Technology in Schools Remains a Priority

Milestone monitors closely the ongoing challenge of bringing technology to the classroom. While there is no question that the numbers are improving overall, access and equity continue to be key issues and areas for concern. In the Consortium for School Networking 2014 K-12 IT Leadership Survey, mobile learning and wireless access were at the top of the priority list--after only the issue of online assessment readiness. The list adds that "approximately 40% of U.S. classrooms lack the wireless access they need to employ mobile learning, a serious infrastructure problem that is receiving attention by the Federal Communications Commission."

Perrymont Elementary Treepole Tower

When AT&T identified a gap in wireless coverage in Lynchburg, VA, the telecom company worked with Milestone, who has an agreement with Lynchburg City to market school property for wireless infrastructure improvements. A location at Perrymont Elementary School was selected for its property size, distance from neighborhood homes and an installment location that would not interfere with the school's use of the land. It also provided a perfect spot for its tree pole concealment to blend in with existing tree cover.

As with every wireless tower it constructs, Milestone then initiated its extensive community outreach program, to include a dedicated website, close work with community leaders and residents, and an array of communication efforts designed to ensure neighbors stay informed, reassured and supportive.

The 135' tree pole was successfully installed after a smooth construction process. Lynchburg City Schools is now realizing the financial benefits while AT&T can provide enhanced coverage to wireless customers in the area.
