Saint Arnold Army Newsletter

Dear Saint Arnold's Army:

Bishop's Barrel No. 8 Coming Monday

In 2007, we released Divine Reserve No. 5, an imperial stout that became a favorite nationally even though you could only get it here in Texas. And only for an hour or two at that. It is just a memory (other than the 100 or so bottles in our cellar and probably a few some of you may have somehow squirreled away). Until now.

We rebrewed the DR5 recipe in late 2013 and this time decided to barrel age it for a year, putting it into Woodford Reserve barrels. Now we have bottled it and starting this Monday, January 12, it will start showing up at a few bars and restaurants as Bishop's Barrel No. 8.

How could this get better?

We brewed another batch three months ago to be released as Divine Reserve No. 15 on Monday, January 26. DR15 will be available (briefly) at a limited number of grocery and liquor stores as well as bars and restaurants.

The fun part about this (actually, there are many fun parts) is that some bars will probably hold onto some of their BB8 so you can try BB8 next to DR15 to see the effect barrel aging has on a beer.

What does BB8 taste like? A bittersweet dark chocolate liqueur. But beer. For complete tasting notes and other specs on the beer, see our Bishop's Barrel page.

Again, with all Bishop's Barrel releases, bottles are available only at bars and restaurants. Keep up with the hashtag #BB8 on Twitter to find it in your area. Here are a few places already planning BB8 releases:

Monday, January 12
  • Pimlico Irish Pub
  • Union Tavern, Clear Lake - 5:00 PM
  • Hop Scholar Ale House, The Woodlands - 6:30 PM

Thursday, January 15

  • Guru Burgers & Crepes, Sugar Land - 6:00 PM

Saturday, January 17

Congratulations to Astros legend Craig Biggio on his election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. You've earned yourself a beer, sir!

Super Beef Sunday at Saint Arnold
Sunday, February 1 - 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

We will be having our second annual BBQ event that happens to fall on the Sunday that also happens to host the championship game for the professional American football league (it has a catchy name, but we can't remember it for copyright reasons). This year, we will have the folks from Corkscrew BBQ along with Wayne and company of Louie Mueller BBQ at the brewery serving their finest BBQ to fill your belly before you go to your game-watching party. Of course there will also be delicious Saint Arnold beer, which you'll be able to enjoy from the commemorative Super Beef Sunday pint glass you'll receive.

Just like last year, Wayne will have pre-wrapped whole brisket and beef ribs available for pre-purchase (at the time of your ticket purchase). These beauties come with heating instructions so you can tell your friends you cooked it all on your own. Wayne's whole brisket will be $100 and his beef rib will be $75.

Please note, while the event runs from 11:00 - 2:00, and we will have plenty of BBQ for that time, please make sure to arrive by 12:30, so that you can try all of the different items the pitmasters will have to offer.

Tickets are $50 per person and include tastings from both pitmasters, beer and a commemorative pint glass. Briskets and beef ribs to take home must be ordered at the time of your ticket purchase. They will not be available to purchase at the event.

Get your Super Beef Sunday tickets here.

Pub Night at Saint Arnold
Friday, January 9 - 5:00 - 10:00 PM

Get your year started off right this Friday at our monthly Pub Night. As always, we'll have special rare beers on tap and delicious food available from our kitchen.

We will be tapping a keg of our Bière de Saison - a previous Icon release - that was aged in the same barrels we used for Bishop's Barrel No. 2 Brett. We've only tapped this special release once before, at our 20th Anniversary Rare Cellar Tasting, and it was quite delicious indeed.

Also available will be a cask conditioned version of our current Icon, Sorachi Ace Dubbel, and bottles of Bishop's Barrel No. 3, a Russian Imperial Stout aged in Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels.

On the food side, we'll be serving our Bishop's Burger, brats, chicken tenders, chicken quesadillas, short rib tacos and more. If you haven't tried any of the awesome food from our kitchen yet, Pub Night is a great time to enjoy it.

On Pub Nights, we open our tour hall from 5:00 - 10:00 strictly as a bar and let you choose what you want to purchase. There's no entry fee for the evening, so you can just choose beers by the individual glass or bottle. Pub Nights are strictly 21 and up.

6th Annual Bowie Elvis Festival at Continental Club and Shoeshine Charley's Big Top Lounge
Saturday, January 10 - 6:00 PM - 1:00 AM

We're teaming up with the folks at Splice Records to celebrate the shared birthdays of David Bowie and Elvis. There will be two stages with eight bands, a costume fashion contest, themed games and $1 off Saint Arnold beers throughout the event.

Tickets are just $15 per person. You can purchase yours in advance at Sig's Lagoon or at the door on Saturday. See the music lineup and more on the event's Facebook page.

Valentines for Veterans at Saint Arnold
Monday, January 19 - 6:00 - 9:00 PM

We've been teaming up with Valentines for Veterans for a few years now to host an evening of beer and crafts at the brewery for a great cause. The event raises funds for two incredible organizations: Team Red, White, & Blue and Expedition Balance. Both of these groups provide support and community for Houston-area veterans as they make the difficult transition to civilian life.

Here's how the evening works:
  • $10 gets you entry into the brewery. $5 from each ticket will go directly to our partner organizations. Taps are open for the evening.
  • Craft tables will be set up so that you can get creative and make Valentines to honor our veterans.
  • Browse the bake sale featuring sweet and savory items from some of Houston's best pastry chefs and home bakers. Enjoy with your beer or take home for later! All proceeds will be donated. There will also be a raffle featuring great food-related prizes and experiences.
  • Two of Houston's best food trucks, Blood Brothers BBQ and Taco Nuts, will be outside in the parking lot ready to feed you! They are generously donating 5% of their proceeds as well.

Learn more about Valentines for Veterans here.
