Enhanced Opportunity Shoreline Fishing
At these shoreline locations, Summer Flounder(Fluke) and Scup (Porgy) have reduced size limits (16 inches for Summer Flounder and 9 inches for Scup). The shorter size limits increase the probability of bringing home fresh fish for dinner.

Blue crabbing is heating up and is a great family activity with the reward of a delicious crab bake. All you need to do is toss a baited line or trap into many of our tidal rivers and hang on!
Bonus Vouchers for Striped Bass are available from DEEP offices and Coastal State Parks. This program allows the harvest of 1 striped bass between 22 and 27 inches.

Rivers and streams typically experience the warmest water temperatures for the year during July and August. This can be a very stressful time for coldwater species such as trout as the water temperature of many larger rivers and streams approach or exceed lethal temperatures. To avoid these high temperatures trout seek "refuge" in coldwater plumes created by small tributaries or springs/seeps. While fishing, if you encounter a "thermal refuge area", please do not disturb the fish. DEEP has posted many of these important refuge areas with "No Fishing" signage.

July is the perfect time to take part in the Fishing Challenge. See how many types of fish you can catch. Send a snapshot of you and your catch to deep.inland.fisheries@ct.gov. Include your Conservation ID from your passport so we can keep score.

Focus on Fisheries Management
Shore-based fishing is the simplest and most affordable form of salt water fishing and a popular way to enjoy Connecticut's coastline. At the same time, shore fishing is an opportunity to catch the evening's meal. To that end, minimum size limits have been reduced for Summer Flounder (fluke) to 16" and 9" for Scup (porgy) at forty-one public fishing access areas listed in the DEEP Coastal Access Guide. These sites offer good shore based fishing opportunities in at least 18 different communities from Stonington to Westport.
Chain Pickerel (Esox niger): Watch those teeth! Our largest native top predator, Chain Pickerel, named for the chain-like pattern on the sides of it's body, can grow to 20 inches or more. They prefer slow vegetated waters where they lie in wait to ambush unsuspecting prey. Fishing shallow weed beds with a variety of plastic baits, minnow-like lures, or live minnows should get you hooked up with this feisty fish.
DEEP Marine Headquarters- Ferry Landing Park: Great access along the eastern shoreline of the estuary of the lower Connecticut River. Anglers have the opportunity to land a diversity of fish species including Striped Bass, Summer Flounder, Bluefish, Hickory and American Shad. Summer months also bring excellent opportunities to catch blue crabs by simply hanging some bait (chicken legs are a favorite) off of the boardwalk. Other nearby activities worth checking out include; kayaking the miles of tidal marsh channels (launching from either the Great Island Launch or the Lieutenant River), camping ( Hammonasset or Rocky Neck State Parks), and hiking the trails within Chatfield Hollow State Park.
Half-day classes are offered to day camps and youth groups from late June to mid-August. Environmental activities are followed by a fishing experience. We travel to your camp. Fishable water is required.

By purchasing a fishing license, you help to support conservation and improvement of Connecticut's fisheries. Thank you!
