Fifth Sunday of Easter
April 2013

What is the New Testament's basic understanding of God's purpose in relationship with the world?

If the answers were easily known, we would not find so many different opinions -- or so we say. On the other hand, this question about God might actually have an obvious answer.

Come early for the Jonathan London Talk!

Putting Environmental Justice on the Map: Bridging the university-community divide.

Environmental justice social movements are linking different ways of knowing and engaging with the environment as they struggle for health and self-determination. London will share examples from his collaborative research with EJ organizations in rural California communities and explore the ethical dimensions of these university-community partnerships.

Jonathan London is the Assistant Professor, Department of Human Ecology at UC Davis and the Director of the Center for Regional Change.

CROP Hunger Walk

A message from Jen Afdahl:

Last Sunday we participated in the annual CROP Hunger Walk in Berkeley. Our team had 6 walkers and we all successfully finished the 3 miles to help end hunger.  (Zack walked for part of it, but finished the walk from the stroller.)

It was a beautiful day and there were so many walkers out for this great cause!  Plus, we raised $775 (with a couple more donations possible)...and we expect that we will have a match from our endowment team.  Thanks so much for your help!

prayerPrayers this week

Trusting in the promise that God hears us, we pray for those in need and in thanksgiving for God's awesomeness-sometimes with sighs too deep for words and sometimes with an explosive "Yes!" to God's work in our midst. Please include the following in your prayers this week:
  • Pray for those places in the world in turmoil, especially Syria and Iraq in the Middle East, where innocent people continue to be used as pawns by their leaders
  • Pray with thanksgiving for Annika's friend Ian whose leukemia is in complete remission following a bone marrow transplant. Pray for continued healing and increased strength.
  • Pray with thanksgiving for those who serve in the US military, and for mercy for the family of Barrett Austin, 20, who died this week in Afghanistan
  • For those who are in need of comfort, healing, rest, especially Herb, Juana, and those injured in the Boston Marathon bombing, by the explosion in West, Texas, by the building collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, by the harbor fires in Mobile, Alabama; and those injured because of the military activity of our country.
  • For those who grieve the death of loved ones due to these same events
  • For relationships; God created us to be in relationships, yet it is among the hardest things we do... to honor the other as he or she is, rather than as we would have the other to be
  • For seminarians who are finishing their academic work this spring and are awaiting call, that the Holy Spirit will work to bring together the right combination of gifts and needs as congregations and organizations seek ministry leaders
  • For courage to speak up on behalf of the least, the lost, the left out, to be the voice of advocacy on behalf of the other
  • In this week when we observe Earth Day (April 22) and World Malaria Day (April 25), pray that each of us, in our own way, will be good stewards of God's creation and will live as caretakers, not consumers, of our planet, and pray for the continued success of the ELCA Malaria Campaign, as this church and others work together to eradicate this disease in Africa.
  • Pray that the delegates of those synods meeting in assembly this week will be guided by the Holy Spirit in their work: Alaska Synod, LaCrosse Area Synod, and Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana Synod, and the Western Iowa Synod as they begin the process of electing a bishop
