Saint Arnold Army Newsletter
Dear Saint Arnold's Army:

Let's flashback to 1994. Houston, Texas.

There was good: The Rockets won their first of back-to-back championships. Jeff Bagwell was the MVP of the National League.

There was not so good: The Oilers. The beer aisle at your local grocery store.

When we first opened our doors on June 9, 1994, the term "craft beer" didn't exist. Local beer in Houston wasn't a thing. Up until that point, Houston was the largest city in the country without a microbrewery.

Today, the beer aisles in Houston look a lot different. You can find a wealth of great beers from around town, around Texas, and the rest of the country. It's a beautiful sight.

When we celebrate our anniversary each year, we are celebrating the growth of a community in Houston. We are celebrating the evolution of the local beer scene, and we're raising a glass to the ones who keep it going: you. Next weekend, we invite you to enjoy our 22nd Anniversary with us.

Our party at the brewery on Saturday, June 11 features live music from Khris Royal and Wild Moccasins, beer, food trucks, a commemorative glass, live t-shirt printing and the World Elevated Beer Pouring Championship. Learn more and get your Saturday tickets here.

On Sunday, June 12, our Special Rare Cellar Tasting lets you sample a wide range of special release beers and one-of-a-kind selections. Your ticket also includes a cheese tasting from the Houston Dairymaids and a souvenir tasting glass. See the full list of beers and get Sunday tickets here.

Our Upcoming Icon Gold - Texas Honey Saison

Bees love the spring. The warmth brings a carpet of Texas wildflowers from which the bees gather nectar. They return to the hive, and the nectar magically turns into honey.

We have taken this honey and turned it into beer. The pastoral origins of the honey seemed appropriate for a Farmhouse ale like a Saison. The tradition of brewing these beers in Northern France and Belgium is much more freeform, given to using whatever local ingredients might appeal to the brewer. This tradition contrasts sharply with the rigid rules by which German brewers have toiled.

At the very core, this beer modestly consists of three malts (Pilsner, Wheat and CaraPils) and three hops (Perle, Lemon Drop, and Motueka). The simplicity of the base malts created a canvas for us to accentuate the rich flavors produced by the French Saison yeast alongside the earthy and citrusy notes provided by the hops.

In the spirit of farmhouse brewing, where farmers/brewers were mostly limited to using ingredients on hand, we wanted to add something that would truly express a flavor unique to Texas. We got in touch with our friends at Burleson's Honey in Waxahachie and, after test brewing with several different types, settled on their pure Texas Wildflower Honey. To each batch, we added over 800 pounds of this honey, which evokes aromas of floral blooms and nectarines in the final beer.

Also in the spirit of farmhouse brewing, we experimented with nearly extreme fermentation temperatures. This left us with a finished beer that is bone dry and incredibly thirst quenching.

Icon Gold - Texas Honey Saison will begin replacing Icon Green next week. It can be found in six packs of 12 oz bottles as well as on tap around town. Wonderfully refreshing for the summer!
