Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost
October 2012

This Sunday we hear about David's idea to honor God by building a temple. God's response is not at all what David expected.

Come worship with us and discover that God is a surprising God!

Spanish Bible Study -- Sunday @ 10:00 am

The next Spanish-English bible study is this coming Sunday before liturgy at the Chapel. (10:00 am)

Come discover the bible and practice your Spanish. No need to be perfect or fluent, just come with an open mind and heart.

Pastor Jeff's blog post

History came full circle last Sunday when First United re-entered the ELCA after the church's expulsion in 1996.

Much has changed since Pastor Jeff's controversial ordination in 1990.

Take a look at Pastor Jeff's blog entry reflecting on our history, the affliction and the growing healing and reconciliation of our ELCA community.

God Moves Over?

In the battle over Proposition 37, the statewide ballot initiative that would require California to label genetically engineered foods, GMO typically refers to "genetically modified organisms."

But in some religious circles, GMO stands for "God Moves Over."

The California Council of Churches, which represents 1.5 million members, says it supports the measure because it's concerned about the spread of genetically modified organisms in the food chain and because "it is immoral that consumers be left in the dark about what is in their food."

At the Chapel we agree, and our garden now sports a "Yes on Prop 37" sign!

 Star Struck Red Carpet Gala

Night Ministry provides pastoral care, counseling, referral services and crisis intervention to those who are lonely, anxious, or in distress in the middle of the night.

Come support Night Ministry at their annual fall gala this Saturday,

October 20th.

October Green Challenge

The Green Challenge theme for October is "Community Action".

Visit the Chapel's Green Challenge Checklist to find ideas for how you can be involved locally and globally as a person of faith to help care for the earth.

And don't forget to check off the things you've done so far!

Fair Trade Month

October is also Fair Trade Month. How do you celebrate fair trade? A fair-trade cup of coffee in the morning? A fair-trade chocolate snack for the 2 o'clock blues? A fair-trade cup of tea on a rainy evening?

Click here for 10 ways to celebrate fair-trade in October

And there's reason to celebrate: After years of petitioning, Hershey's - long known for child and slave labor sourcing - finally agreed to start sourcing fair-trade by 2020!

Church IMPACT

Elections are coming up soon and there are measures on the ballot that can seem nebulous and confusing.

Church IMPACT exists for  empowering and mobilizing people of faith to be effective advocates in public policy.

Take a look at their website for great resources for the upcoming election

Sustainability Report

Meeting after church on Sunday, October 21!

Last year at the Chapel's Annual Meeting on January 29, 2012, the congregation appointed a short-term working group to "create a sustainable financial plan for the Chapel."

This Task Force on Financial Sustainability began immediately to study the ministry of the Chapel and to put forth a realistic model for what it costs to do the ministry in which we are currently engaged in a sustainable way.
