Congratulations to the West County Chamber's own Kim Wirt, IOM, who completed her Certificate in Non-Profit Management this week at the US Chamber's Institute for Organization Management. This has been a 4-year endeavor, and we are very proud of her accomplishment. Here she is receiving her diploma (sorry for the blur - all I had was my camera phone):
Please contact her directly to offer your congratulations by contacting her at [email protected]. She is off today recovering from her week (hence the late email today), but will be back in on Monday.
We have three more weeks of revisions to the Odenton Master Plan before we present our recommendations, and they are a key component to the success of the long-awaited Odenton Town Center (see West County Chamber in Action below). I just wanted to take this opportunity to apologize if I don't get back to you right away - this is a major, time-limited effort that is taking time away from some of the ordinary business of the Chamber. Please be patient, and if you need something urgently be sure to contact Kim or Marnea - they'll either help you or flag it to my attention. Thanks!
Last but not least, we are pleased to announce the election of Melanie Graw of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage - Crofton to the West County Chamber's Board of Directors. Melanie has been a member of the West County Chamber since 2007 as a real estate agent, and is now managing the Crofton office. Welcome, Melanie!

West County Chamber in ActionListening Session with Senator Ed DeGrange
We were pleased to host State Senator Ed DeGrange (Dist. 32) for a business community listening session regarding the impact of state regulations on small business. Sen. DeGrange has been named to the State Advisory Council on this topic, and wants to make sure he's heard YOUR concerns. If you weren't able to attend Wednesday's meeting, we hope you will take a few moments to share your concerns with him by email - he can be reached at [email protected].
Odenton Town Center Master Plan
We are frequently asked why it's taken so long to develop the Odenton Town Center. One of the biggest holdups is conflicts written into the Odenton Town Center Master Plan that result in every project requiring modifications to get through the approval process. Though they are usually granted, they result in numerous delays and many hours spent creating a paper trail for the Office of Planning and Zoning. Not a good use of time, and expensive when you're paying engineers by the hour!
The West County Chamber is leading a team of developers, engineers, and other interested parties in developing a list of recommended revisions to the recently released Master Plan. Think this doesn't affect your business? Think again: as currently written, the Master Plan would require EVERY business in Odenton to comply with regulations regarding signage, landscaping, outdoor structures, and fences even if they were previously grandfathered. What's more, if you need to renovate an existing building, even upgrading as little as 20% of the building or site would trigger a level of compliance with the Master Plan. And in the newly designated Historic District, virtually all buildings, regardless of vintage, would be required to comply with historic preservation guidelines (apparently someone got confused and thought we were Downtown Annapolis).
We're sure we'll turn up more things during our review - we're less than halfway through - but be assured the Chamber is looking out for your interests. Anyone wishing to join our remaining review sessions is welcome - they will be held in the Chamber conference room on the dates listed in the article below. Just let Kim know you're coming!
If you want to share your own thoughts regarding the Master Plan, you can send your comments to
[email protected]
or attend the business community hearing on Wednesday, August 5th at 6 p.m. (Location TBD - it was planned to be in Annapolis, but they will be moving it to Odenton. Watch this space!)

Odenton Town Center Master Plan Review Task Force
The 2015 Draft of the Odenton Town Center Master Plan was released on Thursday. Those wishing to review it can download the document at Odenton Master Plan. Comments must be submitted by August 24th, preferably by email. The Chamber's Master Plan Review Task Force has set four dates to review the Odenton Town Master Plan. Input is welcome. All meetings will be held in the Chamber Conference room. August 5 - 8:30 AM - 11 AM Chapter 5 An extra session has been scheduled for August 12 - 10 AM- 12:30 PM The Task Force is reviewing from a development perspective. If there is interest from the local business community in specifically discussing the impact on businesses in the area (signage, renovations, landscaping, etc.), we'd be happy to convene a separate meeting just to address that. We also encourage you to attend the hearing on August 5th (information above). RSVP to Kim ( [email protected]) if you are interested in helping.

Businesses Invited to Share Thoughts on Master Plan
Office of Planning & Zoning Schedules Meeting
Is your business in the Odenton Town Center? If so, you're affected by the provisions of the 180 page Odenton Town Center Master Plan. Many business owners don't realize they're in the Town Center - it spreads all the way from Reece Road to Sappington Circle, up to MD32, and out to Odenton Road.
The new version of the Master Plan was released at the end of June, and comments are being accepted online until August 24th. But you can also be heard at the Office of Planning & Zoning's public hearing - the one for the business community is on August 5th at 6 p.m. at the Chesapeake Innovation Center (note change of location), 2288 Bluewater Boulevard, Odenton, MD. (We did not receive an updated flier, so the one below has the previous location.)
You can download your copy of the Master Plan at Odenton Master Plan, or purchase a copy for $23 at the Office of Planning & Zoning, 2664 Riva Road, Annapolis. Copies are also available for review at the Odenton Regional Library and the West County Chamber of Commerce.
