and others who enjoy the fall countryside. Hunters may notice an impact on the local deer population in certain areas from Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease. Nearly 2,000 EHD cases from 58 counties have been reported. The early muzzleloader season runs through October 21 and hunting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. While the paid license quota filled; landowner-tenant licenses, depredation licenses and some special hunt licenses mostly associated with urban areas are available.
