| Endowment |
The ULC Endowment Team announces tax-free IRA rollover for those age 70 ½ and older. Act by December 31st to Take Advantage of the New IRA Rollover Law.
Have you been looking for a way to benefit ULC tax free? Are you wondering what to do with the high distributions you are required to take out of your IRA after age 70 ½? Under the new "Fiscal Cliff" law, if you are aged at least 70 ½ you can make tax-advantaged gifts to University Lutheran Chapel from your traditional IRA. But you must make a transfer by December 31 to have it treated as a distribution for 2013:
You can give up to $100,000 from required distributions you receive from your IRA between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013 and not pay federal income tax on the distribution-as long as you transfer it to us by December 31, 2013.
Remember, donations directly to the Endowment Fund keep working year after year. Contact your endowment team members or your financial advisor to make a contribution. (Chuck Jaeger, Tom Ray, Sam Kanenwisher, Judy Timmel)

| Evaluate the Narrative Lectionary |
For the past year, we've been using the "Narrative Lectionary" in worship at the Chapel. This means that we have read a single lesson on Sunday mornings -- focusing on the Old Testament stories in the fall, and the gospel of Luke in the spring. We've read through the Bible sequentially to emphasize the "narrative" of the story of God's promise as it unfolds.
We're in the process of evaluating this experiment and would love your feedback!

| "An Issue of Conscience" - Andrew Stevens | On May 4, 2013 Andrew Stevens presented an "Issue of Conscience" at the Sierra Pacific Synod Assembly in Fresno:
"I'm not worried about a small church. I'm not concerned with smaller numbers, or reduced congregations. I'm not concerned about shrinking. I'm concerned about being a wrong-sized church."

"An Issue of Conscience"- Bob Wohlsen
|
Bob Wohlsen presented an "Issue of Conscience" at the Sierra Pacific Synod regarding our calling to peacemaking.
"Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Twenty four years ago, a man walked onto a Stockton elementary school playground, adjacent to what was then Faith Lutheran Church, with an assault weapon and started shooting. "

Prayers this week
|
Trusting in the promise that God hears us, we pray for those in need and in thanksgiving for God's awesomeness-sometimes with sighs too deep for words and sometimes with an explosive "Yes!" to God's work in our midst. Please include the following in your prayers this week:
- Pray for peace in the world, especially in those places of the world in turmoil, Syria and Iraq in the Middle East, where innocent people continue to be used as pawns by their leaders
- Pray with thanksgiving for Annika's friend Ian whose leukemia is in complete remission following a bone marrow transplant. Pray for continued healing and increased strength.
- Pray with thanksgiving for successful knee replacement surgery for Margaret Moreland, and for a good and speedy recovery.
- For those who are in need of comfort, healing, rest, especially Pepe's mother Juana, and those recovering from injuries sustained in the Boston Marathon bombing, by the explosion in West, Texas, by the building collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh
- For those who grieve the death of loved ones, especially in Dhaka where the death toll continues to rise and those who have lost their lives in US supported military conflicts: David M. Sonka, Eric D. Christian, Thomas P. Murach, Francis G. Phillips IV, Brandon J. Prescott, Kevin Cardoza, Brandon J. Landrum, Mark T. Voss, Victoria A. Pinckney, Herman Mackey III, Trinidad Santiago Jr, Charles P. McCLure, Michael H. Simpson, Robert M. Hetherington, Samuel Flint, William T Savage.
- For relationships; God created us to be in relationships, yet it is among the hardest things we do... to honor the other as he or she is, rather than as we would have the other to be
- For students at Cal, the GTU, and the local seminaries and across the country as they prepare for exams and end of semester, and that those who graduate will find meaningful employment in this yet-sluggish economy.
- For seminarians who are finishing their academic work this spring and are awaiting call, that the Holy Spirit will work to bring together the right combination of gifts and needs as congregations and organizations seek ministry leaders
- For courage to speak up on behalf of the least, the lost, the left out, to be the voice of advocacy on behalf of the other
- Pray that the delegates of those synods meeting in assembly this month will be guided by the Holy Spirit in their work: Northern Great Lakes Synod, Northwestern Ohio Synod, Saint Paul Area Synod and Southeast Michigan Synod; and Northwest Washington Synod, North/West Lower Michigan Synod, Oregon Synod, and Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod delegates, as they meet in assembly to elect bishops.
