N.C. Legislation Eases Cell Tower Land Leasing Process
Milestone Now In Talks With Several Municipalities
North Carolina lawmakers have signed House Bill 44, a local government regulatory reform bill, into law. The bill included a provision to allow counties and municipalities to engage in long term cell tower leases without going through a cumbersome disposition of property process. This important legislation, signed into law in late September, opens doors for tower developers like Milestone and wireless carriers to pursue long-term lease agreements. Read full story.

The Amherst County School Board approved moving forward with the construction of a cell tower at Elon Elementary School in Madison Heights, VA, near Lynchburg. The vote, in which the Board decided 5-2 to approve the tower, took place on October 8. The vote finalizes a long process in which Milestone representatives met with community members to discuss the proposed construction.

The proposal for a new cell tower at Corkran Middle School in Glen Burnie, MD was delayed when it was determined that the three-legged "marquee" design (see example at left) did not fit the planning code's definition of a monopole.

The project is now back on track due to an amendment by the County Council of Anne Arundel County. The zoning code was amended to include language allowing for different types of cell towers when installations are located on government-owned land. The Council voted 7-0 in support of the amendment, and the project is now slated for construction in mid-December! See other cell tower types.
