With Gratitude!
| We are delighted to announce that there are two new classrooms at Colina, owing to the generosity of a local firm. With ever increasing class sizes, we needed larger rooms for biology, physics and chemistry classes and a safe environment for science experiments. Jason Stewart of our building committee developed a remodel plan, creating one large classroom on each side of the hallway in the physicians' wing. Another parent in our community, Jamie Awford, presented this plan to his construction firm as a pro-bono opportunity. It is our great good fortune that BNBuilders accepted this project and executed the plan at no cost to our school. Under Jamie's supervision, BNB rallied a small army of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, drywall, flooring and painting contractors who went to work on July 7 and completed an estimated $75,000 remodel on August 1. How do we even begin to say "Thank You?" Please help us try if you happen to see Jason or Jamie on campus! In addition we were fortunate to have Kathleen Fox, Board Treasurer, who acted as our "owner's rep" for the project and she was on site daily, and sometimes twice a day, to ensure the operations went smoothly....Thank you to all involved, and our students are already excited a week into school.

Before.....
| During this remodel, all professional precautions were taken and only construction professionals were engaged. Because Colina construction dates back to the 1970's, we commissioned a thorough assessment with regard to asbestos before finalizing the purchase last year. The subsequent report identified two areas where asbestos is present but encapsulated. In this encapsulated state, it is benign. Should any future remodeling impact those areas, we will have the material professionally removed. This summer's remodel project did not involve those areas. Nevertheless, out of an abundance of caution, we did further testing during the demo phase. All reports came back clean. The full report is available in the school office for review.

After.....
A photo from 11th grade Atomic Chemistry seminar. They are loving the new science classrooms! On the third day of class a student was demonstrating the features of obsidian, which is solidified lava. It has been used to make arrowheads and continues to be the sharpest material in the world. This exercise was followed by a view of the flakes under the new microscopes from the recent McCarthy grant!
|
And more good news: a $10,000 grant from The McCarthy Family Foundation funded the purchase of chemical resistant lab tables, microscopes and other equipment to complete the furnishings in our newly remodeled rooms.
The Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery vacated their offices at Colina in July, and in August we welcomed a new tenant: Dana Dean Developmental Optometry. Ms. Dean occupies three offices off the main rotunda which enjoy a separate entrance to the facility. No longer encumbered by the Nizhoni lease which we inherited with the purchase, the rotunda is now available for our school's exclusive use.
We are also working with the Department of Environmental Health to bring the Colina kitchen up to commercial standards. With a separate entrance, separate office quarters and restroom space, the Colina kitchen offers us a good opportunity for rental income.
The Osteopathic Center for Children is expected to continue in residence at Colina through November 2014.
And one last update: Our work with the architectural team from Roesling Nakamura Terada continues, and there has been significant progress on master planning work for our redesigned lower school campus and remodeled high school campus. We look forward to bringing these potential designs to you soon and hope to complete this work by November 2014.

WOW Day!! WSSD Is In!
From Berlin, Germany, Europe, World - August 2014.....Dear students all around the world, In 2013 you again showed tremendous commitment and your ideas and activities have raised € 390,850.86! More than 230 Waldorf schools from 35 countries participated in last year's WOW-Day. This has enabled the Friends of Waldorf Education to support 60 educational institutions in 27 countries. We would like to thank you wholeheartedly on behalf of all children and young people!
And there is more to celebrate: This year marks the 20th anniversary of the WOW-Day campaign! Since its creation in 1994, Waldorf students from many countries do a great deal to enable children around the world to benefit from Waldorf education. In fact, you are showing that you care about our world situation and as you can see: your dedication pays off, for your participation in the WOW-Day campaign is an essential support for Waldorf Education worldwide! The WOW-Day campaign supports Waldorf initiatives, which face a difficult financial situation. With no government subsidies WOW-Day funds enable many facilities to admit children from particularly difficult backgrounds and give them access to Waldorf education: A unique opportunity for many children. In these 20 years, 400 Waldorf schools from 35 countries have collected nearly € 3 million that benefited over 110 Waldorf initiatives in more than 40 countries. Last year, for the first time schools from Japan, Peru, Lithuania and Australia joined the WOW-Day campaign, so that it reached now all continents!
The Friends of Waldorf Education would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the students, teachers and parents at Waldorf schools worldwide for their incredible commitment to helping children and young people around the world. In line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, this is a contribution to the realization of children's rights, as it furthers the implementation of a wholistic education, to which all children are entitled to. As a matter of fact you, as children and adolescents yourselves, have made a strong statement to support those rights!
With kind regards from Berlin, Olivia Girard

The Virtue of the Month as given by Rudolf Steiner
|
Courtesy becomes Tactfulness of Heart
The antonyms are Inconsiderate and Careless.
The Virtues Contemplation by Herbert Witzenmann is based on indications by Rudolf Steiner for meditations which may be practiced in accordance with the changing year. It directs us toward a path of inner work upon ourselves, whereby, in that we develop our potential qualities, and let them blend into one another, we become creators of our Virtues, architects of our own being.
