According to a recent press release by the Israel Antiquities Authority, it is believed archaeologists in Israel have finally located the Seleucid Acra, the ancient Greek stronghold constructed by King Antiochus IV in 168 B.C. which was used to control Jerusalem and monitor Temple activity. "The new archaeological finds indicate the establishment of a well-fortified stronghold that was constructed on the high bedrock cliff over-looking the steep slopes of the City of David hill." It wasn't until 141 BCE that Jewish forces led by Simon Maccabee were able to secure victory over the Seleucid Dynasty liberating them from Greek rule. The site will open to the public this Hanukkah.
