Saint Arnold Army Newsletter

Dear Saint Arnold's Army:

Our Brew Crew is back from the Craft Brewers Conference in Denver, and they didn't return empty handed. They brought home a Silver World Beer Cup Medal for Santo! This is Santo's second medal in the American-Style Dark Lager category - it also won a Bronze in 2012.

To celebrate, we've decided to release Santo in 12 packs. (We actually decided this a while back, but the timing sure is convenient now.) That means you can get twice the medal winning Santo in one handsome box. If you don't see it already at your favorite place to get Saint Arnold 12 packs, it'll be showing up soon.

Divine Reserve No. 14 Available Starting Monday, April 28

Strong Belgian Golden Ales can be quite tasty, but we wanted to make one with a little more complexity and depth and wanted to do so without digging into the spice cabinet to achieve this. Ultimately, the key to the recipe is the addition of rye and finding the right yeast. Oh, and 10% ABV. Here are brewer Casey Motes' thoughts on this recipe:

"The goal of this beer was to make a Belgian/American hybrid using West Coast American hops and rye to emulate the fruit and spices often found in Belgian beers.

The beer pours a bright golden color. The nose is a mixture of phenolics from the Belgian wit yeast and light citrus from the American hops with a touch of graininess. Rye adds sweetness and complexity to the pilsner and aromatic malts. The spice of the rye is somewhat subdued at lower temperatures but becomes more apparent as the beer warms. Cascade and centennial hops were used for both flavor and aroma, adding floral and citrus notes to play off the strengths of the yeast.

Belgian candi sugar was added during fermentation to bump up the alcohol while allowing the beer to avoid finishing too sweet. The dry finish hides the 10% alcohol nicely and makes you want to take another sip."

This release is ready to enjoy today. How will it age? Ask us in five years.

Note on Boiler Room Berliner Weisse

You won't like this beer. It's tart and sour with a slightly funky note. That's cool. We didn't brew it for you. We brewed it for ourselves.

This is our official line since we have found that people who love this beer really love it, but we have gotten several notes from people politely letting us know that they weren't expecting this beer (or any beer) to taste like Boiler Room does. A couple of notes were less polite. That's fine. This is an unusual style, very difficult to brew, and something that we really love to drink. So be it known that most of you won't like this beer. We just made it for ourselves.

Rockin' Rollin' Prints at the Brewery
Sunday, April 27 - 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

One of our most interesting events every year is PrintHouston's Rockin' Rollin' Prints, where over 75 artists' woodblocks will be printed under the drum of a two-ton steamroller in our parking lot. In our opinion, this is the best possible use of a two-ton steamroller. The theme of this year's art is Balance. After the prints are pressed, they'll be hung in the tour hall for viewing.

Burning Bones Press will also be on hand with their "Came From the Bayou III" printmaking demos and more. PrintHouston and Burning Bones will both have commemorative glasses for sale at a price of $10, which will include a pint of beer. Alternatively, you'll have the option to purchase beer. This year, the event will be free and open to the public all day - no tickets are necessary for entry.

Pub Night in the Tour Hall This Friday, April 18
with Special Guest Burning Bones Press

Pub Night returns to the tour hall this Friday, and we've got something cool for you. We'll be rolling out our brand new t-shirt press, and you'll be able to purchase a Santo shirt hand pressed by the artist who designed the Santo label, Carlos Hernandez of Burning Bones Press. He'll be here with Pat Masterson, also of Burning Bones, and they'll be pressing custom Santo t-shirts by inking up a hand carved woodblock and pressing the design on the shirt. It's a really cool process. Think of it like the steamroller event - just a bit smaller and without the steamroller.

As always, we'll be pulling out some special beers. Bishop's Barrel No. 5 (our Bourbon Barrel Wee Heavy Scotch Ale), Divine Reserve No. 11 (the beer that became Endeavour) and Pumpkinator 2013 will all be available. We'll also be tapping a special cask of Icon Blue - Brown Porter with toasted coconut and vanilla. It's delicious. Some food will be available as well, so you'll be able to enjoy our Jerk Chicken Sandwich, a Bishop's Burger, Pulled Pork Nachos or a few other items.

If you've yet to attend a Pub Night, here's the scoop. On Pub Nights, we open our tour hall from 5:00 - 10:00 PM strictly as a bar and let you choose what you want to purchase. There's no entry fee for the evening, so you can just choose beers by the individual glass or bottle. Pub Nights are strictly 21 and up.

Lunch Reservations for Good Friday

For $17.55 plus tax ($19 total), you'll get the two course lunch and beer. We will be taking reservations online via this link. We expect this day (and other holidays) to fill up fast, so please make your reservations quickly to ensure your spot.
