Third Sunday after Epiphany
January 2013

In reading of Jesus' conflicts with the Pharisees, it is easy to dismiss the Pharisees as legalistic and self-righteous, and to situate ourselves squarely on the side of Jesus. But why were the Pharisees so threatened by Jesus?

Last call on dead batteries

The Chapel's Green Team is about to take all of our used batteries to a recycling place.

This Sunday is our last chance to bring used batteries to the Chapel for recycling. Please collect whatever you have at home and drop it off on Sunday.

Thanks so much!

Candlemas

Come join us for Candlemas this coming Thursday,

January 31st 6:30 pm
at the Chapel.

The Episcopal/Lutheran Campus ministry will be joined by Bishop Marc Andrus.

Evensong and Communion will be followed by a festive reception. Members of the congregation are especially invited!

Families at the Chapel

The parents of young children and Worship Family Liaisons (WOFLs) have met since the meeting with Pastor Ruth, and are following up on many of her recommendations.

Laura Johnson is stepping into the role as parent liaison, and she will be coordinating with the WOFLs (volunteers from the congregation) on all things kid-related!

We will also be trying out a routine for children downstairs, while the adults are listening to the reading, sermon and prayers upstairs. The routine includes a song, a prayer, and an activity. If you'd like to see the details regarding what the kids do downstairs, talk to Laura Johnson, Kathy Gee or Robyn Gee.

If you'd like to get involved and help out with kid activities once a month, come let us know after church!

Social Justice Donations

In the fall, the congregation voted to support

Lutheran Volunteer Corps ($1,000)
Lutheran Peace Fellowship ($500)
East Bay Sanctuary Covenants ($500)

as part of the Annual Social Justice Budget Process.

On 2/3, we will hear more about East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, which provides sanctuary--support, protection and advocacy--to low-income and indigent refugees and immigrants.

On 2/10, we will hear more about Lutheran Volunteers Corp, which is a voluntary service program where volunteers work at social and environmental justice organizations and live in intentional community together with other volunteers.

The endowment has already contributed $500 to these organizations and additional donations to these organizations during the next few weeks will be matched by a gift from the endowment up to $1,500 total.
