Fourth Sunday after Epiphany
February 2013

Luke 7 recounts two stories: Jesus' healing of the centurion's slave and his raising of the widow's only son at Nain. The contrast is clear, and, depending on your own social location, it is either surprising that Jesus is willing to help a Roman centurion or a nondescript Jewish widow. Thankfully, Jesus doesn't bother with such distinctions.

Social Justice Donations

In the fall, the congregation voted to support

Lutheran Volunteer Corps ($1,000)
Lutheran Peace Fellowship ($500)
East Bay Sanctuary Covenants ($500)

as part of the Annual Social Justice Budget Process.

On 2/3, we will hear more about East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, which provides sanctuary--support, protection and advocacy--to low-income and indigent refugees and immigrants.

On 2/10, we will hear more about Lutheran Volunteers Corp, which is a voluntary service program where volunteers work at social and environmental justice organizations and live in intentional community together with other volunteers.

The endowment has already contributed $500 to these organizations and additional donations to these organizations during the next few weeks will be matched by a gift from the endowment up to $1,500 total.
