Festival of the Transfiguration
February 2013

This Sunday is the festival of the Transfiguration -- the last Sunday before the beginning of Lent!

It is also Evolution Sunday -- we will be celebrating wonder and awe (and sharing Eucharist from a chalice fashioned from fossilized rock).

It is also the liturgy when we shall baptize Anna Julia Fortmann-Roe (daughter of

Scott and Agnieszka Fortmann-Roe).

And finally, we'll hear a little bit about the Lutheran Volunteer Corps, one of our 2012 Social Justice Partners.

There's a lot going on Sunday -- don't miss it.

Help, Thanks, Wow!

For lent, we will be reading together, Anne Lamott's small book, "Help, Thanks, Wow:  The Three Essential Prayers."

"Three simple prayers to get you through tough times, everyday struggles, and the hard work of ordinary life."

"It is these three prayers -- asking for assistance, appreciating the good we witness, and feeling awe at the world -- that get us through the day and show us the way forward."

A New Leaf

Time to turn over a new leaf!  (A new initiative at the Chapel curated by Robyn Gee and Pr. Jeff)

Th
e Chapel has faced many challenges this past year. Conflict over kids' ministry and worship patterns tore apart some relationships. We also took on tough conversations about how we function. It's easy to feel a bit exhausted.

But it's time to shake off the winter and start anew. Instead of hibernating in your usual pew, we are urging you to turn over a new leaf with someone you don't usually talk to, or someone with whom you want a fresh start. This season, as we wait for a sign of spring, we are encouraging people to sprout new relationships and repair old relationships. Sprout a new chapel friendship.

Don't let your
relationships at the chapel get stuck in the past! Go deeper with someone. Don't let friendship stop at sharing the peace! Make your chapel community feel bigger and better.  This effort is not trying to pretend that we will never have conflicts ever again. This is not to say we have to forgive, forget and ignore past hurts. But we do need to live together.

Grab a leaf. Give a leaf.

If there is someone in the chapel that you would really like to sit down with and repair a relationship, but it feels a bit.... awkward! Not to worry -- drop your leaf in the "Assist Me Leaf" basket, and Pastor Jeff will help facilitate a meeting.

In spiritual terms -- embark on a journey of reconciliation and community building with your fellow chapel-goers.   In leaf terms -- give someone a leaf and let them know that you see them, you're interested in them and you don't want to be a stranger!

Social Justice Donations

In the fall, the congregation voted to support

Lutheran Volunteer Corps ($1,000)
Lutheran Peace Fellowship ($500)
East Bay Sanctuary Covenants ($500)

as part of the Annual Social Justice Budget Process.

This Sunday, we will hear more about Lutheran Volunteers Corp, which is a voluntary service program where volunteers work at social and environmental justice organizations and live in intentional community together with other volunteers.

The endowment has already contributed $500 to these organizations and additional donations to these organizations during the next few weeks will be matched by a gift from the endowment up to $1,500 total.

Take a look here at Yvonne's Thank You letter for our donation to LVC!
