Building Committee News
| The Building Committee would like to update you on our work since the acquisition of the Colina Campus. With much gratitude, we note that our school has crossed two major thresholds: Our permit at the lower school was securely vested in February 2012, and a permanent home for our high school was secured at the end of 2013. Our Building Committee therefore regrouped in mid-January to turn to the work that comes next: Master Planning our two campuses.
Many of you will remember that the master plan initially developed for our Altadena Campus, known as the "unified campus" plan, included construction of the high school at Altadena. This is the master plan that is still on file with the City of San Diego. The acquisition of the Colina Campus renders the unified campus plan irrelevant to our current status and our future needs, since the Altadena Campus will now be wholly dedicated to the education of our early childhood and grades children. A new master plan for the campus must be designed, and an amendment filed with the City before any development work can begin at Altadena.
At the same time, our "new" Colina facility needs infrastructure upgrades and some re-design work to meet the high school needs. Some limited space at Colina will be isolated for one or two compatible tenants to help defray some of these costs. But before undertaking any re-design or upgrade work at Colina, we need to have a long-range, well-considered master plan in place. Since work at Colina will be undertaken only as can be prudently managed, it will likely proceed in small stages. We need to ensure that all work that is done, even in the short-term, will be compatible with the long-range goals for the facility. So here, too, a master plan is needed before any serious work can begin.
The Building Committee launched a search for an architectural firm to oversee this work. Throughout February, we met with design principals and toured both campuses with every potential firm; a detailed Request for Proposal was drafted and issued on March 10th; proposal submissions and resumes were reviewed and interviews were scheduled; our group sat through presentations, checked references, and cultivated contacts that some of our parents have in the profession for some "insider" insights and references. When this work was complete, all eight individuals involved in this process met on April 3 and consensus promptly emerged to recommend the firm of Roesling Nakamura Terada ("RNT") to our board. RNT presented to our full board at the April 10 meeting, and was subsequently unanimously approved for hire. On April 17 , the Building Committee met with the four-architect RNT team in their downtown offices to initiate the project. We are delighted to tell you that the design leader on our team is the firm's founding partner and a highly regarded teacher in the profession, and the second design architect is a former Waldorf student. All four of our architects are highly credentialed with many years of school construction experience, in both new and re-purposed projects.
On May 1st, our architectural team met with faculty, staff and board to kick-off the project. During the following weeks, our five "user groups" met with the RNT team to discuss their vision for each campus and their specialized teaching needs: Our high school faculty, the specialty subject faculty, grades faculty, early childhood faculty and our administrative group. In mid-June, another round of meetings will take place to review and critique the first iterations of our architects. This process will continue throughout the summer, as RNT fleshes out the design work with pertinent site and code assessments, and continues to meet and work with the Building Committee. Another round of design review meetings will take place in the Fall, at which time we hope to lay sketches layered with detail before our full community and solicit your input. We are grateful to many, and must particularly mention parents Fernanda Vuilleumier and Joe Felix for their help. All of us are inspired by our community's commitment and contributions. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Kathleen Fox on behalf of the Building Committee:

The Virtue of the Month as given by Rudolf Steiner
|
May 21 - June 20
Endurance becomes Faithfulness
Antonyms are Loss of Grip and Giving Up
The Virtues Contemplation by Herbert Witzenmann is based on indications by Rudolf Steiner for meditations which may be practiced in accordance with the changing year. It directs us toward a path of inner work upon ourselves, whereby, in that we develop our potential qualities, and let them blend into one another, we become creators of our Virtues, architects of our own being.

We are returning to Swaziland again this summer.
The children and their caregivers so appreciated the generous donations from our community last year! This year we will be bringing donations, planting gardens, working at a mobile medical clinic, making musical instruments, and playing with lots of children at orphanages and care points.
- Swaziland is a beautiful, peaceful country, the last remaining absolute monarchy in Africa.
- The population is less than one million people.
- 1/3 of these are orphaned or vulnerable children.
- Swaziland has the highest rate of HIV/AIDS in the world.
- The problem is so big the country is moving towards extinction.
- The country is so small, a solution is possible!
Our focus this year is to raise money for school fees. Education is one of the key components to help the Swazi people to combat the cycle of poverty and disease, but school costs $100-$400/year -- an amount that may not seem like much, but is enough to make an education out of reach for many children.
You can make donations directly to us, or to make tax-deductible scholarship donations, go to www.artistsforcommunity.org/Donate.html
-click on donation categories, scroll down to click on SOS/Swazi
-note that it is for school scholarships
We are also collecting donations of new or gently worn clothing for infants to 5-year-olds, and small, sturdy toys. There will be a box outside Periwinkle kindergarten for your donations.
For more information, contact us at greenwillow1@cox.net, and go to nnlfilm.com
